This book was released on 2010-06 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important open questions in modern physics is the riddle of the nature of Dark Matter. Observations, e.g. galactic rotation curves, show that about a quarter of the mass in the universe is in form of Dark Matter. These, up to now only indirect, observations are the main motivation for direct Dark Matter search experiments as CRESST-II, which aim to identify the nature of Dark Matter. CRESST-II is searching directly for Dark Matter in the form of hypothetical WIMPs. Within the framework of this work the functional principles of the CRESST-II detector modules are analyzed and discussed. Therefor the parameters have been identified which determine their sensitivity and the understanding of their behavior has been developed in detail.

Book Synopsis Searching for Dark Matter with the ATLAS Detector by : Steven Schramm
Download or read book Searching for Dark Matter with the ATLAS Detector written by Steven Schramm and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes the search for Dark Matter at the LHC in the mono-jet plus missing transverse momentum final state, using the full dataset recorded in 2012 by the ATLAS Experiment. It is the first time that the number of jets is not explicitly restricted to one or two, thus increasing the sensitivity to new signals. Instead, a balance between the most energetic jet and the missing transverse momentum is required, thus selecting mono-jet-like final states. Collider searches for Dark Matter have typically used signal models employing effective field theories (EFTs), even when comparing to results from direct and indirect detection experiments, where the difference in energy scale renders many such comparisons invalid. The thesis features the first robust and comprehensive treatment of the validity of EFTs in collider searches, and provides a means by which the different classifications of Dark Matter experiments can be compared on a sound and fair basis.

Book excerpt: The Fourth HEIDELBERG International Conference on Dark Matter in Astro and Particle Physics, DARK2002, was held in Cape Town, South Africa, in the period 4-9 February 2002. This majestic natural area was the site of the first conference of this series (hosted since 1996 in Heidelberg) to be held outside of Germany. Dark Matter has become one of the most exciting and central fields of as trophysics, particle physics and cosmology. The conference covered, as usual for this series, a large range of topics, theoretical and experimental. Topics included Astronomical Evidence for Dark Matter, the Cosmic Microwave Background, Supersymmetry, Inflation and Dark Energy, Structure Formation, Hot and Cold Dark Matter, and Ultrahigh Energy Cosmic Rays all of which were represented by experts in the field. It was very nice to see again many of our 'old' friends in Dark Matter here in South Africa. The organizers were very glad to see, in addition to world experts, the new generation here. Many young participants gave very nice professional talks during the conference. We are grateful to John Ellis for doing an incredible job preparing his excellent summary talk during the sessions. Some special interest and intensive discussions were naturally raised by the first announcement of terrestrial evidence for hot dark matter, obtained from neutrino less double beta decay. This now adds to the evidence for cold dark matter which we have from DAM A for several years already, and which remained unchallenged up to now by other experiments.

Book Synopsis Search for Dark Matter with ATLAS by : Ruth Pöttgen
Download or read book Search for Dark Matter with ATLAS written by Ruth Pöttgen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-29 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes in detail a search for weakly interacting massive particles as possible dark matter candidates, making use of so-called mono-jet events. It includes a detailed description of the run-1 system, important operational challenges, and the upgrade for run-2. The nature of dark matter, which accounts for roughly 25% of the energy-matter content of the universe, is one of the biggest open questions in fundamental science. The analysis is based on the full set of proton-proton collisions collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at √s = 8 TeV. Special attention is given to the experimental challenges and analysis techniques, as well as the overall scientific context beyond particle physics. The results complement those of non-collider experiments and yield some of the strongest exclusion bounds on parameters of dark matter models by the end of the Large Hadron Collider run-1. Details of the upgrade of the ATLAS Central Trigger for run-2 are also included.

Book Synopsis The Mystery of Dark Matter by : Wolfgang Kapferer
Download or read book The Mystery of Dark Matter written by Wolfgang Kapferer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-17 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Get ready to embark on the exciting search for dark matter—the invisible mass that dominates our universe. This popular science book explains why this mysterious dark matter has been incorporated into the standard model of the universe and how scientists are able to “observe” the invisible. The book starts with the early indications of the existence of dark matter, including the strange cohesion of galaxy clusters, before moving on to modern observations like cosmic background radiation. Along the way, you will learn about the direct and indirect methods being used by researchers to track down dark matter and whatever is behind this strange phenomenon. The Mystery of Dark Matter will appeal to general readers who wish to understand what scientists actually know about dark matter, along with the methods they use to help crack the mystery. This book is a translation of the original German 1st edition Das Rätsel Dunkle Materie by Wolfgang Kapferer, published by Springer-Verlag GmbH Deutschland in 2018.The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation. Springer Nature works continuously to further the development of tools for the production of books and on the related technologies to support the authors.

This book was released on 1996-10-22 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The search for dark matter is one of the most relevant topics in astroparticle physics today. It involves many different experimental techniques that should collectively contribute significantly to the identification of the nature and characteristics of the dark matter constituents, offering at the same time much room for new technological developments. The theoretical framework is also essential, both for properly interpreting the different results and for suggesting the most interesting possible candidates and search strategies. This book compares the methods, the developments and the results.
Download or read book COSMO-97 written by Leszek Roszkowski and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998-09-22 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deciphering the script for the Big Bang has now become a joint effort of particle physicists and cosmologists. The origin and first moments of the early Universe were determined by the same fundamental processes which are studied in terrestrial accelerators and whose traces from the early Universe can be seen in astrophysical observations. It is now almost universally accepted that most of the debris left over from the Big Bang is likely to be in the form of particle dark matter. Identifying its nature and measuring its abundance in the Universe have become major goals of theorists and experimentalists alike. This volume reviews the progress made at the frontiers of research in these rapidly expanding fields. A broad range of topics, from inflation to primordial black holes to physics at the Planck era, and to dark matter and neutrinos — both reviews and reports on the most recent advances — is presented by leaders in the field.
