Book excerpt: "Matthew, who had at first preached to the Hebrews, when he was about to go to other peoples, committed his Gospel to writing in his native tongue, and thus compensated those whom he was obliged to leave for the loss of his presence." - Eusebius Church History Book III, 24:6 "Matthew, also called Levi, apostle and aforetimes publican, composed a gospel of Christ at first published in Judea in Hebrew for the sake of those of the circumcision who believed, but this was afterwards translated into Greek, though by what author is uncertain." Jerome,Illustrious Men Chapter 3. The primary source for Matthew should be a Hebrew text rather than the typical Greek text. If you don’t find the Hebrew primary source compelling, that’s fine. Read it from the Greek. Both teach the same Christ. If you like the idea of the Hebrew text and want to see how a traditional translation would have been different, you can compare the footnotes in your favorite translation to this translation to get a sense of whether or not your favorite translators would have dealt with the text differently given this Hebrew source instead of the Greek.

Book excerpt: My goal in this book is to provide a single English edition of God's Word according to the sources that prayer and study has convinced me is the best primary source and a brief overview of the reasons that led me to these conclusions. The Corrected King James gives me a standardized English text to read and study from as I further my study in the original languages. The Corrected King James Version is intended to be a minimal project, with the aim of speculating what the King James Translators would have done with the source text I prefer rather than the source text that they actually used.As our understanding of the science of textual criticism has increased, we have gained the tools to disprove their claim. I think the best way to find the Greek New Testament has been in front of us the whole time. The Byzantine Greek Majority Text is the best available primary source for New Testament translations. The Byzantine Greek Majority Text best reflects the thoughts of the apostles that authored it, and by extension, it is also a better reflection of God's own thoughts. But I believe that the primary source for Matthew should be a Hebrew text rather than the typical Greek text, and my working theory for the development of Paul's letters runs as follows: Paul originally wrote his letters, some in Greek, some in Aramaic. The letters were then sent to their various destinations and translated to whatever people needed. After Paul died, Timothy and Titus got together to collect his letters and edit them. They made several decisions about which letters to choose. I believe that they edited the available texts, with a greater concern to preserve the most important aspects of Paul's theology. These edited letters were then arranged according to length, then combined into a single book. This book became the standard edition of Paul's collected works.I also believe that God spoke to us in I and II Maccabees, Tobit, Judith, Wisdom, Sirach, Baruch, and Theodotion's additions to Daniel.

Book excerpt: Corrected King James VersionComplete New TestamentThere is a legend that Thomas Jefferson used to take a knife and cut out verses of the Bible that he didn't like. The results of his labor are known through the Smithsonian Museum. He doubted the veracity of the biblical authors, even though he believed Christ to be a great moral teacher. Jefferson was not the only one to cut things out of his Bible that caused him problems. Martin Luther was famous for wanting to relocate the epistle of James to an appendix. He did manage to find grounded logic by which the could remove the books of the Maccabees from his Old Testament when they were invoked against his problems with indulgences. Most of protestantism has followed him in maintaining Bibles with an Old Testament handed over strictly by Jewish scribes. While I admire Jefferson's and Luther's sincerity, I disagree with their premise. Jefferson and Luther decided what God must have said, then shaped their canon to match. I would rather determine what the canon is and use that to determine what God must have said.I believe that The Holy Spirit has aided and guided the process of biblical development. I'm uncomfortable with some images of inspiration in the popular sphere. The best description I've heard for how inspiration works comes from Plato's dialog Ion. In that, Plato (through the caricature of Socrates) explains that inspiration is like a magnet, and that once it touches a ring of iron, the ring becomes magnetic as well. I believe that God, through the course of living events, touches some of us. When some, particularly the Apostles and Prophets, are in their closest communication with God, their thoughts become divine. When those thoughts come out on ink and paper, that ink and paper becomes (in a sense) embedded with divine thoughts. To borrow an analogy from another great thinker, it is like a map of a great idea. The map is not the ocean. It can't get me wet. I can't sail my boat on it. But if I want to know the safest and best places to get wet or the most efficient way to sail my boat, the map is a better guide than a swimming pool.I really understand where Jefferson and Luther were coming from. I really like bacon with my breakfast, and there was a point in my life that I really had to take some time and put the study in on that issue. After all, the Bible does say, "And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be clovenfooted, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you." (Leviticus 11:7) and unlike Jefferson, I was unwilling to just cut that verse out because it was inconvenient. I wanted to know what God actually said, not what I wanted God to have said.I hope this dispels the fear that some could have regarding my project. My aim is more in line with Erasmus than Jefferson. However poorly he got started, Erasmus set out to understand what the Bible said in the original language. So if I still end up having texts that are difficult for me and not having the clarity of text I might hope for, what is the point of creating a Corrected King James Bible? The point is to get just a little bit closer to the magnet of Christ and the Prophets and the Apostles. The point is the bring my ear just a few inches closer to God's lips so I can hear him that much more clearly. I think that the King James translators got it wrong in 1 John 5:7-8. I think that they put words in the Bible that were never supposed to be there, no matter how convenient they are for me. So I'm taking those words out so that I can more clearly hear the words that God has placed in the Bible. My goal is to provide a single translation of God's Word according to the sources that prayer and study has convinced me is the best primary source. Ultimately, I would like to translate all of these myself as well, but in the meantime The Corrected King James gives me a standardized English text to read and study from.

Book excerpt: The King James Version has shaped the church, our worship, and our mother tongue for over 400 years. But what should we do with it today? The KJV beautifully rendered the Scriptures into the language of turn-of-the-seventeenth-century England. Even today the King James is the most widely read Bible in the United States. The rich cadence of its Elizabethan English is recognized even by non-Christians. But English has changed a great deal over the last 400 years—and in subtle ways that very few modern readers will recognize. In Authorized Mark L. Ward, Jr. shows what exclusive readers of the KJV are missing as they read God's word.#In their introduction to the King James Bible, the translators tell us that Christians must "heare CHRIST speaking unto them in their mother tongue." In Authorized Mark Ward builds a case for the KJV translators' view that English Bible translations should be readable by what they called "the very vulgar"—and what we would call "the man on the street."

Book excerpt: Mention the "King James Version" or "KJV" to most people these days, and you are most likely to elicit groans, as people envision thick, dusty Bibles, with two columns of dense text, with verses interrupting forever-long sentences. And then they remember the "thee's" and "thou's" and the "est's" and "eth's". And their next thought is, "No thank you." However, by doing that, many people do not realize just what they are missing! The King James Version of the Bible holds a unique place in the history of the English speaking world. It was the one common bond across borders and continents for centuries. It has had an enormous influence on our vocabulary, and is the source of many idioms that people take for granted. Furthermore, the KJV is a classic of English literature. While its language may be a bit archaic, it is still read and enjoyed by people of all walks of life and of all ages and backgrounds even today. What if you could read the KJV without all the extra additions, like verse numbers, and two-column, dense text, and what if you could read it, just like you did a normal book? And what if it were in the form and size of a normal book? What if you actually found yourself enjoying reading the KJV Bible-and truly enjoying it? Here are the main features of this edition: Modern Typeface No Verse and Chapter numbers Subtitles added to help find your place Easy-on-the-eyes page layout Justified left text Ample white space Comfortable, handheld size (trade paperback) This Gospel according to Matthew is the second volume in a multi-year project that will include, in the end, all 66 books of the KJV Bible, in 31 volumes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mark is the shortest of the gospels, even though in parallel stories, Mark often gives the most details of the Synoptic Gospels. For example, Mark and Luke include the detail that the paralytic was lowered from the roof, and Mark and Matthew include the reasons that John was arrested in more detail than Luke. Mark gets a reputation for being the most hurried and spectacular gospel. I think this honor should go to Matthew. In sharp contrast, I think Mark is actually more grounded. For example, in the Gospel of Matthew, the cursed fig tree withers immediately, whereas in Mark the same curse takes a few days to play out. Matthew brings the paralytic to Jesus's feet, but Mark includes the details that he was lowered through the roof. Only Mark includes the second rooster crow before Peter's denial. Mark spells out all the stories, stretching out every event and detail. Instead of telling the Gospel as an epic like Matthew, Mark is telling it with realism. He is famous for his more abundant use of the word "immediately" to string his stories together, but the actual accounts themselves are very grounded and have a very real-life feel to them. When reading Mark, one is tempted to dust oneself off from the Palestinian dust you feel you've been walking through.I think that the Gospel of Mark connects with modern readers more because our style of writing in the Twenty-First Century has finally caught up with Mark. Now we read books as though we are watching television. If a detail isn't supplied by the text, we fill it in. When we imagine Jesus cursing the fig tree, we either have an image of him sitting or standing. Somewhere deep inside our mind is a little movie director directing the action narrated by the text we read. This may or may not have been true in previous generations. Certainly, when we read books like Jonah and The Gospel of Matthew, the storytelling tactic is different. Instead of giving us details that help us to paint a more accurate view of the story, they build events so that we can have a clearer understanding of the consequences of the story. Matthew is far less concerned to give us the time-table of the fig tree that was cursed, and more concerned that we understand that the fig tree that was cursed withered. Mark is concerned that we have an accurate count of the rooster crows, all three other gospel writers only care that we recognize Peter's failure, with the arithmetic of that failure being left ambiguous.Even though the first few centuries thought Mark was redundant, our most recent generations have started to connect with Mark in a way we haven't connected with Matthew or Luke. The reason we connect with Mark so well is that Mark is a spiritual blogger. Mark tells us all the things we never knew we want to know about the Gospel. Mark tells the story in a more personal way. Mark is the student of Peter, and he's putting down every day's lesson as quickly as he can. Mark is most famous for the "Messianic Secret," where Jesus is insisting that no one identify him as the Messiah but he is recognized by the demons he's confronting. In Mark, the character of Jesus jumps off the page at you. If you want to get to know Jesus as a friend, Mark is the Gospel for you. In Mark, we get quotes from Jesus in his mother tongue, Aramaic. Even though Mark wrote his Gospel in Greek, he was translating for Peter. One can imagine Peter telling his stories in broken Greek while Mark frantically translated into Latin, and then periodically Peter slipping into Aramaic just as the story is getting interesting. Mark, a Jew of the diaspora, struggles to catch up, shouting out the Aramaic and then translating it. The crowd is enthralled, not sure if this is some sort of magic incantation or the name of some foreign dignitary, only to discover that these are the simple and plain words that Christ used in his homeland among his own people.
