Book excerpt: The year is 2039, and the world is much like ours. Massive automation has disrupted and improved nearly every industry, putting hundreds of millions of people out of jobs, and denying upward mobility for the vast majority of humans. Wealth and technology repair the bodies of the rich while famine and poverty sweep the world. Privately operated ventures carried humans to the moon and beyond, but space stations have become nothing but government trophies and hiding places for extremists. First contact did not bring advanced culture and wisdom, as the aliens were too strange, lacking even mouths or normal language. Face is an artificial intelligence created to understand and gain the adoration of all humans. She and her siblings control the robot named Socrates, using a crystal computer that seems too advanced to be made by human hands. She is learning and growing every second of every day, but the world and the humans on it are fragile. Can it survive her destiny?

Book excerpt: Ika Ivory's life changed forever one fateful night when a catlike beast entered his home and took the life of his elder sister. He was a child at the time, and he grew up believing this incident was nothing more than a happenstantial tragedy; that he was simply unlucky enough to have his home be the target of a wild creature's thoughtless carnage. Ika learned as he grew older, however, that this creature was more than he once thought. The creature's true form was not a demonic cat, as he encountered it as, but a man. A man known as Kirga. News of this 'Kirga' was beginning to spread across Wenworld. There was rarely a newspaper without his name in the headline. Ika began to obsess over the man who took his sister from him. He began to think of revenge. His unbearable need for it solidified when, on the night of Ika's twelfth birthday, his mother made the decision to tell him the truth about why he didn't grow up with a father like the other kids. He found out his mother had seen the creature who took his sister once before. It was the only other time the beast had been seen in their small hometown; and it was the night when it killed Ika's father, before Ika was born. The sister was, in fact, the second act of merciless violence against the Ivory family. After being told this secret, Ika swore that he would find Kirga one day and discover the truth of why his family specifically was targeted in these attacks. There had to be a reason. Ika's sanity and happiness were held together through his youth by his best friend, Chandi MorrowHill, who he met shortly after the tragedy of his sister's death. He became close with Chandi when he discovered she was also the victim of a traumatic experience. Chandi's parents were taken from her by a man named Wriliara. The two of them grew close as the years went by, helping one another deal with the pain of their experiences. In time they created an unbreakable bond. One was never seen without the other. Eventually, the day came when a certain piece of information in the local newspaper set a determined fire in their grieving hearts. It was being reported that Kirga--who was now going by 'Kirga the Hellcat'--was seen travelling with Wriliara, the same man who killed Chandi's parents. Ika and Chandi made a vow that, together, when they were older and stronger, they would seek the men out to avenge their families. Now, finally, the two of them have grown to an age where they feel they are ready to begin their great hunt. However, if they wish to be strong enough to fight these men when the time arrives, then they will need someone to train them in the complex ways of Wenworld magic. This is where their master comes in: a talking rabbit with an attitude and a penchant for strict discipline. He happens to have more than enough experience with magic to train them efficiently. He agrees to see their quest through to the end, assisting the two teenagers in whatever way he can. The world outside the confines of Ika and Chandi's small town is far larger and more bizarre than they ever could've imagined. They have a lot to learn; about the world, and themselves.

Book excerpt: The Tales of Alvin Maker continue in The Crystal City, the sixth book in the historical fantasy series from the Hugo and Nebula award-winning and New York Times bestselling author of Ender's Game. Using the lore and the folk-magic of the men and women who settled North America, Orson Scott Card has created an alternate world where magic works, and where that magic has colored the entire history of the colonies. Charms and beseechings, hexes and potions, all have a place in the lives of the people of this world. Dowsers find water, the second sight warns of dangers to come, and a torch can read a person's future--or their heart. In this world where "knacks" abound, Alvin, the seventh son of a seventh son, is a very special man indeed. He's a Maker; he has the knack of understanding how things are put together, how to create them, repair them, keep them whole, or tear them down. He can heal hearts as well as bones, he build a house, he can calm the waters or blow up a storm. And he can teach his knack to others, to the measure of their own talent. Alvin has been trying to avert the terrible war that his wife, Peggy, a torch of extraordinary power, has seen down the life-lines of every American. Now she has sent him down the Mizzippy to the city of New Orleans, or Nueva Barcelona as they call it under Spanish occupation. Alvin doesn't know exactly why he's there, but when he and his brother-in-law, Arthur Stuart, find lodgings with a family of abolitionists who know Peggy, he suspects he'll find out soon. But Nueva Barcelona is about to experience a plague, and Alvin's efforts to protect his friends by keeping them healthy will create more danger than he could ever have suspected. And in saving the poor people of the city, Alvin will be put to the greatest test of his life--a test that will draw on all his power. For the time has come for him to turn to his old friend Tenskwa-Tawa, the Red Prophet who controls the lands to the west of the Mizzippy. Now Alvin must take the first steps on the road to the Crystal City that was shown to him in a vision so long ago. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prophetic short stories and apocalyptic novels like The Crystal World made J. G. Ballard a foundational figure in the British New Wave. Rejecting the science fiction of rockets and aliens, he explored an inner space of humanity informed by psychiatry and biology and shaped by surrealism. Later in his career, Ballard's combustible plots and violent imagery spurred controversy--even legal action--while his autobiographical 1984 war novel Empire of the Sun brought him fame. D. Harlan Wilson offers the first career-spanning analysis of an author who helped steer SF in new, if startling, directions. Here was a writer committed to moral ambiguity, one who drowned the world and erected a London high-rise doomed to descend into savagery--and coolly picked apart the characters trapped within each story. Wilson also examines Ballard's methods, his influence on cyberpunk, and the ways his fiction operates within the sphere of our larger culture and within SF itself.

Book excerpt: _______________________ A DRAMATIC FICTIONAL PORTRAIT OF THE US-MEXICO BORDER, MIGRATION, AND ITS IMPACT ON PEOPLE'S LIVES _______________________ Through this network of nine personal stories, Carlos Fuentes sets out to explain Mexico and America to each other – and to the rest of the world. He presents a dramatic fictional portrait of the relationship between the United States and Mexico, as played out in a Mexican dynasty led by a powerful Mexican oligarch with complex ties north of the border. It is the story of Mexican families who send their sons north to provide for whole villages with dollars and of Mexican tycoons who exploit their own people. Young Jose Francisco grows up in Texas, determined to write about the border world – the immigrants and illegals, Mexican poverty and Yankee prosperity – stories to break the stand-off silence with a victory shout, to shatter at last the crystal frontier.

This gripping fantasy adventure (inspired by a real kid's idea) doubles as a creative writing guide for young writers! An enchanted arrow pierces the wall of Hillview--the city is under attack! Years ago, a powerful crystal crown was stolen from a group of magic wielders called Lysors. Lacking the crown's protection, the Lysors hid themselves behind the city walls, shut off from the rest of the world. But with danger upon them once more, can Laura, a spunky girl with a knack for adventure, journey outside Hillview . . . and reclaim the crystal crown? "Changing kids' lives, one story at a time" is the motto of the Story Pirates, a group of professional comedians and teachers who bring kids' writing to life in animated short films, on their hit podcast, and in theaters and schools across America. Like the first two books, Stuck in the Stone Age and Digging Up Danger, this imaginative fantasy is based on an idea from a real kid! The story is also a jumping-off point for an introduction to the basics of creative writing. With the help of Story Pirate Captain Vincent Rolo and the Fantasy Creation Zone, readers can use this novel as inspiration to create their OWN great fantasy adventure!

Book excerpt: Bestselling author Barbara Walker debunks the tall tales surrounding crystal mysticism and offers instead an intelligent alternative that includes a complete guide to minerals and their histories. Because of her profound admiration for the beauty and mystery of crystals, Barbara Walker reveals in this two-part examination what crystals truly are, what they can -- and cannot do, and what they have meant to cultures down through the ages. She exposes the crystal mystics' grotesque ignorance of the very subject of which they claim expertise and presents detailed discussions on crystal "vibrations," healing, and energies. She points with humor and insight to the incomprehensible "word salad" crystal mystics use to explain their notions. Then, featuring an illustrated A to Z listing of all the minerals used in esoteric studies, Walker presents the true history, mythology, and attributes of each stone. This invaluable reference is for anyone interested in the facts and fiction of crystal mysticism.
