You take one of theirs, they take one of yours and the mess just keeps going.” When two people from the opposite sides of the track come together, is it fate or would you call it just a chance encounter that should’ve been left at just that, an encounter? Philly is known for its infamous gangs, but no gang is as deadly or lethal as the Notorious Hitta’ gang. With the untimely death of NHG leader Sco, LA, next in line is forced into a position that he at one point wanted nothing to do with. LA is a hot head who graduated from the school of hard knocks and bleeds NHG. Now with LA leading the crew, he vows to avenge his brother’s death, but his tunnel vision is thrown off when Mocha Hart comes into his life. Mocha, a promising Pediatric nurse, and a boss chick wants nothing more than to put her heart ache from previous relationships aside to focus on her career. Mocha and LA couldn’t be more different and while Mocha has a M.S. at the end of her name, LA has NHG before his and in his eyes, nothing comes before the gang. A chance encounter connects the two, but Mocha soon learns that she is connected to NHG’s rival gang, The Natural Born Killers, more than she knows. When Mocha’s loyalty is tested, she must decide if it’s worth being a banger’s girl or if fate made a mistake. Ashlyn is just trying to piece her life back together after losing her child’s father and having to ultimately raise her child alone. After licking her wounds and being over men who toy with her heart, Ashlyn sets her sights on an old friend, who runs with NHG. When Ashlyn’s new found relationship ends more quickly than it began, she questions her worth and if she even deserves to be loved. Peaches and Pisces both want things that they cannot have, but they can’t see past their own selfish wants to realize that we seldomly win when playing dirty. The women both long after NHG’s infamous LA but must rethink their thirst trap plans when Mocha comes into the picture. Both envious of Mocha and willing to stop at nothing to get to LA, someone will win, and someone could end up getting burned. In this tale of feuding rivals, love burns, and scandals, what will be more important; protecting the ones you love or claiming king of the streets?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Encounters with Godard takes the reader on a personal voyage into the sensory pleasures and polyphonic rhythms of Jean-Luc Godard's multimedia work since the late 1970s, from his feature films and video essays to his published writings, art books, and media performances. Godard, suggests James S. Williams, lays ethical claim to the cinematic, defined in the broadest terms as relationality and artistic resistance. An introductory chapter on the extended history of La Chinoise (1967), a film explicitly of montage, is followed by seven different types of critical encounters with Godard, encompassing the fields of art and photography, music and literature, and foregrounding themes of gender and sexuality, race and violence, mystery and emotion. The Godard who emerges here is a restless and radical experimenter who establishes new cinematic thresholds through new technology and expands the creative potential and free exchange of the archives. Williams examines works including Nouvelle vague (1990), Film socialisme (2010), Hélas pour moi (1993), and the magnum opus Histoire(s) du cinéma (1988–98). Wide-ranging and accessible, Encounters with Godard marks a major intervention in the study of film aesthetics and ethics while forging a vital dialogue with literature, history and politics, art and art history, music and musicology, philosophy, and aesthetics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers "Weapon Retention and Gun Disarming, Handcuffing, Conducting Suspect Searches, and Defensive Baton" subjects for law enforcement officer. In some close encounters, a suspect may try to grab the officer's sidearm. Loss of the officer's gun could mean the loss of his/her life. The officer or civilians may be killed or injured by offenders who take and use an officer's firearm. Officers must develop a defensive awareness that their weapon can be snatched. Handcuffs are temporary restraining devices designed to control the movements of a subject. However, they do not entirely immobilize a suspect. Its proper use and application is crucial for the safety of the officer, subject, and public. Body searching is a vague topic. It is a careful, systematic examination of the suspect at the scene of a crime, or immediately after apprehension. Failure to conduct a proper search could cost an officer's or civilians' life. Modern law enforcement tool, baton, has been developed to increase officers' ability to protect themselves, particularly in those cases not justifying the use of deadly force. A trained officer who is proficient in the use of the baton is better able to protect himself and is less likely to resort to the use of his firearm. Topics and techniques presented in this book will be of both great interest and great value to trainers and students of law enforcement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers Handcuffing issues for law enforcement officer. The goal is to understand and be able to perform proper techniques of using handcuffs. Handcuffs are temporary restraining devices designed to control the movements of a subject. Officers may routinely use handcuffs to control, restrain and transport persons. Restraining devices will be applied properly and in accordance with training received, so as to minimize the risk of unnecessary injury. The design of handcuffs ensures that the subject's movements are controlled to reduce the risk of injury to the police officer, members of the public, and the subject himself. The most common types of handcuffs used in law enforcement today are the traditional and hinged variety. In addition, officers also use plastic cuffs, in some situations. Handcuffs do not entirely immobilize a suspect. Regardless of the type used, it is imperative that officers be aware that the police style handcuff is a temporary restraining device and that its proper use and application is crucial for the safety of the officer and subject. Topics and techniques presented in this book will be of both great interest and great value to trainers and students of law enforcement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the heart of this anthology lies the world of fashion: a concept that pervades the realm of clothes and dress; appearances and fashionable manners; interior design; ideas and attitudes. Here sixteen papers focus on the Nordic world (Denmark, Norway, Sweden Finland, Iceland, the Faroe Isles and Greenland) within the time frame AD 1500–1850. This was a period of rapid and far-reaching social, political and economic change, from feudal Europe through political revolution, industrialisation, development of international trade, religious upheaval and technological innovation; changes impacting on every aspect of life and reflected in equally rapid and widespread changes in fashion at all levels of society. These papers present a broad image of the theme of fashion as a concept and as an empirical manifestation in the Nordic countries in early modernity, exploring a variety of ways in which that world encountered fashionable impressions in clothing and related aspects of material culture from Europe, the Russian Empire, and far beyond. The chapters range from object-based studies to theory-driven analysis. Elite and sophisticated fashions, the importation of luxuries and fashion garments, christening and bridal wear, silk knitted waistcoats, woollen sweaters and the influence of the whaling trade on women’s clothing are some of the diverse topics considered, as well as religious influences on perceptions of luxury and aspects of the garment trade and merchant inventories.

Howard and Frank Belknap Long, Tierney's poetry has been collected in Dreams and Damnations, The Doom Prophet and One Other, the Arkham House volume of Collected Poems, Nightmares and Visions, The Blob That Gobbled Abdul and Other Poems and Songs and Savage Menace and Other Poems of Horror. S.T. Joshi has described Tierney as "one of the leading weird poets of his generation." The Lemon in the Pool - Simon Kurt Unsworth "In the summer of 2009, I went on holiday with my family - the extended version. As well as my wife and son, Wendy and Ben, there were my parents, my sister and her husband, and my mother-in-law all sharing a villa in Moreira, Spain. "One of the delights of the holiday was having a private pool, and seeing Ben enjoy himself in the water, where over the course of seven days he learned to swim. Perhaps even more fun was seeing his joy when things started to appear in the pool on a daily basis - a tomato, a lemon, two courgettes, three green chillies. "I have no idea where they came from, but I suspect that children in a neighbouring villa were playing a joke on us and Ben loved it. It got to be one of the most exciting things about the holiday, waiting to see what would appear that day. After the appearance of the courgettes, my sister said, 'This'll find its way into one of Simon's stories,' and everyone laughed and someone (I think my mum) said, 'Even he couldn't write a story about this.' "Mum, if it was you that said that, this story is entirely your fault." Losenef Express - Mark Samuels About the story, Mark Samuels explains: "I think most fans of horror will recognise at once the late, great American author upon whom the central character of this tale is based (or, perhaps more accurately, filtered through my imagination). We never met, although I did once catch sight of him across a room at the 1988 World Fantasy Convention in London and, prompted by curiosity, took a hasty, half-obscured photograph. "A number of my friends knew him well, and I regret I myself never had the chance to do so. Sadly, I only discovered his brilliant work years after his untimely death." As Red as Red - Caitlín R. Kiernan "I don't know that 'As Red as Red' had any single source of inspiration," says Kiernan. "It coalesced from numerous experiences and accounts of the supernatural in Rhode Island. Also, I very much wanted to write a non-conventional vampire story which was also (and maybe more so) a werewolf story and a ghost story. "It's also true that I was just coming off having finished The Red Tree, and, in some ways, 'As Red as Red' is an extended footnote to that novel. I was still trying to get The Red Tree out of my system."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Encountering Palestine: Un/making Spaces of Colonial Violence, edited by Mark Griffiths and Mikko Joronen, sits at the intersection of cultural and political geographies and offers innovative reflections on power, colonialism, and anti-colonialism in contemporary Palestine and Israel. Organized around the theme of encountering and focusing on the ways violence and struggle are un/made in the encounter between the colonizer and colonized, the essays focus on power relations as they manifest in cultural practices and everyday lives in anti/colonial Palestine. Covering numerous sites in Gaza, the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Israel, Encountering Palestine addresses a range of empirical topics—from marriage and queer aesthetics to policing, demolition, armament failure, and violence. The contributors utilize diverse theoretical frameworks, such as hyperreality, settler capitalism, intimate biopolitics, and politics of vulnerability, to help us better understand the cultural making and unmaking of colonial and anti-colonial space in Palestine. Encountering Palestine asks us to rethink how colonialism and power operate in Palestine, the ways Palestinians struggle, and the lifeways that constantly encounter, un/make, and counter the spaces of colonial violence.
