I had all sorts of notions about ponies, but when I didn't get one as a boy, I planned to have more ponies when I grew up, and better ones, than any one ever had before. In fact, I built a pony castle in the air. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Log of the Cruise of Schooner Julius Webb: Which Sailed From Norwich, Ct;, July 23d, 1858, Having on Board the "Wachusett Club," of Worcester Mass Owing to some misunderstanding among the authorities, the church bells were not rung, nor was there any discharge of cannon in honor of our arrival, but with these trifling omissions, all proper respect was shown to us. At this place our Sailing Master, Capt. Elijah Bolles, an "old salt," still in the brine, was shipped, as also were fresh milk, and the seven members of the Club to whom allusion has been made, who left Worcester by the steamboat train of 23 d. Here, also, reluctantly, we put ashore a citizen of Worcester, who had made the passage with us from Norwich, where he had "done his business" in the hope to make the entire trip with us, but was recalled by other engagements, having sundry proof sheets at this time running through the press, to which the owners imperatively demanded his personal attention. With much regret we bade him adieu, after solemnly toasting his health in lemonade. At 8 A.M. our anchor was weighed, and with wind about due north, we stood for Gardner's Bay, which anchorage ground we reached in about three hours. About this time several members of the Club took some lemonade. Fishing commenced. At 11.30 a loud shout announced the capture of the first fish - Brother Dennis having landed upon the deck a specimen of the "shark" species, y'elept by the sailors "dog-fish." In answer to our inquiries as to its eating qualities, Capt. Bolles pronounced it "good!" Opinion doubted: strong prejudice manifested against the "critter" for table use. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Cruise in an Opium Clipper The Opium trade, and there is the vessel, pointing towards a moderately sized, trim-looking schooner lying at anchor in the river not far from where we were standing. She looked a perfect beauty as she lay there, with her boarding nettings triced up all round her, and her guns run out and shining in the rays of the sun, so brightly were they polished. Her booms were also swung out for the various boats to hang on to, for there was more room in the river then, than there is now. I doubt much if the increased traffic would admit of vessels having boat booms swung out nowadays. I had heard a good deal about this opium trade, one way and another. Some condemned it, while others laughed at their conscientious scruples. I was young and eager for adventures out of the ordinary way of a seafaring life, so I replied to my questioner that I. Between swims it was our wont to come out and lie in the sand and let our skins breathe the warm air and soak in the sunshine. Roscoe was a yachtsman. I had followed the sea a bit. It was inevitable that we should talk about boats. We talked about small boats, and the seaworthiness of small boats. We instanced Captain Slocum and his three years' voyage around the world in the Spray. We asserted that we were not afraid to go around the world in a small boat, say forty feet long. We asserted furthermore that we would like to do it. We asserted finally that there was nothing in this world we'd like better than a chance to do it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cruise of the Frolic: A Sea Story The "Cruise of the 'Frolic'" has already met with so many marks of favor, that it is hoped it will be welcomed not the less warmly in its new and more attractive form. The yachting world especially received the narrative of my adventures in good part; two or three, however, among whom was the O'Wiggins, insisted that I had caricatured them, and talked of demanding satisfaction at the point of the sword, or the muzzle of a pistol. I assured them then, as I do now, that on the word of an officer and a gentleman, I had not the slightest intention of wounding the feelings of any human being; and I entreated their pardon, if in shooting at a venture I had hit an object at which I had not taken aim. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Coronet Memories: Log of Schooner-Yacht Coronet on Her Off-Shore Cruises From 1893 to 1899 IN October, '1893, Mr. Arthur Curtiss James became the pos sessor of the schooner yacht Coronet, and shortly after he and his wife invited a small party to accompany them on their first cruise to the West Indies. Mr. And Mrs. William M. Kings ley, Miss Maud Parsons, and Mr. Arthur W. Francis were the chosen few, and Monday, February 12th, found all with eager anticipation at Tebo's Wharf, Brooklyn, where the Coronet was moored, tuned for her trip in every particular. With pride, and it must be said with slight misgivings, too, we gathered on deck to take our farewell of the friends who had come to bid usbon voyage. The ocean seemed big and our boat small. We were all novices at deep sea yachting, and the great unknown lay before us. The weather was threatening; the outlook discouraging; a strong wind blew from the wrong quarter, and snowclouds menaced. However, after our friends departed, we set about stowing away our belongings and getting acquainted with our surroundings; at luncheon we were cheerful but fretting some what at the delay. Toward evening snow began to fall, and we turned in feeling like an arctic expedition, rather than one bound for sunny climes. We awoke in the morning to find the ground deep with snow, and Captain Crosby, our old sail ing master, dismayed at the dirty day, as he expressed it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fisheries and Fishery Industries of the United States It is now nearly four hundred years Since these grounds were first fished upon by Europeans, and their resources are still unfailing; but the fishing interests have been mainly transferred to the New World, France alone of European countries having continued to send fishing vessels across the Atlantic down to 1880. Since then, however, the Portuguese have begun to exhibit some activity in connection with the cod fishery of the Grand Bank, and in the Spring and sum mer of 1885 bought several New England fishing schooners and fitted out others from home ports. Their voyages proving generally successful, they have added more vessels to their fishing fleet during the latter part of this year, and it is quite possible that, in the course of a few seasons. Y., To Boston, Mass., Via Cape Chidley, Labrador, July Third to September Twenty-Sixth, 1926 To my mind the most important single result of all our work was not connected with our scientific observations. We proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that it is possible to carry out serious investiga tion in the ocean in a small boat. The Chance could be made to lay almost: still during the difficult process of taking subsurface temperatures and soundings, or by the proper trimming 'of the sails we could tow plankton nets at any desired speed. Previously oceanographic work has only been accomplished at great expense both because of the use of large boats and because of professional crews. In the Chance, because of the design of the boat, we wereable to get along perfectly with five men. When, after a particularly hard day's work, we needed sleep, the schooner could be hove to and sailing forgotten until the first man woke up. Again, in a small boat the investigator is in such close contact with the ocean that he gets a very much better chance of studying it than from the deck of a large steamer. That a small boat is as safe at sea in a storm has been shown time and again. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cruise of the Midge Bow an Irishman, the son of an Irishwoman; educated in Scotland, the country of my father, an ancient mariner, who, as master and supercargo, had sailed his own ship for many years in the Virginia trade; removed to England at the age of seventeen, in consequence of his death; I had, by the time I arrived at majority, passed four years of my mercantile apprenticeship in my paternal uncle's counting - house, an extensive merchant in that modern Tyre, the enterprising town of Liverpool during which period, young as I was, I had already made four voyages in different vessels of his to foreign parts - to the West Indies, the Brazils, the Costa Firme, and the United States of America. Being naturally a rambling, harumscarum sort of a young chap, this sort of life jumped better with my disposition than being perched on the t0p of a tall mahogany tripod, poring over invoices, daybooks, journals, and ledgers, with the shining ebony-coloured desk jammed into the pit'ol' my stomach below, and its arbour of bright brass rods constantly perverting the integrity of my curls above; so at the period when the scene opens, I had with much ado prevailed on my uncle to let me proceed once more on a cruise, instead of a senior clerk, in charge of two of his ships, bound to the African coast, to trade for ivory and gold dust, and to fill up with palm oil and hardwood timbers.
