Book excerpt: Francis Asbury (1745-1816) was born in England and brought Methodism to North America during forty-five years of ministry. Methodists grew in number from six hundred when Asbury started to over two hundred thousand people in the movement by the time of his death. As he worked with total dedication to reform the nation and spread scriptural, personal, and social holiness throughout the land, he preached, petitioned to abolish slavery, and promoted Sunday schools to teach children reading and mathematics. As a key founder of the American Methodist movement, Asbury observed that it took only a few years for division to emerge among the most passionate and zealous followers of the Wesleyan way. So he repurposed and abridged two earlier works to create The Causes, Evils and Cures of Heart and Church Divisions. This book was recommended for study to early Methodists as a spiritual cure for the human tendency to love self and ideas more than we love others: our colleagues, our neighbors, and our enemies. The study questions found throughout this book are suitable for cultivating spiritual formation within individuals and among a community. As you read about these causes and evils that divide our hearts from each other, nearly every individual will recognize the need for personal improvement in thoughts, words, and deeds.
Book Synopsis The Cure for Common Christianity by : Tommy Galloway
Download or read book The Cure for Common Christianity written by Tommy Galloway and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2007-04 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus stated that with faith in Him we would accomplish greater things than He. Jesus saved the lost, healed the sick, ministered to the multitudes, and raised the dead. Accordingly, the modern church should be doing much more. So what's the problem? Why do we fall short of our Savior's standard? Quite bluntly, Christianity has caught a chronic case of apathy! In The Cure for Common Christianity, using a command of theology and a unique, witty writing style, Pastor Tommy Galloway outlines the formula to alleviate this Church crisis. The problems are complex and the symptoms are multi-faceted; the cure is simple-a full-fledged return to the basics of Christianity. The world is disillusioned by the corruption and complacency plaguing our houses of worship. Christians cannot waste time. A spiritually sick world is waiting for a healthy Church to offer hope. They are waiting for - The Cure for Common Christianity. Pastor Tommy Galloway began his ministry at age sixteen. Upon completion of high school in Calhoun City, Mississippi, he attended Jackson College of Ministries and received a degree in Theology. He served as Youth Pastor in Longview, Texas, before beginning evangelistic work throughout the United States. In 1984, he married Candace Greene. They continued evangelistic work until 1988, when they were elected pastors of Powell's Grove Pentecostal Church in Jayess, Mississippi. After pastoring there for six years, they moved to Tupelo, Mississippi, in 1994, to begin evangelistic work again. In 1996, they founded Word of Life Church where they still serve as Senior Pastors. Pastor Tommy's vision is, "Lead Locally, Reach Regionally, and Grow Globally." Although pastoring the phenomenal people of Word of Life Church is his first calling, he still ministers at evangelistic crusades throughout America and other countries. Tommy and Candi have three children, Landon, Kristian, and Alexis.

Book Synopsis John Owen, Richard Baxter and the Formation of Nonconformity by : Tim Cooper
Download or read book John Owen, Richard Baxter and the Formation of Nonconformity written by Tim Cooper and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-06 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Owen (1616-1683) and Richard Baxter (1615-1691) were both pivotal figures in shaping the nonconformist landscape of Restoration England. Yet despite having much in common, they found themselves taking opposite sides in several important debates, and their relationship was marked by acute strain and mutual dislike. By comparing and contrasting the parallel careers of these two men, this book not only distils the essence of their differing theology, it also offers a broader understanding of the formation of English nonconformity. Placing these two figures in the context of earlier events, experience and differences, it argues that Restoration nonconformity was hampered by their strained personal relationship, which had its roots in their contrasting experiences of the English Civil War. This study thus contributes to historiography that explores the continuities across seventeenth-century England, rather than seeing a divide at 1660. It illustrates the way in which personality and experience shaped the development of wider movements.
