It is common practice to perform a preliminary test of the null hypothesis of parallelism for each treatment group before proceeding with further inference. If the null hypothesis is accepted, that is, that the slope of each of the straight lines is the same, then further inference proceeds on the assumption that the slopes of the lines are actually the same. Of course it is possible that the particular slopes of the lines are different, even when the null hypothesis of parallelism is accepted. This thesis will focus on inference in the form of confidence intervals for treatment differences. We will specifically consider how a preliminary hypothesis test for parallelism affects the coverage probability of these confidence intervals. This is explored by conducting Monte-Carlo simulations based on a real life data set using the programming language R. The real life data are about the effect of additives on weight gain in animals, which has four treatments with three subjects in each treatment group. It turns out that performing an initial test of parallelism is problematic because the minimum coverage probability of the confidence intervals falls below the nominal coverage. Hence the confidence intervals constructed after a preliminary test of parallelism are in fact, misleading.

Book excerpt: We use the form of the naive 1 - DC[alpha] confidence interval to motivate a new frequentist 1 - DC[alpha] confidence interval that utilizes uncertain prior information about the regression parameters. This interval has expected length that (a) is relatively small when this prior information is correct and (b) has maximum value that is not too large. It has coverage probability 1 - DC[alpha] throughout the parameter space and, unlike the naive confidence interval, has endpoints that are continuous functions of the data. Additionally, this interval coincides with the standard 1 - DC[alpha] confidence interval when the data happens to strongly contradict the prior information. We then use compromise decision theory to find bounds on the performance of this new confidence interval for large samples. Finally, we consider a 2 x 2 factorial experiment with more than one replicate. We describe new simultaneous frequentist confidence intervals for the population cell means, with simultaneous confidence coefficient 1 - DC[alpha], that utilize uncertain prior information that the two-factor interaction is zero.

Mostly, the situation when the variance is known is only of theoretical interest. There are many practical situations when the coe cient of variation is known. This situation arises in medical, biological and environmental studies. In the theoretical part of the thesis, we proved that the considered estimates are unbiased estimator with minimum variance and asymptotically normal. We con- struct statistical tests for the normal mean based on the best asymptotically normal estimator with minimum variance and the minimum risk scale equivariant estimator and the modi ed version of them. In the computational part, we calculate the cov- erage probability and width length of con dence interval of ve estimators. We also develop hypothesis tests for normal mean in case of known coe cient of variation. We estimate the type I error and the power of the proposed statistics under di er- ent situations. The simulation results show that all proposed test statistics perform better for a large sample and a small value of coe cient of variation.
