Book excerpt: Selected specimens of ATJ-S graphite were nondestructively evaluated and tensile tested in gas-bearing test facilities. The nondestructive test methods used on billets, specimen blanks, and finished specimens were visual inspection, alcohol wipe, radiography, and radiographic enhancement techniques. Correlations were made between nondestructive test indications and fracture location and strength. Low density areas were found to be the predominant weakening defect in this graphite. Fractographic examination of the fractured specimens revealed flaws which could be correlated with those flaws detected nondestructively and predicted from Griffith's theory. (Author).

Book excerpt: The objective of the research was to utilize the nondestructive testing (NDT) information, correlations, and techniques developed during previous years for the formulation of an experimental approach for verifying the quantitative significance of nondestructive evaluation of graphite and high temperature ceramic materials intended for aerospace structures and systems. As a part of the program, nondestructive evaluation was carried out on a series of billets of hot pressed diboride compositions of zirconium and hafnium with various additions hot pressed. Two grades of graphite (ATJ and RVA) were investigated to determine the significance of typical defective conditions on the physical behavior of the material. Tensile specimens containing various types of flaws, as determined by nondestructive tests, were broken and the results correlated with the NDT findings. (Author).

The properties and behavior characteristics of graphite which are important to ablative applications were identified and correlated with the applicable NDT methods and techniques during the first year. Emphasis was directed in verification of the applicability of the various NDT techniques and correlation to characterize graphite in relation to service performance has been an item of major concern. Statistical analysis of these correlations has established the significance of the correlations for predicting the related material properties. An extensive analysis of the application of NDT flaw testing and properties evaluation in regard to quality and reliability is presented. A detailed discussion of infrared technique development activities for measuring thermal properties is also presented. The influence of attenuation and the related effects of frequency distortion on velocity measurements is evaluated and described.

Book excerpt: A program to explore the behavior of ATJ-S graphite under multiaxial stress states is described. The program includes biaxial tests, off-axis uniaxial tests, and the development of a triaxial test capability. The first phase of the program is to conduct fracture tests on specimens of ATJ-S graphite under biaxial stress states at room temperature and 2000F at low strain rates. The biaxial tests consist of simultaneous axial loading and internal pressurization of hollow cylindrical specimens. The biaxial stress-states investigated include combinations of across-grain tension with with-grain tension, and across-grain compression with with-grain tension. The second phase is to conduct uniaxial tensile and compressive tests on ATJ-S specimens oriented at 0 degrees, 45 degrees, 70 degrees and 90 degrees to the across-grain axis of the material.
