Book excerpt: The court found that murder had not been committed. The accused was set free. The judges reasoning statement read, by definition, "Murder is the killing of a human being; the Chinaman is not a human being." Mr. Nelson let me think about what I had read for a few moments then simply said, "Son, don't let the bastards grind you down. Do your best, tell the truth and go home. Life is not fair and justice is not always attained."
Book Synopsis Nassau County Police Department by : Jerry Aylward
Download or read book Nassau County Police Department written by Jerry Aylward and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2019 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nassau County Police Department was created in 1925 out of an urgent need for a professional law enforcement agency to provide swift, reliable, and trusted protection for its citizens During those unprecedented times, Greater New York was rapidly encroaching on Nassau County's western border, and the escalating crime rate in this bucolic island setting was due in large part to the Volstead Act, which ushered in the mob-infused Roaring Twenties, with its related violent and turbulent unrest. After the rebellious 1920s and the Great Depression followed a long dark period of global hostilities and impending threats of homeland invasions from foreign enemies in World War II. The founding members of this department, equipped with little other than their dedication, bravery, fortitude, and self sacrifices, established a strong foundation for one of the finest police departments in the country today.

Book Synopsis Civil Service Systems by : George W. Greisinger
Download or read book Civil Service Systems written by George W. Greisinger and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Positive and negative effects of civil service regulations on urban police systems is the focus of this research project conducted over approximately a 2-year period beginning in November 1976. Data from the study were collected from 42 randomly selected American cities, ranging in size from 50,000 to 750,000 persons. In each study site, current civil service laws and police union contracts were collected, interviews were conducted with the most knowledgeable municipal officials and organization representatives, and police departments provided information on programs and policies in a police departmental questionnaire. Supplemental data were provided by the Police Foundation, the National Planning Association, and the FBI. The absence of an overall civil service system which governs police personnel affairs in America is noted. Civil service commissions differ from city to city in the roles they play in police personnel administration and, as a result, in the impacts they have on local officials, on police departmental programs and practices, and on the general quality of local law enforcement. While some commissions pose significant constraints on the abilities of local officials to promote innovative police programs, others work to promote departmental innovation and more efficient criminal apprehension procedures. The study examines a number of issues, among them the statutory supports for local civil service commissions and the impact of community politics and police unionism on local police personnel administration. Proposals for civil service reforms in the urban police context should be tailored to local circumstances and to meaningful variations in civil service roles. Numerous charts, footnotes, a bibliography, and diagrams illustrate the text. Appendixes include content analysis checklists for police bargaining contracts and personnel systems, a police questionnaire, an interview schedule, and a letter to urban executives.

Book Synopsis Redondo Beach Police Department by : Michael L. Stark
Download or read book Redondo Beach Police Department written by Michael L. Stark and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2011-02-07 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Redondo Beach Police Department dates to May 9, 1892, when Marshall S. Rogers was appointed as the citys first marshal. One of the first city ordinances prohibited the discharge of firearms within city limits and provided the option for hiring of a deputy if needed. He was needed, of course, as the city would grow into a major West Coast resort by the 1920s. The department adapted through the changes brought on by the Depression, World War II, and the postwar boom, serving and protecting citizens and fighting crime both unique to beach-city life as well as changing times while enforcing all laws for residents and tourists alike across the dawns of two centuries. In the 21st century, more than 250 sworn officers, support personnel, and volunteers serve one of Southern Californias most respected and innovative departments.
