Emigrating to Israel in 1983, she takes us to a boarding school where she cares for newly arrived Ethiopian teenage immigrants. We follow her next to a small Israeli Arab town. In 1988, she takes us back to China as it can never be seen again, and through her students' lives, watches its tumultuous changes from then until 2005. Taiwan, Macau, Bali, and Korea also become "home," while New Zealand, Fiji, Turkey, Vietnam, Russia, and Iceland, among others, beckon briefly, but she always returns to China. Through the enthralling details of the everyday life of ordinary people, the reader virtually lives their struggles, fears, achievements, joys and dreams. Curiosity, intensity, and the journals she keeps along the way are her constant traveling companions. This independent budget traveler keenly experiences cultures, like a hummingbird with feet planted firmly in mid-air, hovering, drinking deeply, and then flitting away to return another day. Interwoven throughout are her personal, emotional, and spiritual journeys. This is a true life odyssey any seasoned or armchair traveler will want to explore.

What they didn't discover is his lack of compassion and his fascination with death. He honed the skills of a killer during his period in the orphanage. He went on to become a serial killer where he took his vacations on the luxurious cruise ship Ellen Jean.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the sociology of sailing and yachting. Drawing on original research, and employing a theoretical framework based on the work of Pierre Bourdieu, the book argues that sailing is, still, an upper-middle-class activity that has much to tell us about the wider sociology of leisure and sport. The book examines the historical foundations of blue-water sailing as established by naval and colonial shipping, to trace the roots of contemporary sailing and yachting culture. It also examines archives of sailing narratives and cruising guides, as well as the children’s books of Arthur Ransome, arguing that this archival material offers a social rather than a psychological interpretation of the ‘bodily investment’ in sailing. The book uses Bourdieu’s concepts of ‘illusio’ – an investment of time, emotion and body into a worthwhile activity – and ‘habitus’, or lifeworld, alongside contemporary data sets, to examine the yacht club as a social institution, including why many boats never go out on the water, the relationship between yacht clubs and the state, and social issues as manifested in yacht clubs, such as sexism, racism and homophobia. Offering a vigorous sociological critique of yachting and sailing, this book is fascinating reading for anybody with an interest in the sociology of leisure and sport, subcultures, social theory, or social issues in wider society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An epic, kaleidoscopic story of four women connected across time and place by an invisible thread and their determination to shape their own stories, from the acclaimed author of The Mother Fault. Shortlisted for the ABIA Literary Fiction Book of the Year 2024 Longlisted for the Stella Prize and Indie Book Awards 2024 Sydney Morning Herald Best Reads of the Year for 2023 One of the lucky few with a job during the Depression, Peggy’s just starting out in life. She’s a bagging girl at the Angliss meatworks in Footscray, a place buzzing with life as well as death, where the gun slaughterman Jack has caught her eye – and she his. How is her life connected to Hilda’s, almost a hundred years later, locked inside during a plague, or La’s, further on again, a singer working shifts in a warehouse as her eggs are frozen and her voice is used by AI bots? Let alone Maz, far removed in time, diving for remnants of a past that must be destroyed? Is it by the river that runs through their stories, eternal yet constantly changing – or by the mysterious Hummingbird Project, and the great question of whether the march of progress can ever be reversed? Propulsive, tender and engrossing, this genre-bending novel is a feast for the heart as well as the mind and senses. For fans of David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas, Michelle de Kretser’s The Life to Come and Jennifer Egan’s The Candy House, it confirms Mildenhall as one of the most ambitious and dynamic writers in the country. 'Kate Mildenhall is such an exciting writer to read … This generous, playful novel speaks to themes of climate change, survival and holding space for each other, as well as the enduring power of female friendship.' The Guardian ‘Spellbinding, genre-defying, and powerful in its vision of the future … The Hummingbird Effect is a devastating novel that exposes the ways the future is seeded in the past.’ Australian Book Review
