Written in a vivid and engaging style, Kingston's novel is a prime example of 19th-century maritime literature, capturing the essence of life at sea during this time period. The narrative is rich in detail, providing readers with a realistic portrayal of the challenges faced by sailors and the excitement of discovering new lands. With its focus on the sea and seafaring, 'The Cruise of the Frolic' offers a unique perspective on the era of maritime exploration and trade. Kingston's descriptive prose brings the setting to life, immersing readers in the world of sailing ships and daring escapades. William Henry Giles Kingston, a British author and sailor, drew on his firsthand experiences at sea to write 'The Cruise of the Frolic.' His passion for maritime adventures shines through in the novel, as he skillfully weaves together a tale of courage and discovery. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cruise of the Raider “Wolf” is not intended as another war book; it is the story of one of the strangest and greatest sea adventures of modern times. The Wolf has become a legendary figure—a name connected with strange happenings at sea; but to most people it is only a name. The actual cruise was a shadowy, mysterious affair; and for many reasons the history of the cruise has remained equally vague. Briefly, this raider slipped out of Germany in 1916, and for fifteen months roamed the seas of the world depending for fuel and food on the captures she made. Her very existence depended on these captures not becoming known. Ships encountering the Wolf therefore simply disappeared, their fate unknown. The raider roamed the Atlantic, Indian, Pacific oceans, even touched the Arctic and Antarctic seas. And she capped this unparalleled cruise by running the blockade back to Kiel. Incidentally, the Wolf was the only enemy warship to enter Australian or New Zealand waters. She mined the coasts of both these countries. After the raider’s return to Germany there was a world-wide blaze of publicity. The reception of the Wolf’s men in Berlin was one of the outstanding war events in the German capital. Then the Wolf disappeared from public notice as quickly as she became famous. One reason for this was that Captain Nerger, the raider’s commander, was not a publicity seeker and was not in particularly high favour in Germany. It was necessary to receive him with honour after he brought his ship back from such a cruise, but after that he was quietly moved to an obscure post and was heard of no more. The author was a prisoner aboard the raider for the last nine months of the cruise.

Book excerpt: World War II is raging when virtually an entire squadron of new fighter planes depart Tarawa for a seven hundred mile flight south. It's supposed to be a routine trip, but only Lt. Jack Page, a member of the Marine Corps Reserves, makes it to his destination. Twenty-two other pilots are missing, and it's up to Major Rum Collins to find out what went wrong. With so many messages rocketing across the Pacific, it is hard to track down any of the pilots. Collins wonders where they are, why no emergency radio signals were detected and if it's possible that the Japanese somehow took the pilots as prisoners. While Collins and his close circle of fellow Marines know that they are investigating one of the worst disasters in aviation history, they keep the story under wraps. The investigation is labeled top secret, and everyone waits for the truth to be discovered in Sea Eagle Down.

The complete range of hardware used in land, sea and air forces throughout the world at the time of publication is covered, from tanks to rocket systems, helicopters to cruise missiles, alongside full details of size, weight and operational range. The book’s main strength lies in the detail it gives of armament and associated ammunition capabilities, and of the sensors and other electronics required for the weapons to be used effectively. A key title amongst Routledge reference reissues, Christopher Chant’s important work will be of great value to students and professionals requiring a comprehensive and accessible reference guide, as well as to weapons ‘buffs’.

Book excerpt: '[A] beautiful book... [an] exceptional and intense quality of observation glows from every page... A wisdom that we need now, more than ever before.' Joyce McMillan, The Scotsman In the endless light of summer days, and the magical gloaming of the wee small hours, nature in Jim's beloved Highlands, Perthshire and Trossachs heartlands is burgeoning freely, as though there is one long midsummer's eve, nothing reserved. For our flora and fauna, for the very land itself, this is the time of extravagant growth, flowering and the promise of fruit and the harvest to come. But despite the abundance, as Jim Crumley attests, summer in the Northlands is no Wordsworthian idyll. Climate chaos and its attendant unpredictable weather brings high drama to the lives of the animals and birds he observes. There is also a wild, elemental beauty to the land, mountains, lochs, coasts and skies, a sense of nature at its very apex during this, the most beautiful and lush of seasons. Jim chronicles it all: the wonder, the tumult, the spectacle of summer.
