Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Toleration plays a key role in liberal thought. This book explores our current understanding of toleration in liberal theory and practice. Toleration has traditionally been characterized as the willingness to put up with others or their actions or practices despite the fact that one considers them as objectionable. Toleration has thus been regarded as one of the core aspects of liberalism: as an indispensable democratic virtue and as a constitutive part of liberal political practice. In modern liberal societies, where deep disagreements about social values and ways of life are widespread, toleration still seems to be of crucial importance. However, contemporary debates on toleration cover an immense variety of theoretical and political issues ranging from controversies over its exact understanding and conceptual scope as well as its practical boundaries, e.g., regarding freedom of expression or the legitimate role of religious symbols in educational institutions. The contributions to this volume take up a number of carefully selected key questions and problems emerging from these ongoing theoretical and political controversies in order to explore and shed new light on pivotal conflicts and tensions that pervade different conceptions of toleration. The chapters in this book were originally published in the Critical Review of International Social and Political Philosophy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The political and environmental crises of the twenty-first century require new approaches to the way we think and act politically. This book explores the potential for engagement between green and civic republican thought as part of these new approaches. The green and civic republican traditions have important historical and conceptual connections. They share an emphasis on the idea of interdependence, the common good as distinct from individual and sectional interests, and a corresponding critique of freedom as non-interference and of arguments for minimising the state. Both see the human project as marked by vulnerability, and the achievement of stability and sustainability as a critical though fragile goal, in whose realisation the state must play a significant role. Both focus accordingly on constitutional law, active citizenship and participatory democracy, and adopt a critical stance towards economic inequality and capitalist economic growth. The chapters address these in a variety of ways - from examining fundamental concepts: freedom, rights and political judgement, through analysing the potential grounds for connections between green and republican political theory – vulnerability, limits, sustainability and civic virtue – to outlining the kind of agonistic republican politics and green political economy that these imply. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Critical Review of Social and Political Philosophy.

Book excerpt: 'coherent, innovative... important new research [and] impressive quantity and quality of data... its conclusions challenge existing assumptions that can influence thinking about Russia' "Dr Wendy Slater, Lecturer in Contemporary Russian History, School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University College, London" 'an original empirical and theoretical contribution, both to Russian Studies and more generally to Migration Studies... a mine of original and interesting material' "Khalid Koser, Lecturer in Human Geography, University College, London" Following the collapse of the USSR in 1991 and the rapid political, social and economic change that ensued, widespread population movements took place across the former territory of the Soviet Union. "Migrant Resettlement in the Russian Federation" offers a new perspective on one of the most significant movements - the ethnic Russian and Russian-speaking population moving from Soviet successor states to the Russian Federation. While the substantial domestic and foreign policy implications of this migration movement have been recognized, there has to date been little exploration of another crucial aspect of this phenomenon: the micro-level sociocultural experiences and implications of movement and resettlement, and the nature of migrant response. Based on original empirical data collected by the author, this timely book offers a unique insight into the individual and collective experiences of movement and resettlement among Russian migrants 'returning' to the Russian Federation over the period 1991-2002. Moya Flynn uses different levels of analysis (local, regional, national and global) to open up fresh perspectives on the nature of the Russian migration regime and government migration policy. The book offers the first in-depth examination of non-governmental development in the area of migration in post-Soviet Russia and provides new understandings of the experience of migration and resettlement at the individual level, specifically through an exploration of understandings of 'home' and 'homeland' and a focus on the role of migrant networks. "Migrant Resettlement in the Russian Federation" is a major new contribution to current debates in migration studies. Its unique synthesis of original theoretical and empirical material will appeal to students of contemporary Russian politics, geography, culture and society, academics and policymakers alike.

Book excerpt: Risk assessment of metals may need specific guidance in how to handle natural background, essentiality, and long historical use of metals. It may also be necessary to take bio-availability into account. The aim of the present project was to critically review proposals on principles for risk assessment of metals (MERAG), developed by the metals industry, in co-operation with the UK Government during 2005-2006. The different MERAG proposals were reviewed by different Nordic consultancies, and their views are summarised in the report. The project was initiated and coordinated by the Nordic Risk Assessment Project (NORAP), which receives funding from the Nordic Chemicals group, a subgroup to the Nordic Council of Ministers. This review was considered urgent, in order to be prepared for a possible proposal to implement the MERAG principles within the Technical Guidance Document on Chemical Safety Assessment, which is developed for use under the REACH regulation.
