Book Synopsis The Dunning School by : John David Smith
Download or read book The Dunning School written by John David Smith and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2013-11-15 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the late nineteenth century until World War I, a group of Columbia University students gathered under the mentorship of the renowned historian William Archibald Dunning (1857--1922). Known as the Dunning School, these students wrote the first generation of state studies on the Reconstruction -- volumes that generally sympathized with white southerners, interpreted radical Reconstruction as a mean-spirited usurpation of federal power, and cast the Republican Party as a coalition of carpetbaggers, freedmen, scalawags, and former Unionists. Edited by the award-winning historian John David Smith and J. Vincent Lowery, The Dunning School focuses on this controversial group of historians and its scholarly output. Despite their methodological limitations and racial bias, the Dunning historians' writings prefigured the sources and questions that later historians of the Reconstruction would utilize and address. Many of their pioneering dissertations remain important to ongoing debates on the broad meaning of the Civil War and Reconstruction and the evolution of American historical scholarship. This groundbreaking collection of original essays offers a fair and critical assessment of the Dunning School that focuses on the group's purpose, the strengths and weaknesses of its constituents, and its legacy. Squaring the past with the present, this important book also explores the evolution of historical interpretations over time and illuminates the ways in which contemporary political, racial, and social questions shape historical analyses.

Book Synopsis The Counterrevolution of Slavery by : Manisha Sinha
Download or read book The Counterrevolution of Slavery written by Manisha Sinha and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2003-06-19 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this comprehensive analysis of politics and ideology in antebellum South Carolina, Manisha Sinha offers a provocative new look at the roots of southern separatism and the causes of the Civil War. Challenging works that portray secession as a fight for white liberty, she argues instead that it was a conservative, antidemocratic movement to protect and perpetuate racial slavery. Sinha discusses some of the major sectional crises of the antebellum era--including nullification, the conflict over the expansion of slavery into western territories, and secession--and offers an important reevaluation of the movement to reopen the African slave trade in the 1850s. In the process she reveals the central role played by South Carolina planter politicians in developing proslavery ideology and the use of states' rights and constitutional theory for the defense of slavery. Sinha's work underscores the necessity of integrating the history of slavery with the traditional narrative of southern politics. Only by taking into account the political importance of slavery, she insists, can we arrive at a complete understanding of southern politics and the enormity of the issues confronting both northerners and southerners on the eve of the Civil War.

Book excerpt: The idea came early for a book honoring Professor Hamilton. Work began in earnest after the Kentucky Historical Society gave final publication assurances in November 1979. The editors had already contacted the dozen and a half sudents whose dissertations had been directed by Dr, Hamilton and learned which ones could contribute an essay to this work. Many more wanted to remember their mentor through an article than could, because of other commitments. Virtually all--and many other students from other levels of graduate and undergraduate work--expressed their support for such a project.

Polk, the second of three projected volumes, covers the most important years of Polk's political career-from a twice-defeated gubernatorial candidate in Tennessee to dark-horse candidate for the presidency and one of the most successful first eighteen months of any American president. The months of Polk’s administration covered here contain the bulk of his expansionist program-the annexation of Texas, the settlement of the Oregon boundary with Great Britain, and the war with Mexico that led to the acquisition of California and New Mexico. This period also covers the first session of the 29th Congress, which produced under Polk’s guidance the most important domestic legislation of any Congress of the century.
