Understanding how to minimize the consequences of secondary exposure is critical for volunteer retention and well-being. Utilizing a Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) framework, this study examined the mediating role of secondary traumatic stress to the relationship between secondary trauma exposure and intentions to quit among CASA volunteers. Further, it explored two resources for volunteers exposed to secondary trauma: organizational social support and compassion satisfaction. Results indicated that severity of trauma exposure was the best predictor of secondary traumatic stress compared with frequency and duration of trauma interactions. Secondary traumatic stress, but not secondary trauma exposure, predicted volunteers' intentions to quit. Organizational social support did not buffer the effect of secondary trauma exposure on secondary trauma stress. Likewise, compassion satisfaction did not buffer the effect of secondary traumatic stress on intentions to quit. Implications for non-profit organizations and future research avenues are discussed.

Book excerpt: The impact of traumatic exposure among firefighters has been widely studied within the psychological literature over the last two decades due to the high risk for such occurrences as compared to most other occupations. Firefighting is one of the most dangerous occupations in North America, with a considerable mortality rate. Previous research has shown that due to job-related trauma, firefighters have incurred higher rates of mental health concerns and job burnout. However, the function of humor among firefighters as a social bonding agent and coping strategy is a new concept. The aim of the present study was to explore the moderating effect of humor and social support on PTSD and burnout among currently employed firefighters working in Southern California. It was hypothesized that: (a) trauma exposure would be significantly correlated with PTSD, burnout, and depression, (b) social support would moderate the effect of trauma on PTSD, burnout, and depression, (c) humor would act as a secondary moderator such that the moderating effect of social support would be conditional on the use of humor, and (d) sleep on and off shift would moderate the effect of trauma on PTSD and burnout. The participants recruited for this study were 153 (94% male, 71% Caucasian) currently employed firefighters from Southern California. Surveys completed through Qualtrics were analyzed using Hayes PROCESS macro model 3 and 1. Results showed that social support and humor independently predict PTSD symptoms, burnout, and depression. However, they do not significantly moderate the relationship between trauma experiences and PTSD or burnout symptoms. Furthermore, community support significantly moderated trauma experiences and depression symptoms. Finally, sleep on shift significantly moderated the relationship between trauma exposure and burnout symptoms, as well as sleep off shift on trauma exposure and PTSD symptoms. This study suggests that while social support and a sense of community are important factors in the well-being of a firefighter’s life, further treatment is needed to mitigate such painful symptoms due to the traumatic nature of their job. Furthermore, humor may function as a coping strategy among community members, but the results indicate that this is insufficient in the treatment and reduction of mental health concerns among firefighters on the job. One implication of these findings is that targeted behavioral health interventions within their community are essential to support the mental health of these firefighters. Furthermore, initiatives for increased sleep by employing agencies could significantly support the health and safety of this population.

Book excerpt: Mental health clinicians often work with clients who have been through significant trauma, and clinicians face risks of traumatization themselves through exposure to the traumatic stories of clients. This indirect traumatization is known as vicarious trauma (VT), and research has shown this to be related to burnout in mental health workers. Mental health clinicians must find a delicate balance between work and family roles, and the present study aimed to determine how this work interference with family (WIF) can explain the relationship between VT and burnout, and how support from the organization can ameliorate the negative effects of VT on the balance between work and family. Questionnaire responses were anonymously collected and analyzed from 110 mental health professionals working in mental health organizations sampled from several counties around Ohio. Analyses of the responses supported the hypotheses that WIF explains the relationship between VT and burnout, but perceived organizational support (POS) does not moderate the relationship VT and WIF, therefore rejecting those hypotheses. On this basis, it is recommended that mental health organizations educate employees on balancing work and family roles and provide adequate resources such as paid time off to help clinicians avoid burnout. Further research is needed to determine if POS is more effective at preventing VT than addressing it.

The goals of the pilot program are to reduce stress levels for Emergency Response workers and improve the service provided to children and families in crisis. The actual submission and/or funding of this grant was not a requirement for the successful completion of this project.

Book excerpt: In the social work field, burnout, vicarious trauma, secondary trauma and compassion fatigue are all terms often used to describe exhaustion from seeing clients. This is a serious and prevalent issue that social workers must work on consciously to combat or address. Social workers play a key role in helping clients recover from trauma, which in turn puts them at risk of experiencing indirect trauma such as vicarious trauma, secondary traumatic stress, and compassion fatigue. Unfortunately, social work students are at an even greater risk of experiencing forms of indirect trauma as they are often unprepared to cope with new experiences as novices to working with families who are experiencing trauma. While there have been studies on reducing indirect trauma of practitioners, there is a lack of research on the experiences of social work students in field placements, and on the crucial role of supervision in supporting students to cope with exposure to trauma. In response, this paper conducts a systematic review of the literature for the purpose of answering the following research questions. First, are social work students prepared with the tools to identify burnout, compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma and secondary trauma? Second, have social work students been taught the skills to identify and measure burnout, compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma and secondary trauma in the classroom or supervision? Third, do they know ways to effectively identify the warning signs and ways to prevent and treat burnout, compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma and secondary trauma within themselves? Fourth, what recommendations for planning, implementing, and evaluating the students' experiences and needed support in these areas are provided to benefit social work education?

Book excerpt: "Exposure to the aversive details of traumatic events has been shown to present a risk to the personal and professional well-being of intimate partner violence (IPV) social workers. My dissertation presents a study, comprised of three manuscripts, that describes current knowledge on workplace social support as well as presents insights derived from interviews with five IPV social workers on their understandings and experiences of workplace social support. The first manuscript is a scoping review that looks specifically at experiences, potential impacts, and factors related to human service professionals' exposure to the aversive details of IPV. This review is guided by the research question "What has been found in the empirical, peer-reviewed, scholarly literature examining exposure to the aversive details of IPV amongst human service professionals?" Thirteen relevant empirical, scholarly studies investigating exposure to the aversive details of IPV and human service professionals were identified. The results of this scoping review support previous research that has found IPV human service professionals to be at elevated risk of harm as a result of their work. Workplace social support emerges as a protective factor against adverse impacts on human service professionals' well-being and a gap is identified in how workplace social support is conceptualized. To address this gap, I designed a study using interpretive phenomenological analysis that explores workplace social support experiences and sense-making amongst five IPV social workers. The results of this study are presented in two manuscripts. The first takes up the following questions: "How do IPV social workers describe experiences related to their workplaces that they perceive as socially supportive?" and "How do experiences that are perceived as socially supportive or unsupportive impact them?" As will be seen, I argue that mentalization--a theory describing how people make sense of themselves, make sense of their work and regulate their emotions through relational interactions (Bateman, Bales, & Hutsebaut, 2014; Bateman & Fonagy, 2013; Freeman, 2016) -- can help us understand the process, as described by IPV social workers, that brings about experiences perceived to be workplace social support. In the second manuscript, I present findings that respond to the research question "How do IPV social workers make sense of their experiences related to workplace social support?" Epistemic trust as described by Fonagy, Luyten, Allison, and Campbell (2017) is proposed as a framework through which to rethink what constitutes these IPV social workers' descriptions of effective workplace social support. Workplace social support can therefore be understood as trusting engagement resulting from the perception and availability of interactions characterized by good mentalization. This novel way of conceptualizing workplace social support proposes a process of social engagement that promotes IPV social workers capacities to cope with, and adapt to, challenging experiences inherent in IPV practice. These theoretical models synthesized with current knowledge about IPV social workers' workplace social support make an important contribution to the social work, IPV, trauma, mentalization and epistemic trust literatures. As such, recommendations are made for practice, education, training and future research. " --
