Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kentucky's rich archaeological heritage spans thousands of years, and the Commonwealth remains fertile ground for study of the people who inhabited the midcontinent before, during, and after European settlement. This long-awaited volume brings together the most recent research on Kentucky's prehistory and early history, presenting both an accurate descriptive and an authoritative interpretation of Kentucky's past. The book is arranged chronologically -- from the Ice Age to modern times, when issues of preservation and conservation have overtaken questions of identification and classification. For each time slice of Kentucky's past, the contributors describe typical communities and settlement patterns, major changes from previous cultural periods, the nature of the economy and subsistence, artifacts, the general health and characteristics of the people, and regional cultural differences. Sites discussed include the Green River shell mounds, the Central Kentucky Adena mounds and enclosures, Eastern Kentucky rockshelters, the important Wickliffe site at the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio rivers, Fort Ancient culture villages, and the fortified towns of the Mississippian period in Western Kentucky. The authors draw from a wealth of unpublished material and offer the detailed insights and perspectives of specialists who have focused much of their professional careers on the scientific investigation of Kentucky's prehistory. The book's many graphic elements -- maps, artifact drawings, photographs, and village plans -- combined with a straightforward and readable text, provide a format that will appeal to the general reader as well as to students and specialists in other fields who wish to learn more about Kentucky's archaeology.

Book excerpt: Contemporary figurative sculptors rarely support themselves, but in steps Dan Corbin, breaking all the rules on his way to becoming a successful studio artist. Corbin takes two decades to realize his art dream. He makes the usual sacrifices, travels the world, seeks out art education, finds and loses love. So why is the outcome of his narrative so different? Corbin’s enigmas are revealed in this humor-leveled portrait of a man full of energy, propelled by a distressed childhood, seeking a higher calling, and intent on full redemption. Raised in California, Corbin reinvents himself in a life filled with risk and adventure. An army stint in Germany began his thirst for travel, living in Spain, Santa Barbara, Hawaii, and Berkeley. This enables Corbin to learn more about himself and others, as he cobbles together an eclectic belief system based on mysticism, faith and science, and then attempts to develop an art style capable of expressing his new sense of self. Corbin’s long journey is sometimes hilarious and grueling. He searches inside and out and in every direction for the lost answers but ultimately finds the resolution in plain sight.

Book excerpt: Prehistoric Florida societies, particularly those of the peninsula, have been largely ignored or given only minor consideration in overviews of the Mississippian southeast (A.D. 1000-1600). This groundbreaking volume lifts the veil of uniformity frequently draped over these regions in the literature, providing the first comprehensive examination of Mississippi-period archaeology in the state. Featuring contributions from some of the most prominent researchers in the field, this collection describes and synthesizes the latest data from excavations throughout Florida. In doing so, it reveals a diverse and vibrant collection of cleared-field maize farmers, part-time gardeners, hunter-gatherers, and coastal and riverine fisher/shellfish collectors who formed a distinctive part of the Mississipian southeast.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once nearly forgotten, Tombstone, Arizona, is trapped in myth and legend. Walking its quiet streets, one finds it hard to separate truth from illusion and remember this was a real town, not some Hollywood fantasy. Tombstone’s rough and rowdy exploits were reported from San Francisco to New York. William B. Shillingberg rediscovers the real Tombstone in this historical tour-de-force. The rough mining town of boomers and investors, of hard men and women seeking their fortunes, comes to life with startling clarity. Tombstone, A.T.: A History of Early Mining, Milling, and Mayhem relates true tales of those who founded and built the town, including the infamous Earps and Clantons. Shillingberg details life in a pioneer mining town, from the discoverers of the mines, Edward and Albert Schieffelin and Richard Gird, to the amazing cast of characters in the most celebrated gunfight in western history—the shootout at the OK Corral, between Wyatt, Virgil, and Morgan Earp, Doc Holliday, and a gang led by Ike Clanton. And tales of John Ringo, Frank Leslie, and diarist George W. Parsons are filled with the famous and the notorious. Today Tombstone slumbers, a shadow of its faded glory, supported by clouded memories and tourist dollars. But the real story remains, and Tombstone, A.T. tells it.

Book excerpt: One of the most popular Hollywood child stars of the late 1910s, Virginia Lee Corbin was well known to fans worldwide. With her mother as her manager, Corbin retained her popularity as she grew older. She performed in vaudeville for a couple of years before continuing her film career. Corbin fit well into the flapper mold of the Jazz Age and appeared in many films throughout the 1920s. As she matured, her mother found it ever more difficult to control her. Corbin led a difficult life. After her mother's suicide attempt, she found that all the money she had earned was gone. Her marriage (at age 18) failed and she was eventually separated from her children. The flapper struggled to remain relevant in the sound era and was trying to make a comeback when she died at 31 in 1942.

Book excerpt: This important new reference work offers an outstanding collection of articles devoted to the discussion of "intracellular messengers". Extracellular stimuli ("first messengers") bind to receptors on the plasma membrane of cells to trigger changes in the concentration of intracellular messengers ("second messengers") which leads, in turn, to changes in cellular activity. However, the intracellular activities of so called "third messengers" may also be involved complicating the concept of a rigid sequence of events between receptor and response. The preference for the term "intracellular messengers", and, hence, the title of this volume, recognizes that a complex web of interactions between intercellular messengers determines the concentrations and ultimate effects of each.
