Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cotter's Saturday Night, and Other Poems The poetry of Burns is altogether the most genuine thing that we find in English literature. Unstudied, artless, often rude, it voices the joys and sorrows, the loves, the aspirations of the human heart, and interprets the beauty of the commonplace, - that beauty which lies all about us, if we had but eyes to see. Burns performed the miracle of the old fairy tale, spinning out of the straw upon the cottage floor a thread of finest gold. It is this clear vision of the beautiful in everyday life, this wide humanity, this deep sincerity, that has made him the most loved and - excepting Shakespeare - the most widely read of all the British poets. There was nothing in the circumstances of his life to make a poet; indeed there was everything to discourage the making of one. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Double Night and Other Poems Before his blindness he had received the bare rudiments of an English education in the country schools of that day. Later he spent a year at the Kentucky Institute for the Blind, and fourteen months at the Ohio Institute, leaving the latter when about twenty years of age. Meanwhile he had applied himself earnestly to the study of music. His mental activity seems to have been stimulated by his deprivations. He read eagerly everything printed in raised type, and, until he lost his hearing, extended his knowledge of books with the aid of friends who enjoyed reading aloud to him. Of the poems in this volume, most were written after Mr. Heady's fortieth year. I have said they are almost unique in interest; nor do I use this term simply because their author is blind and deaf. They contain one of the most elaborate experiments in hexameter yet made by an English poet, and that, too, by an English poet entirely ignorant of the classic models. The grammarian, Noble Butler, once congratulated Mr. Heady on this fact, on the ground that a knowledge of Homeric and Virgilian hexameter could not but impede an English poet. Whether fortunate or unfortunate in this respect, Mr. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Ingleside Rhaims by : Jeremiah Eames Rankin
Download or read book Ingleside Rhaims written by Jeremiah Eames Rankin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ingleside Rhaims: Verses in the Dialect of Burns Some of the pieces here published are more prop erly studies, or imitations, than poems. But I have remembered that so great a master of his art as Burns himself, was indebted to other poets for the suggestion of such productions as even his in imitable Cotter's Saturday Night. Not to speak of The Holy Fair Whatever else, however, these poems may want. I hope they will not be re garded as deficient in purity, simplicity, and truth fulness, and that some of them may be found to possess even genuine poetic grace. My aim in the use of the Scotch dialect has been less to follow its peculiar idioms, which would have made me unintelligible to the mass of Eng lish readers, than to secure from it qualities of beauty, for which, I think, it will always remain unequalled. In a period when the tendency is away from the daily home-life, which is the se curity of the individual and the hope of 'the nation, I have tried to depict some of its gentle attractions; thankful if I may thus express my gratitude to God for the home-life of my childhood, as well as that of my maturer years and possibly may awaken kindred emotions in the bosom of others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs in the Night During the earlier years of his ministry he contributed to the religious press many prose articles and not a few poems. In his later years his thoughts appear to have been less frequently crystallized into poetic form, but what he wrote was exquisite in sentiment and diction, while some of it is worthy to rank with the productions of the masters of the art. The writing of verse was only incidental in his busy life, a sort of pastime, as the many bits of only a few lines hastily penned found here and there among his papers plainly show. But what he wrote has caused his friends to regret that he did not write more. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
