This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louis the Fourteenth and the Court of France in the Seventeenth Century, Vol. 1 The reign of Louis XIV. of France, whether regarded politically, socially, or morally, was undoubtedly the most striking which that country has ever known. The magnificence of his Court, the successes of his armies, and the number of illustrious names that embellished the century over which his rule extended, drew the attention of all Europe to the person of the monarch who had relieved the nation from the thrall to which it had so long been subjected by the domination of a grasping and imperious minister, and assumed the authority and power of regality, as well as its mere visible attributes. Louis XIV. was kingly from his birth. Even when deprived, by the penuriousness of Mazarin, not only of the luxuries which were his birthright, but even of the very necessaries which nine-tenths of his subjects could command at will, his spirit remained unbent; while his innate sense of the indignity offered to his person engendered a feeling of hatred towards the Cardinal, which enabled him patiently to await the hour of his emancipation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Women of Versailles: The Court of Louis XIV Rarely has a city presented a spectacle so striking as that afforded by Versailles during the struggle of the army against the Commune. Between the grand century and our epoch, between the majesty of old France and the intestine broils of new France, between the dismal horrors of which Paris was the scene and the radiant souvenirs of the city of the Sun-King, there was a contrast as painful as it was startling. Those avenues where one might see the head of the government and the illustrious defeated man of Reichshoffen, that place of arms encumbered with cannons, those red flags, sad trophies of the civil war, which were taken to the Assembly as tokens of mourning as well as of victory, that magnificent palace whence seemed to issue a suppliant voice adjuring our soldiers to save so fair a heritage of historic splendors and national grandeurs, all filled the soul with profound emotion. Book Synopsis The Great Days of Versailles by : G. F. Bradby
Download or read book The Great Days of Versailles written by G. F. Bradby and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Days of Versailles: Studies From Court Life in the Later Years of Louis XIV The following pages do not profess to be history; still less do they pretend to throw any new light upon a period which is already so exhaustively known through its memoirs and its letters. All that I have attempted to do is to reconstruct from familiar materials a picture of Court life at Versailles in the later years of Louis XIV - the manners, customs, and interests of a unique society which has no counterpart in modern Europe - and to give a brief account of the private life and character of some of the people who figured most prominently in the events of the time. My hope is that such a compilation may be of use to those who intend to study the French eighteenth-century memoirs, by making them familiar with some of the personal questions which counted for so much at the French Court; and, also, that it may not be without interest for that large class of people who have neither time nor opportunity to study the period in detail, and who are forced to be content with the summaries of others. Download or read book History of Louis XIV (Classic Reprint) written by John S. C. Abbott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Louis XIV WE all live a double life: the external life. Which the world sees, and the internal life of hopes and fears, joys and griefs, temptations and sins, which the world sees not, and of which it knows but little. None lead this double life more emphatically than those who are seated upon thrones. Though this historic sketch contains allu sions to all the most important events in the reign of Louis XIV., it has been the main ob jcet of the writer to develop the inner life of the palace; to lead the reader into the interior of the Louvre, the Tuileries, Versailles, and Marly, and to exhibit the monarch as a man, in the details of domestic privacy. This can more easily be done in reference to Louis XIV. Than any other king. Very many of the prominent members of his house hold left their autobiographies, filled with the minutest incidents of every-day life. Book Synopsis Power and reputation at the court of Louis XIII by : Sharon Kettering
Download or read book Power and reputation at the court of Louis XIII written by Sharon Kettering and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to rehabilitate the reputation of Charles d'Albert, duc de Luynes, the controversial favourite of Louis XIII often maligned by historians. Kettering argues that the traditional historical interpretation of Luynes is significantly influenced by the testimony of Richelieu, who subjected Luynes to a devastating character assassination in his memoirs. Richelieu’s malice and the bias in histories based upon his memoirs justify another look at Luynes’ career. This book sifts through the historical evidence to offer a new perspective on Luynes, arguing that his contributions to the early years of Louis XIII’s government have been insufficiently appreciated, and in the process throws light upon a dark, unpleasant corner of Richelieu’s personality often ignored by historians. As well as advanced students and historians of early modern France, this book should interest those specialising in the history of the European courts, power politics, patronage and printed pamphlet literature.

Book Synopsis Secret History of the French Court Under Richelieu and Mazarin by : Victor Cousin
Download or read book Secret History of the French Court Under Richelieu and Mazarin written by Victor Cousin and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Secret History of the French Court Under Richelieu and Mazarin: Or, Life and Times of Madame De Chevreuse Among the most admired of Victor Cousin's works are his "Studies of the Illustrious Women and the Society of the Seventeenth Century;" and of these none has excited so much attention as his "Life of Madame de Chevreuse." In this charming biography, which certainly reads very much like a romance, the author claims the merit of a scrupulous and exact adherence to the truth of history. He controverts many received opinions and forces the reader to abandon many established hypotheses, but he does it upon the incontestable evidence of cotemporary writers and of documents that were supposed to be lost or not known to exist.
