The first Camp Lee, established as a National Army Cantonment in 1917, trained the 80th Division for service in France. In 1940, Camp Lee was reestablished, and since World War II, has trained hundreds of thousands of Quartermasters, whose numerous skills include military supply, water and petroleum operations, Army field feeding, and parachute rigging for "supply by sky." Fort Lee is also the home of the Defense Commissary Agency and the Army Logistics Management College, which provides advanced schooling for Armed Forces logisticians. For over 60 years, Fort Lee has played a vital role ensuring that America's Army is the best-equipped and most well-supported army in the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Marshall was appointed aide-de-camp to Robert E. Lee on 21 March 1862, and from then until the surrender, he stood at the general?s side. A military secretary, he compiled a remarkable, intimate account of the day-to-day wartime experience of the Confederacy?s most celebrated--and enigmatic--military figure. Marshall?s papers are of three sorts: those intended for a projected life of Lee, those intended for an account of the campaign at Gettysburg, and notes on events of the war. Collected here, these papers provide a unique firsthand look at Lee?s generalship?from the most complete account ever given of the fateful orders issued to Jeb Stuart at Gettysburg, to the only testimony from a Southern witness of the scene in McLean?s house at Appomattox. Marshall?s commentary addresses some of the war?s more intriguing questions: Whose idea was it to fight the second Manassas? What caused Jackson?s delays in the Battles of the Seven Days? Who devised the flank march around Hooker at Chancellorsville? This book?s insights into Robert E. Lee and his military strategy and its close-up report on the Confederacy?s war qualify it as an indispensable part of America?s historical record.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the centennial of the First World War rapidly approaching, historian and bibliographer James T. Controvich offers in The United States in World War I: A Bibliographic Guide the most comprehensive, up-to-date reference bibliography yet published. Organized by subject, this bibliography includes the full range of sources: vintage publications of the time, books, pamphlets, periodical titles, theses, dissertations, and archival sources held by federal and state organizations, as well as those in public and private hands, including historical societies and museums. As Controvich’s bibliographic accounting makes clear, there were many facets of World War I that remain virtually unknown to this day. Throughout, Controvich’s bibliography tracks the primary sources that tell each of these stories—and many others besides—during this tense period in American history. Each entry lists the author, title, place of publication, publisher, date of publication, and page count as well as descriptive information concerning illustrations, plates, ports, maps, diagrams, and plans. The armed forces section carries additional information on rosters, awards, citations, and killed and wounded in action lists. The United States in World War I: A Bibliographic Guide is an ideal research tool for students and scholars of World War I and American history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faced with severe budgetary constraints, a radically reduced force structure, and a crippling intellectual dogmatism, the American Infantry struggled throughout the interwar years to modernize its doctrine. Finlayson examines these difficulties, beginning with an overview of the experiences of the primary combatants of the First World War, comparing their battlefield doctrines with that of the American Expeditionary Force. The brief American appearance on the battlefield did much to shape the convictions of those men assigned the task of developing doctrine after the war. The findings of the post-World War I Superior Board provide valuable insight into how institutional conservatism and the dogmatic approach to new ideas that existed among senior Army leaders stymied possible doctrinal advances. The Army would suffer greatly in the post-war demobilization and the subsequent ravages of the Great Depression. With little money and few soldiers spread around far-flung posts, little advancement in terms of doctrinal development was possible. As the likelihood of war became more imminent in the 1930s, a concerted effort to modernize was made; however, the magnitude of the task made success virtually impossible-a situation that was evident in the Infantry's poor performance in the early battles of the war. The U.S. entry into World war II would, unfortunately, find the infantry branch only partially prepared for the battle field of 1942.
