Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Convivio di Dante Alighieri is a philosophical essay composed in the years between 1304 and 1307 after Dante's political exile in Florence. Dante wrote in Italian and the book is a landmark in the use of Tuscan language for serious literature. He chose Italian rather than Latin because he wanted all people to be able to read and understand his ideas. The unfinished essay has four separate parts. In the first book, Dante metaphorically represents the book as a banquet of wisdom, where the poetry sections are the main courses and the prose sections are the bread. In Dante's conception, the guests of the banquet are wisdom-seekers who are too busy with politics to purse their studies. Since Dante was in political exile, he was also making a point about the self-absorbed politicians who fought him. In the second book, Dante explains that after his beloved Beatrice's death, he started studying philosophy and fell in love with the subject. For Dante, philosophy is personified by a woman and the love he feels for her. In the third book he carefully describes this woman and defines philosophy as a loving use of wisdom. Dante's primary argument is that philosophy suffers when it has ulterior motives. The philosophical seeker needs to love wisdom and seek it for its own sake. In the fourth book, Dante defines nobility, which he explains cannot truly be inherited. He says nobility can only be gained from God, by acting in accordance with principles and pursuing purity. He explains his political theories, which eventually are put forth in more detail in other texts. Dante wrote The Convivio as a defense of his reputation. He also wanted to show Italians that he had cultural value as a poet and philosopher. The philosophical and political ideas of The Convivio reappear in greater detail in later works, particularly in The Divine Comedy. The Convivio is an important work by one of the masters of world literature. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Dante Alighiere is considered one of the great Italian writers and poets of all time. A philosopher who lived in the thirteenth century, he is most well known for his seminal work La Comedia. While one of his lesser known works, Il Convito: The Banquet of Dante Alighieri remains an important piece of writing from one of the Middle Age's most prominent philosophers. Originally written in the early fourteenth century, this work was never fully completed by Dante. Dante wrote in Italian, the language of the common man, which was highly unusual for writers in the Middle Ages. His book was thus accessible to the masses, and as such was focused on many areas of interest to the commoner. The Banquet is divided into four books which mix poetry and prose. The book opens with Dante's explanation of the need for Il Convito and why he opted to write in the vernacular as opposed to Latin. Books two and three are about the loss of his love Beatrice, and his new love for Lady Philosophy. Book three consists of a lengthy poem praising philosophy, while book four, which makes up the majority of this work, is a discussion of true nobility, and includes the longest hymn to appear in all of Il Convito. The Banquet of Dante Alighieri is truly a wonderful read and the work of a master. Even in its translation to English, the power of Dante's ideas transcends the language used to convey them. This book provides a portrait of the man himself, and is an important contextual piece to Dante's entire body of writing. If one is looking for a companion piece to read alongside La Comedia, Il Convito is perhaps the most illuminating of all Dante's work. As a work of philosophy from one of the great thinkers of the Middle Ages, Il Convito: The Banquet of Dante Alighieri is of tremendous importance. This is a must read for anybody remotely interested in philosophy, and is thus highly recommended. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt: ...that her beauty is blamed, because it seems not such as it should seem, let her look upon this example. 140 Where be it known that the beauty of a soul is its ways, especially the virtues, which are sometimes made less beautiful and less pleasing by vanity or by pride, as we shall be able to see in the last treatise. And therefore I say that to escape this we are to look upon her; to wit under that aspect wherein she is an example of humility, that is in the part of her which is called moral philosophy. And I add In the that by gazing upon her, I mean 150 wisdom, beginin that part, every vicious man will become JijjjkJJ upright and good. And therefore I say: It is she who humbleth each perverse one, that is, gently bends back whosoever hath been warped from the due order. Finally, in supreme praise of wisdom I say that she is mother of all origins whatever, saying that with her God began the universe, and specifically the movement of the heaven which generates 160 all things, and from which every movement takes its beginning and its starting, saying, --; --.-j.; 'Of her was he thinking who set the universe it1 motion,,"J'" that is to say, . that she existed in the divine thought, which is intellect itself, when he made the universe; whence it follows' that she made it; wherefore, in the passage in Proverbs, Solomon says, in the person of wisdom: f When God prepared the heavens I was there, when he walled the abysses with a fixed 170 law and with a fixed circuit, when he established the heaven above and suspended the fountains of water, when he fixed the limit for the sea and set a decree upon the waters that they might not pass their boundaries, when he laid down the foundations of the earth, I too was with him, ordering...

This unfinished work of Dante consists of four trattati, or "books" a prefatory one, plus three books that each include a canzone (long lyrical poem) and a prose allegorical interpretation or commentary of the poem that goes off in multiple thematic directions. The Convivio is a major stage of development for Dante, very different from the visionary world of the Vita nuova (although like the earlier work it too is a medium for the author's evolving sense of artistic vocation and philosophical-spiritual quest).

Book excerpt: "The Banquet (Il Convito)" by Dante Alighieri is an unfinished work which consists of four books, or, "tratatti": a prefatory one, plus three books that each include a canzone and a prose allegorical interpretation or commentary of the poem. The Convivio is a kind of vernacular encyclopedia of the knowledge of Dante's time; it touches on many areas of learning, not only philosophy but also politics, linguistics, science, astronomy, and history. The treatise begins with the prefatory book, or proem, which explains why a book like the Convivio is needed and why Dante is writing it in the vernacular instead of Latin. It is one of Dante's early defenses of the vernacular
