Book excerpt: Division I female soccer athletes have been documented to succumb to the greatest amount of lower extremity injuries, predominately ACL injuries. The risk for a lower extremity injury becomes greater when alterations to functional biomechanics are present. Specifically, the hip abductor strength has a crucial role in maintaining pelvic alignment. The purpose of this study was to determine if the hip abductor strength of a female athlete alters biomechanics during functional performance. Thirty-two Division I female soccer athletes participated in this study (20+/-2yrs, 64.5+/-16.5kg, 166+/-14cm). Descriptive and anthropological statistics were recorded prior to participation. The athletes' isometric hip abductor strength was obtained through a side-lying protocol immediately followed by a Tuck Jump Assessment. The athletes were tested at three different points during the season (preseason, midseason, and postseason). A repeated measures ANOVA was performed for both the change in the functional performance and hip abductor strength over the season with a Pearson correlation used to analyze the relationship between functional performance and hip abductor strength. The results found significance in the change of strength over the season (Preseason-Midseason p=.000, Midseason-Postseason p=.000, Preseason-Postseason p=.001 ), no significance in the change of functional performance (Preseason-Midseason p=1.000, Midseason-Postseason p=.110, Preseason-Postseason p=.522 ), and a weak negative relationship between hip abductor strength and functional performance (Preseason-Midseason r=-.134, Midseason-Postseason r=-.306, Preseason-Postseason r=-.021). The study concluded hip abductor strength changes over the course of the season with a weak relationship between hip abductor strength and function performance.

Therefore, there is an increasing need to expand research to also include female soccer athletes and the effects of various forms of training. Purpose: To determine whether a six-week interval-training improves aerobic and anaerobic performance variables of various soccer related skills in female soccer athletes. Methods: Ten female college soccer athletes (20.18 " 0.965 years) participated in a six-week interval training program including on-ball and off-ball training. The first three weeks consisted of off-ball training. The second three weeks consisted of on-ball training, including small-sided games. Results: Following the intervention, the participants showed a 6% decrease in body fat percentage, 12% decrease in resting heart rate, 21% increase in VO2max, 5% increase in vertical jump, and 11% decrease in fatigue time during Bangsbo's Soccer Sprint Test. Conclusion: The present data suggest that the six-week interval training intervention showed improvement in body composition, aerobic, and anaerobic performance measures, all closely related to soccer performance.

Book excerpt: Introduction: Following the onset of maturation, female athletes have a significantly higher risk for anterior cruciate ligament injury when compared with male athletes. It is therefore important to evaluate this increased risk in this population and some possible preventative measures. Objective: To examine the effect of a neuromuscular exercise training (NME) program on hip strength and core stability in healthy adolescent females. Study Design: Randomized Clinical Trial which employed a repeated measures design. Participants: Healthy adolescent females aged 12-18 years old. Intervention: A 5-week progressive perturbation NME program was administered according to previously described and validated methodologies. The supervised program was administered 2x/week for 5 weeks. The program consisted of a series of destabilizing perturbations that were applied to the unstable surfaces with the participant in a unilateral stance. Outcome Measurements: Hip external rotation (ER) and hip abduction strength were evaluated using held-hand dynamometry. A dynamic seated stability test was used to evaluate core stability. Vertical jump test using the Vertex was used to evaluate lower extremity functional power and performance. Results: 40 healthy adolescent females (age 13.5 ± 0.2 years, height 165.3 ± 7.5 cm, weight 70.0 ± 25.3 kg, BMI 25.2 ± 6.6 kg/m2) were recruited. Two-way ANOVAs compared hip ER and abduction strength, core stability, and vertical jump pre- and post- NME training between the control and NME groups. Independent samples t-tests demonstrated that the percentage change in hip abduction strength and core stability was different between the control and NME group, with the NME group showing more improvement at follow-up. There was no significant relationship noted between strength scores and core stability or vertical jump performance. Conclusions: Overall, the results suggest the possibility of some impact as a result of the NME program, but more research is still needed to clarify the results of this and other investigations which have examined the efficacy of NME training programs in specific at-risk populations such as physically active adolescent females.

Study 1 evaluates the effectiveness of the season-long intervention utilizing quantitative data to compare treatment and control groups. Study 2 describes how and why the intervention was implemented, utilizing quantitative and qualitative data from the treatment group to identify effect "process" variables. Repeated measures multivariate analysis of variance results from Study 1 revealed that the MST intervention significantly increased sport enjoyment, key mental training skills, and athletic performance both, in practice and competition, compared to the control group. Results from Study 2 demonstrated through case study, cross-case analyses and individual engagement scores how a MST program can enhance the quantity and quality of sport sources of enjoyment (SOE), the primary SOE present in collegiate soccer, autonomy-supportive SOE, the role of athletic engagement and how different components become more prominent at different points of the intervention, and sport enjoyment's impact on athletic performance. The discussion focuses on the role of the working implementation model in intervention effectiveness.

Book excerpt: Abstract: PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between strength, functional test outcomes, and perception of readiness and injury rates and severity among intercollegiate gymnasts. SUBJECTS: Nineteen members (6 male, 13 female) of the Springfield College gymnastics teams participated in the study. The male subjects trained for an average of 10.2 + 3.6 months per year and competed 3.8 + 2.1 months per year while the female subjects trained an average of 11.5 2 1.4 months per year and competed 4.4 + 2.3 months per year. METHODS: All subjects were tested before the start of the competitive season, and prior to the occurrence of injury to obtain baseline data. A questionnaire was utilized to collect data on variables related to demographics, history of gymnastics activity, previous injuries, and current perception of readiness to compete. Subjects completed an isokinetic test of quadriceps and hamstring strength at three speeds, and three functional tests: A cocontraction test, a vertical leap test, and a single leg hop for time test. One female subject sustained an injury that resulted in the inability to participate for 3 days and as a result met the operational definition of injury. This subject was re-tested 24 hours after clearance by an athletic trainer. STATISTICAL ANALYSES: Descriptive statistics were used to obtain a demographic profile, injury history profile, and sports participation profile. Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient was used to investigate relationships between variables. Linear multiple regression analyses and the coefficients of determination were used to explain variance in isokinetic and functional test outcomes. Independent t-tests were used to identify significant differences between males and females with respect to isokinetic strength or functional test outcomes. Wilcoxon signed ranks tests were used to compare the performances of the six subjects that participated in both the first and second years of this study. RESULTS: Significant differences were found between males and females in the isokinetic tests, and all three functional tests. Strong significant positive relationships were found between the three isokinetic strength speeds. The vertical jump test showed a high positive correlation with all three isokinetic testing speeds. The cocontraction test demonstrated a significant negative correlation with all three isokinetic testing speeds. The 6- meter single leg hop test showed a significant negative correlation with the isokinetic test at 60o/sec. The Wicoxon signed ranks test showed the only significant differences in the performance of the six subjects participating in both years of the study was found in the vertical jump and cocontraction tests. The coefficients of determination showed that each functional test can explain between 22% and 49% of the variance in the isokinetic strength test. CONCLUSIONS: The combination of the three functional tests (vertical jump, 6-meter single leg hop, and cocontraction) may be an adequate substitution for isokinetic strength testing as a measure of rehabilitation status. Future research is needed to establish normative values for the functional tests in different populations as well as determining additional variables that explain the remaining variance in the isokinetic strength testing.
