Book excerpt: One of the greatest and most celebrated Southern writers of his day, George Washington Cable (1844-1925) helped to lead the local colorist movement of the late 1800s with his pioneering use of dialect and his skill with the short story form. A Southern reformist, Cable wrote faithful portrayals of Creoles and their culture that depict the Creole way of life during the transitory post-Civil War period. Originally published in 1879, Old Creole Days catapulted Cable to national recognition. The stories within reflect the everyday life of the New Orleans Creoles through a mixture of humor and the unique Creole patois. Cable's best-known work, Old Creole Days includes such famous stories as

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Acadians of Louisiana and Their Dialect Everything concerning French Louisiana seems at this time to possess an interest for the public; and it has been my purpose in some measure, to give an account of its language, its literature, its dialects, its folklore and its inhabitants. My papers published in the Transactions of our Modern Language Association have been so kindly received that I feel encouraged to continue my labors in a field vast and fertile but difficult to explore. The work to be done is, to a great extent, one of original research and of patient investigation, and it will require several years to present a tolerably complete tableau of picturesque French Louisiana. I now desire to present another feature of the picture by giving a brief sketch of the Acadians and their dialect. It may not be amiss to begin this study by taking a birds-eye view of the history of Acadia, from the settlement of the colony to the dispersion of the inhabitants. We shall then accompany Evangeline to the beautiful banks of the Teche and follow her canoe and that of Gabriel as they glide along its placid waters, leaving scarcely a ripple on the gentle stream which the names of the unhappy lovers have rendered immortal. I. Even before the time of John Cabot the Normans, the Bretons and the Basques are said to have known Newfoundland, and the first description of the shores of our United States was made in 1524 to a French King, Francis the First, by the Florentine Verrazano. Ten years later we see the bold son of St. Malo sailing on the broad St. Lawrence, which was to be the scene of so many conflicts for the possession of its rugged shores. In 1535 Jacques Cartier saw the future site of Quebec and Montreal and became acquainted with the Indian tribes, the future allies of the French in their contest with the English. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Creole Days IN the heart of New Orleans stands a large four story brick building, that has so stood for about three-quarters of a century. Its rooms are rented to a class of persons occupying them simply for lack of activity to find better and cheaper quarters elsewhere. With its gray stucco peeling off in broad patches, it has a solemn look of gentility in rags, and stands, or, as it were, hangs, about the corner of two ancient streets, like a faded fop who pretends to be looking for employment. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Creole Families of New Orleans This book comes in response to a long - felt wish of an humble student of Louisiana history to know more about the early actors in it, to go back of the printed names in the pages of Gayarre and Martin, and peep, if possible, into the personality of the men who followed Bienville to found a city upon the Mississippi, and who, remaining on the spot, continued their good work by founding families that have carried on their work and their good names. It has been a pleasure to follow the traces they impressed upon the soil two hundred years ago, and to look through the vista of years that opened before them when they crossed the seas, trusting their names, their fortune, their faith to a new country. Their genealogical records bear witness to their good blood; their "maintenances de noblesse" are still in existence, brought with them from France, in simple accord with what they considered a family necessity, as much so as a house and furniture. Traditions are still carrying a pale reflection of coloring and wavering outline of them. Little stories of them are still to be met hanging on a withering memory like shriveled berries on a tree that the next blast will rend from their twigs and scatter on the ground. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louisiana Folk-Tales, Vol. 2: In French Dialect and English, Translation The tales are given first in the Creole dialect, then in a faithful but not literal translation, as it is desirable to preserve the interest of the story. The study of the Creole dialect is of importance and interest, and the tales have been carefully written in Louisiana dialect, in order that the material may be of use to the philologist. In the Appendix are reproduced fourteen stories already published in 1888 in the Transactions of the Modern Language Association of America, and in the Journal of American folk-lore, to the end that the reader may have in one volume a complete collection of Louisiana folk-tales. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Colonial St. Louis: Building a Creole Capital In the nineteenth century a modern city completely grew over the old town of St. Louis and its plowlands. Except for the pattern of the streets we must look in vain for a single landmark of the early period. Even the Mississippi itself has been so changed that the first settlers would no longer know it. It is the literary task of this essay to provide an eighteenth century view of the Creole settlement which was the capital of Upper Louisiana. To learn of its nature we must go to the surviving documents. Fortunately, there are many of them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
