Since, based on the findings of this study, it is concluded that class attendance has significant impact over academic performance so that it is recommended that compulsory class attendance and scholarship for full attendance are needed to be effectively implemented. This important study has been conducted in many other developed, developing and underdeveloped countries so that it becomes crucial to identify the effect of class attendance on the academic performance of students in Bangladesh.

The study group was ninety- two students of a seventh grade class in an urban school district. A study was conducted to analyze if there is a direct relationship between a student's attendance and achievement on standardized tests. Individual attendance percentages and test scores from the 2014 MAP Communication Arts and Mathematics were collected for each student for the 2012-2013 academic year. Using A Statistic Package (ASP), data was entered into the system to test the correlation between student attendance and student achievement. The analysis resulted in a significant, positive relationship between student attendance and student achievement in the MAP Mathematics test. However, the analysis depicted no significant relationship between student attendance and student achievement in the MAP Communication Arts test. Based on the results, schools should increase the communication with parents about the importance of attendance and student achievement in education.

Book excerpt: There is a problem in large, suburban high schools that relates to reduced degrees of student success. This problem occurred due to poor student attendance which led to low academic achievement, high rates of student discipline, and decreased graduation rates. This problem also led to poor scores on state benchmark tests that can negatively impact district accreditation and cause a loss of state and federal funding. This study addressed the association between student attendance to three specific indicators of students' success. A quantitative correlational methodology was used to explain the degree of association between the students' attendance and the three outcome variables of academic achievement measured by grade point average (GPA), student discipline as measured by the number of office referrals, and graduation rates at a large, suburban hgih school in the Midwest. Archived data from a single school year are used in the research. As student attendance rates increased, the mean grade point average increased and mean discipline referral rates decreased. The results showed the impact in graduation rate was not significant. The results of this study have corroborated the previous research and literature on the topic of attendance on student success. The research found a significant correlation between attendance and student success. The data and conclusions can be used to advocate for programs and services and for the allocation of resources for educational programming; particularly programs that support increased student attendance, improved academic achievement, decreased discipline incidents, and enhanced rate of graduation.

As a result, enrollment into these online programs and courses has also increased. The United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA) estimated there was a total of 12.2 million enrollments in college-level credit-granting distance education courses in 2006-07. A study by the Department of Education (2011) found that from 2000 to 2008, the percentage of undergraduates enrolled in at least one distance education class expanded from 8% to 20%. A Survey of Online Learning by the Babson Survey Research Group (2011) revealed that the number of students taking at least one online course has now surpassed 6 million. Now nearly one-third of all students in higher education are taking at least one online course. With the recent increase in online education programs, many learning institutions are focused on student retention and graduation rates. This study sought to gather evidence from online distance education students that would lead to general conclusions about relationships between online attendance, participation, and student achievement variables using a quantitative research design. A simple random sample was drawn from the accessible population of students taking undergraduate online distance education courses at Wilmington University during the fall semester of 2012. The sampling frame included students registered in courses offered from every academic department at the university. The sample used in this study was 548 undergraduate online students from 34 online courses. This study identified a small effect size between volume of participation (R2 = .088) and student achievement in online learning. A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.
