Book excerpt: In this paper we empirically investigate to what extent three competing asset pricing models price an individual firm's stock differently in an internationally integrated world: (i) the multifactor ICAPM of Solnik-Sercu including both the global market portfolio and exchange rate risk premiums, (ii) the single factor ICAPM with only the global market portfolio, and (iii) the single factor domestic CAPM. We generalize the pricing error expressions of Stulz (1995b) for the domestic CAPM against the single factor ICAPM to the multifactor model with exchange rate factors included. Furthermore, we derive formal statistical tests for the existence of a pricing error of the domestic CAPM versus both the single factor ICAPM and the multifactor ICAPM. We test for the significance of these pricing errors in a sample of 2,483 firms from 10 industrialized countries using monthly data from 1980 to 1995. We find that the single factor ICAPM without exchange rate factors induces mispricing for more than 60% of all firms. The domestic CAPM leads to a substantial and statistically significant pricing error for approximately 7% of all firms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a panel data set for international corporate bonds and capital account restrictions in advanced and emerging economies, we show that restrictions on capital inflows produce a substantial and economically meaningful increase in corporate bond spreads. A number of heterogeneities suggest that the effect of capital controls on inflows is particularly strong for more financially constrained firms, establishing a novel channel through which capital controls affect economic outcomes. By contrast, we do not find a robust significant effect of restrictions on outflows.

Book excerpt: Fachbuch aus dem Jahr 2013 im Fachbereich BWL - Investition und Finanzierung, , Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: All the above decisions are with the view to achieving a set of given corporate objectives. We need international financial management because we are now turning in a highly globalize and integrated world. Continued liberalization of international trade is certain to further internationalize consumption patterns around the world. Like consumption, production of goods and services has become highly globalize. To a large extent, this has happened as a result of multinational corporations (MNCs) .... Efforts to source inputs and locate production anywhere in the world where costs are lower and profits are higher. Recently, financial markets have also become highly integrated. This development allows investors to diversify their portfolios internationally. In the words of a wall street journal article, “Over the past decade, its investors have framed buckets of money into overseas markets, in the form of mutual funds. At the same time, Japanese investors are investing heavily in U.S and other foreign financial markets an effort to recycle enormous trade surpluses. In addition, many major corporations of the world, such as IBM, Sony, etc, have the shares cross-listed on foreign stock exchange, thereby rendering their shares internationally tradable and gaining access to foreign capital as well.

Book Synopsis International Capital Flows by : Martin Feldstein
Download or read book International Capital Flows written by Martin Feldstein and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent changes in technology, along with the opening up of many regions previously closed to investment, have led to explosive growth in the international movement of capital. Flows from foreign direct investment and debt and equity financing can bring countries substantial gains by augmenting local savings and by improving technology and incentives. Investing companies acquire market access, lower cost inputs, and opportunities for profitable introductions of production methods in the countries where they invest. But, as was underscored recently by the economic and financial crises in several Asian countries, capital flows can also bring risks. Although there is no simple explanation of the currency crisis in Asia, it is clear that fixed exchange rates and chronic deficits increased the likelihood of a breakdown. Similarly, during the 1970s, the United States and other industrial countries loaned OPEC surpluses to borrowers in Latin America. But when the U.S. Federal Reserve raised interest rates to control soaring inflation, the result was a widespread debt moratorium in Latin America as many countries throughout the region struggled to pay the high interest on their foreign loans. International Capital Flows contains recent work by eminent scholars and practitioners on the experience of capital flows to Latin America, Asia, and eastern Europe. These papers discuss the role of banks, equity markets, and foreign direct investment in international capital flows, and the risks that investors and others face with these transactions. By focusing on capital flows' productivity and determinants, and the policy issues they raise, this collection is a valuable resource for economists, policymakers, and financial market participants.
