Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of papers that comprehensively describe the major areas of research on lipid metabolism of plants. State-of-the-art knowledge about research on fatty acid and glycerolipid biosynthesis, isoprenoid metabolism, membrane structure and organization, lipid oxidation and degradation, lipids as intracellular and extracellular messengers, lipids and environment, oil seeds and gene technology is reviewed. The different topics covered show that modern tools of plant cellular and molecular biology, as well as molecular genetics, have been recently used to characterize several key enzymes of plant lipid metabolism (in particular, desaturases, thioesterases, fatty acid synthetase) and to isolate corresponding cDNAs and genomic clones, allowing the use of genetic engineering methods to modify the composition of membranes or storage lipids. These findings open fascinating perspectives, both for establishing the roles of lipids in membrane function and intracellular signalling and for adapting the composition of seed oil to the industrial needs. This book will be a good reference source for research scientists, advanced students and industrialists wishing to follow the considerable progress made in recent years on plant lipid metabolism and to envision the new opportunities offered by genetic engineering for the development of novel oil seeds.

Book excerpt: Lipid Metabolism focuses on the regulation and metabolism of lipids. This book is composed of 10 chapters that specifically deal with fatty acids, prostaglandins, glycerides, glycerophosphates, cholesterol, isoprenoids, and aromatic compounds. This text starts with an overview of fatty acid metabolism and its controlling factors. This topic is followed by discussions on the physiochemical aspects of oxidative metabolism of fatty acids, with a special emphasis on the role of carnitine in this process. A chapter highlights the several important aspects of higher plant lipid metabolism. Other chapters are devoted to the structures, biosynthesis, and metabolism of prostaglandins, bacterial lipids, phospholipids, glycerides, and steroids. The final chapters describe the biogenesis of aromatic substances through the polyketide path, including polyisoprenoid quinines and related compounds.

Each meeting has introduced or developed some new concepts in the areas of lipid metabolism and drugs. The meetings have served as a springboard for new ideas which have, between meetings, become accepted and exploited. This meeting has been no exception. Principal among the many new concepts discussed were lipoprotein synthesis and metabolism, apoprotein structure and function, whole body metabolism of cholesterol, and aspects of myocardial and aortic metabolism. The Symposium also included a summary of current thought on management of hyperlipemias and atherosclerosis. Data on more than 30 drugs were introduced and discussed. We have every expectation that the next Symposium will include material which is now only in the formative stage. The Organizing Committee would like to acknowledge the invaluable assistance of Miss Mary Constant, Mr. Ralph H. Hollerorth, Mrs. Carolyn P. Hyatt and Miss Jane T. Kolimaga, whose efforts contributed significantly (p

Book excerpt: Nutritional Epigenomics, Second Edition, Volume Fourteen in the Translational Epigenetics series, offers a comprehensive overview of nutritional epigenomics as a mode of study, along with nutrition's role in the epigenomic regulation of disease, health, and developmental processes. Here, an expert team of international contributors introduces readers to nutritional epigenomic regulators of gene expression, our diet's role in epigenomic regulation of disease and disease inheritance, caloric restriction and exercise as they relate to recent epigenomic findings, and the influence of nutritional epigenomics over circadian rhythms, aging and longevity, and fetal health and development, among other processes. Disease specific chapters address metabolic disease (obesity and diabetes), cancer, and neurodegeneration, among other disorders. Diet-gut microbiome interactions in the epigenomic regulation of disease are also discussed, as is the role of micronutrients and milk miRNAs in epigenetic regulation. Finally, chapter authors examine ongoing discussions of race and ethnicity in the social-epigenomic regulation of health and disease. This new edition has been fully updated to reflect current research in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The liver is an exceptionally complex and diverse organ that functions both as an exocrine and an endocrine gland. It secretes bile, which contains many con stituents in addition to bile salts, and it synthesizes and releases many substances in response to the body's demands, including prohormones, albumin, clotting factors, glucose, fatty acids, and various lipoproteins. It has a dual blood supply providing a rich mixture of nutrients and other absorbed substances via the portal vein and oxygen-rich blood via the hepatic artery. This functional heterogeneity is accompanied by cellular heterogeneity. The liver contains many cell types including hepatic parachymal cells, Kiipffer cells, Ito cells, and endothelial cells. The most abundant cell type, the parenchymal cells, are biochemically and structurally heterogeneous. The cells in the oxygen-rich areas of the portal triad appear more dependent on oxidative metabolism, whereas those around the central vein (pericentral, perivenous, or centrolobular areas) are more dependent upon an anaerobic mechanism. Throughout this volume the latter three terms are used synonymously by various authors to indicate the five to eight layers of cells radiating from the central vein. Structural and metabolic heterogeneity of hepatic parenchymal cells has been demonstrated by a variety of approaches, including histochemical, ultra structural, and ultramicrobiochemical studies. This microheterogeneity is linked to the physiological functions of the liver and its response to injurious substances.
