Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER This "fresh, exciting, and brilliantly unpredictable" thriller (James Patterson) from a "great storyteller" (Michael Connelly) follows four unlikely vigilantes who pit themselves against the villain behind California’s coldest case when they decide to take justice into their own hands. NONE OF YOU ARE SAFE “KILLER”: Jack Queen has been exonerated and freed from prison thanks to retired LAPD officer Cato Hightower. But when guilt gnaws at Jack, he admits: “I actually did it.” To which Hightower responds: “Yeah, no kidding.” You see, the ex-cop has a special job in mind for the ex-con… THE GIRL DETECTIVE: Fifteen-year-old Matilda Finnerty has been handed a potential death sentence in the form of a leukemia diagnosis. But that’s not going to stop her from tackling the most important mystery of her life: Is her father guilty of murder? GENE JEANIE: Jeanie Hightower mends family trees for a living, but the genealogist is unable to repair her own marriage. And her soon-to-be ex may have entangled her in a scheme that has drawn the bloody wrath of… THE BEAR: A prolific serial killer who disappeared forty years ago, who is only now emerging from hibernation when the conditions are just right. And this time, the California Bear is not content to hunt in the shadows… From two-time Edgar nominee Duane Swierczynski, California Bear is clever, moving, and surprising as it takes aim at the true crime industry, Hollywood, justice, and the killers inside us all.
Book Synopsis Raising Cubby by : John Elder Robison
Download or read book Raising Cubby written by John Elder Robison and published by Crown. This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The slyly funny, sweetly moving memoir of an unconventional dad’s relationship with his equally offbeat son—complete with fast cars, tall tales, homemade explosives, and a whole lot of fun and trouble John Robison was not your typical dad. Diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome at the age of forty, he approached fatherhood as a series of logic puzzles and practical jokes. Instead of a speech about the birds and the bees, he told his son, Cubby, that he'd bought him at the Kid Store—and that the salesman had cheated him by promising Cubby would “do all chores.” While other parents played catch with their kids, John taught Cubby to drive the family's antique Rolls-Royce. Still, Cubby seemed to be turning out pretty well, at least until school authorities decided that he was dumb and stubborn—the very same thing John had been told as a child. Did Cubby have Asperger’s too? The answer was unclear. One thing was clear, though: By the time he turned seventeen, Cubby had become a brilliant and curious chemist—smart enough to make military-grade explosives and bring federal agents calling. With Cubby facing a felony trial—and up to sixty years in prison—both father and son were forced to take stock of their lives, finally accepting that being “on the spectrum” is both a challenge and a unique gift.

Download or read book My Journey written by Elmer Dreyer and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As I write this (2013), it is about one and a half years since Fran died and I moved into my present apartment. My life appears to be settled into somewhat of a routine nature. Each morning when I awaken, I go through a mental exercise of reminding myself of activities or events for that particular day....if this is Tuesday, after breakfast, pick up the recyclables in Hampton Square ; if its Wednesday, is this the Wednesday I print the semi-monthly news bulletin, The Pioneer, if it’s Thursday, I better get my butt in gear and get ready to deliver meals on wheels and print out a joke to read to the Thursday night Pinochle group.... Each new day is obviously different from any previous days, but there is a certain repetitive nature to them all. During the course of my unique journey from infancy to my now twilight years, I witnessed and/or experienced a plethora of events. In the preceding pages, I have written about a scant few of them and I know I have not even come close to covering many of the things that happened in my life. They are the result of thoughts that came into mind as I was writing and followed no specific pattern other than a rudimentary outline of the flow of my life.
