It’s the story of an attractive widow, Abby Christianson, who wants to start living a new and better life, a life that doesn’t involve any serious relationships with men. Abby has had some unfortunate experiences with men in her past, experiences that she has never shared and never plans to share, not even with her best friends. She is ready to leave her past behind her. First, she sells her large home and then purchases a luxury oceanfront apartment in a retirement complex. There she makes many interesting and unique friends who end up playing important roles in her new life. This number includes a man, Bob Goldman, who decides immediately that he wants to know Abby better; however, Abby finds his interest and attention a bit unsettling. Even more unsettling, are the letters and messages that she begins receiving from an unknown writer, who threatens to take her life and she doesn’t know why. The story doesn’t end where you think or how you think but it will hold your attention to the last page, leaving you wanting more.

Book Synopsis Dickens, His Parables, and His Reader by : Linda M. Lewis
Download or read book Dickens, His Parables, and His Reader written by Linda M. Lewis and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Dickens once commented that in each of his Christmas stories there is “an express text preached on . . . always taken from the lips of Christ.” This preaching, Linda M. Lewis contends, does not end with his Christmas stories but extends throughout the body of his work. In Dickens, His Parables, and His Reader, Lewis examines parable and allegory in nine of Dickens’s novels as an entry into understanding the complexities of the relationship between Dickens and his reader. Through the combination of rhetorical analysis of religious allegory and cohesive study of various New Testament parables upon which Dickens based the themes of his novels, Lewis provides new interpretations of the allegory in his novels while illuminating Dickens’s religious beliefs. Specifically, she alleges that Dickens saw himself as valued friend and moral teacher to lead his “dear reader” to religious truth. Dickens’s personal gospel was that behavior is far more important than strict allegiance to any set of beliefs, and it is upon this foundation that we see allegory activated in Dickens’s characters. Oliver Twist and The Old Curiosity Shop exemplify the Victorian “cult of childhood” and blend two allegorical texts: Jesus’s Good Samaritan parable and John Bunyan’s ThePilgrim’s Progress. In Dombey and Son,Dickens chooses Jesus’s parable of the Wise and Foolish Builders. In the autobiographical David Copperfield, Dickens engages his reader through an Old Testament myth and a New Testament parable: the expulsion from Eden and the Prodigal Son, respectively. Led by his belief in and desire to preach his social gospel and broad church Christianity, Dickens had no hesitation in manipulating biblical stories and sermons to suit his purposes. Bleak House is Dickens’s apocalyptic parable about the Day of Judgment, while Little Dorrit echoes the line “Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors” from the Lord’s Prayer, illustrating through his characters that only through grace can all debt be erased. The allegory of the martyred savior is considered in Hard Times and A Tale of Two Cities. Dickens’s final completed novel, Our Mutual Friend, blends the parable of the Good and Faithful Servant with several versions of the Heir Claimant parable. While some recent scholarship debunks the sincerity of Dickens’s religious belief, Lewis clearly demonstrates that Dickens’s novels challenge the reader to investigate and develop an understanding of New Testament doctrine. Dickens saw his relationship with his reader as a crucial part of his storytelling, and through his use and manipulation of allegory and parables, he hoped to influence the faith and morality of that reader.

Book excerpt: The husband-and-wife treasure-hunting team of Sam and Remi Fargo return in a new adventure as they search for an ancient scroll--which carries a deadly curse--in this thrilling addition to Clive Cussler's bestselling series. In 533 A.D., the last Vandal ruler in North Africa consults an oracle on how to defeat the invading Byzantine army. The oracle tells the king that a high priestess cast a curse upon the Vandal Kingdom after a sacred scroll was stolen. In order to lift the curse, the scroll must be returned to its rightful home. But the kingdom falls before the scroll is found, leaving its location a great mystery...until a current day archeological dig, funded by Sam and Remi Fargo, uncovers some vital clues. The search for the ancient scroll is put on hold when the Fargos learn that a shipment of supplies intended for their charitable foundation's school has been stolen, and they travel to Nigeria to deliver new supplies themselves. But their mission becomes infinitely more complicated when they run afoul of a band of robbers. The group takes Remi and several students hostage, and there are signs that the kidnapping is related to the missing scroll. The Fargos need all their skills to save the lives of the young girls at the school before they uncover the hidden treasure...and lift the deadly curse.

Book Synopsis Fulfilling Our Mission by : Reinhard Bonnke
Download or read book Fulfilling Our Mission written by Reinhard Bonnke and published by Whitaker House. This book was released on 2022-11-29 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fulfilling Our Mission, by noted international evangelist Reinhard Bonnke, explores truths, stories, and principles from the Bible that show how to effectively reach out to others with the love of God and the salvation of Jesus Christ. Tens of millions of people came to know Christ through Bonnke’s ministry. He explains that there is no “right” approach in evangelism, only right principles. Bonnke illustrates these principles from the New Testament in a way that gives direction for action and inspiration to act: • God deeply loves all people. • He wants each of us to participate in reaching the world. • God equips the least likely individuals for His providential purposes. • Where the Holy Spirit provides the tiniest spark, a start can be made. • Evangelism is not an intellectual pursuit. It is a hands-on activity, a demand, a challenge, a commission, and a consuming passion! From biblical times to today, believers have claimed God’s promises and moved forward in faith. God’s Word is our authority for action and the secret to success in outreach that reveals Jesus to men, women, and children, and brings them into God’s eternal kingdom. Today, Jesus calls us to go into all the world and make disciples, demonstrating God’s great compassion. God not only accompanies those who are go-getters, but He also makes and equips them. With the Word as our guide, let us fulfill the commission Jesus gave us to reach everyone in the world with the message of His salvation!
