Book excerpt: A revolutionary fitness book by Chris Robinson that will change your body and your life Personal trainer Chris Robinson has helped celebrities, athletes, top executives, and ordinary people from coast to coast tone their muscles and melt away pounds in a matter of weeks with a simple workout philosophy: train from your core. To most, the core is synonymous with washboard abs, but it also encompasses twenty-nine muscles in and around your trunk, pelvis, hips, buttocks, and lower back. A strong core gives you the stability and mobility you need for better posture and balance, reduced back pain, and a more effective overall workout. In The Core Connection, Chris invites a team of five brave men and women with busy, stressful lives to follow his life-changing regimen for six weeks. The result -- a combined total weight loss of 78 pounds! Chris's unique program integrates the important principles of Pilates -- emphasis on core strength, muscle control, breathing, and correct posture -- into standard cardio and weight-bearing exercises for a total body workout. By learning to engage all the muscles in your core, you also increase your calorie burn and reduce your risk of injury. The Core Connection is a safe, effective, portable workout that is perfect for people of all ages and fitness levels. Chris's explicit, easy-to-understand instructions are accompanied by clear illustrations that will help you check your form as he focuses on the specific aspects of alignment, muscle control, and breath that are essential for achieving the maximum benefit from each exercise. He offers a plan for simple, total body workouts that include mat work to help you find and feel your core muscles, cardio, and strength training -- with the option of using weight machines or your own body weight. He also shares important tips for improving your diet without completely giving up the foods you love. The Core Connection is more than just a workout plan. It's a totally new approach to your life. Your body is only as strong as its core. With Chris Robinson's help, you can look and feel better than ever.

Book excerpt: "Core Connections: Cairo Belly Dance in the Revolution's Aftermath investigates local, intra-Middle Eastern, and global circulations of belly dance centered within Cairo, Egypt, in the tumultuous aftermath of the Jan. 25th, 2011 revolution. This multi-sited ethnography takes audiences on a taxi ride that viscerally moves through contemporary city-circuitries of dance venues and stories from the Nile cruising tourist boats and decadent five-star hotels to smoky late-night discos and Pyramid Street cabarets. While mapping the multiple maneuverings of Cairene dancers and non-dancers alike, this book centralizes Cairene dancers embodied political insight while fleshing out nuanced portraits of their lives and stories amidst ongoing political precarity. In addition to interweaving Dance and Middle Eastern Gender Studies, this book innovatively 'does' and writes ethnography. This book's ethnographic approach embodies the dance itself via attending to the dual meanings of moving; centralizing mobility and movement as sites of power and knowledge, but also in researching and writing in ways that move emotionally, stirring up poignant affect that leads to physical reaction, change, and connection. In other words, this ethnography aims to center the same aesthetics and values of Cairo belly dancing, to 'move' with greater feeling to cultivate richer core connections within ourselves, between one another, and within our city-spaces. In doing so, this book stakes a claim for listening to the subtleties of otherwise marginalized bodily interaction, exchange, and wisdom as rippling with potential for stepping into more revolutionary realities and relationships. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fascinating patient stories and dynamic exercises help you connect to healing emotions, ease anxiety and depression, and discover your authentic self. Sara suffered a debilitating fear of asserting herself. Spencer experienced crippling social anxiety. Bonnie was shut down, disconnected from her feelings. These patients all came to psychotherapist Hilary Jacobs Hendel seeking treatment for depression, but in fact none of them were chemically depressed. Rather, Jacobs Hendel found that they’d all experienced traumas in their youth that caused them to put up emotional defenses that masqueraded as symptoms of depression. Jacobs Hendel led these patients and others toward lives newly capable of joy and fulfillment through an empathic and effective therapeutic approach that draws on the latest science about the healing power of our emotions. Whereas conventional therapy encourages patients to talk through past events that may trigger anxiety and depression, accelerated experiential dynamic psychotherapy (AEDP), the method practiced by Jacobs Hendel and pioneered by Diana Fosha, PhD, teaches us to identify the defenses and inhibitory emotions (shame, guilt, and anxiety) that block core emotions (anger, sadness, fear, disgust, joy, excitement, and sexual excitement). Fully experiencing core emotions allows us to enter an openhearted state where we are calm, curious, connected, compassionate, confident, courageous, and clear. In It’s Not Always Depression, Jacobs Hendel shares a unique and pragmatic tool called the Change Triangle—a guide to carry you from a place of disconnection back to your true self. In these pages, she teaches lay readers and helping professionals alike • why all emotions—even the most painful—have value. • how to identify emotions and the defenses we put up against them. • how to get to the root of anxiety—the most common mental illness of our time. • how to have compassion for the child you were and the adult you are. Jacobs Hendel provides navigational tools, body and thought exercises, candid personal anecdotes, and profound insights gleaned from her patients’ remarkable breakthroughs. She shows us how to work the Change Triangle in our everyday lives and chart a deeply personal, powerful, and hopeful course to psychological well-being and emotional engagement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International migration presents the human face of globalization, with consequences that make headlines throughout the world. The Cross-Border Connection addresses a paradox at the core of this phenomenon: emigrants departing one society become immigrants in another, tying those two societies together in a variety of ways. In nontechnical language, Roger Waldinger explains how interconnections between place of origin and destination are built and maintained and why they eventually fall apart. “When are immigrants ‘us’? When are they ‘them’? Waldinger implores readers to reframe the debate from a before-after dichotomy to a new transnational approach, revealing migrants to be here, there, and in-between at all stages of their migration tenure...The book’s real strength is in the elegance of the author’s argument, supported by evidence that transnationalism itself is not static but an ongoing dialectic.” —R. A. Harper, Choice “The Cross-Border Connection is to be commended for putting substance into the black box of transnationalism, offering scholars a dynamic model to account for the ebb and flow of transnationalism in the real world and yielding testable propositions about the circumstances under which cross-border connections can be expected to expand or contract.” —Douglas S. Massey, American Journal of Sociology

In this ground-breaking book, a wide range of crimes are examined in terms of the social psychological processes that influence the participants and their relationships with each other. Crimes as diverse as fraud and hostage taking are examined from a range of social science perspectives, including broad anthropological perspectives on differences in the structure of criminal cultures as well as the detailed consideration of the roles offenders play in groups and teams of criminals. This book opens up a new area of empirical study of relevance to students of crime as well as law enforcement officers. It will also be of value and interest to all those social scientists who wish to understand how their disciplines can contribute more effectively to the investigation of crime.

Book excerpt: This book contains selected papers from the symposium "Operations Research 2010" which was held from September 1-3, 2010 at the "Universität der Bundeswehr München", Germany. The international conference, which also serves as the annual meeting of the German Operations Research Society (GOR), attracted more than 600 participants from more than thirty countries. The general theme "Mastering Complexity" focusses on a natural component of the globalization process. Financial markets, traffic systems, network topologies and, last but not least, energy resource management, all contain complex behaviour and economic interdependencies which necessitate a scientific solution. Operations Research is one of the key instruments to model, simulate and analyze such systems. In the process of developing optimal solutions, suitable heuristics and efficient procedures are some of the challenges which are discussed in this volume.

The author shows how smartphones communicate via three separate systems, namely 5G NR, Wi-Fi 6, and Bluetooth Low Energy 5. He explains how 5G NR allows mobile voice and high-speed data communication, how Wi-Fi allows smartphone attachment to the Internet independent of 5G NR, and how Bluetooth allows smartphone attachment to speakers, in-car entertainment systems, smart watches, etc. This text explains the key basic technologies employed and then addresses how each system operates. This book is of interest to anyone with a rudimentary scientific understanding who desires to know more at an intuitive level rather than rigorous one how smartphones achieve wireless communications.
