In the past decade a group of investigators has begun to examine the contributions of genetics, and both shared and nonshared environment to development. As with many new research endeavors, this has proven to be a difficult task with much controversy and disagreement not only about the most appropriate models and methods of analysis to be used, but also about the interpretation of findings. Written by some of the foremost scholars working in the area on nonshared environment, the papers in this book present their perspectives, concerns, strategies and research findings dealing with the impact of nonshared environment on individual differences in the development of siblings. This volume will have heuristic value in stimulating researchers to think in new ways about the interactions between heredity, shared and nonshared environment and the challenges in identifying their contributions to sibling differences. These papers should raise new questions about how to examine the contributions of genetic and environmental factors to development, with consideration given to the findings of this study of sibling differences and nonshared environment. Part one is a systematic literature review, in which the literature pertaining to factors that impact on the psychological wellbeing of parents of children with type 1 diabetes is reviewed. The review begins with an overview of the research relating to parents of diabetic children, which is followed by a rationale for why this review would be an interesting addition to the literature. The paper then describes the methods used to collect the relevant studies. The review synthesises the results in a way which makes it clear which factors impact on each measure of psychological wellbeing. An overview of the findings is then given. The paper closes with limitations of the review, suggestions for future research and conclusions. Part two is a preliminary pilot study in which empathy and sibling relationships are the focus. This cross-sectional study explores empathy and the quality of the sibling relationship as perceived by diabetic children, their healthy siblings and siblings in which both children are physically healthy. Based on Furman and Burhmester's (1985) model of the determinants of the quality of sibling relationships, the study moves on to explore the predictive effect of empathy on children's perceptions of their sibling relationship. The paper presents the findings and conclusions before discussing the clinical implications and the pilot study's limitations. Part three is a set of appendixes to support the work in the first two parts. It also contains a reflective account to explore the process of developing this portfolio thesis.

Book excerpt: Past research has demonstrated the importance of the sibling relationship in regard to children's social and emotional development, and specifically in the development of self- regulation skills (Bedford & Volling, 2004; Tucker & Updegraff, 2009). This study examined how children regulate their own behaviors and emotions, as well as how they socialize their siblings to be able to use regulation skills. The role of temperament, and specifically a child's level of negative affectivity and activity level, in the utilization of the regulation and socialization behaviors was also examined, as temperament has been linked to self-regulation abilities in addition to the overall functioning of the sibling relationship (Brody, 1998; Cole, Dennis, Smith-Simon, & Cohen, 2008). It was hypothesized that older siblings would be more likely to use regulation and socialization behaviors overall, and that the sibling of a child with a difficult temperament would use more negative behaviors to socialize their sibling. Participants were sibling dyads (n = 70) between the ages of two and five. Children participated in a gift wrap and delay task to measure their regulation and socialization behaviors. Parents filled out questionnaires regarding children's temperament. Results indicated that older siblings used more regulation and socialization behaviors, but not in all measures. Siblings of children with more difficult temperaments did tend to use more control behaviors, but these findings were not significant. The results of this study emphasize the importance of studying children's regulation capabilities and learning processes in the context of the sibling relationship.

Book excerpt: Three empirical studies comprising this dissertation were carried out to provide a more comprehensive understanding of concurrent measures of both predictors and outcomes of young adolescents' sibling interactions. The participants included older siblings (M age = 14.3), younger siblings (M age = 11.6), and their mothers from approximately 450 families who completed web-based surveys. Study one examined correlates of overt and relational aggression between young adolescent siblings. Family environment emerged as an important factor in explaining internalizing problems as well as overt/relational aggression for both younger and older siblings. Findings also provided partial support for the positive linkages between young adolescents' aggression and their own and siblings' internalizing problems above and beyond family and maternal variables. The main purpose of the study two was to investigate self-criticism as a potential mediating factor in the link between mother-child relationships and aggression or perceptions of social competence. Maternal self-criticism strongly corresponded to the quality of relationships with children, and an intergenerational similarity of self-criticism, particularly for older children, was found. Mother-child relationships and adolescent self-criticism were significantly related to aggression and perceptions of social competence. In addition, the link between mother-child relationships and aggression or social competence is mediated, in part, by self-criticism in adolescents. Using social control theory and attachment theory as guides, study three examined how qualities of young adolescents' socialrelationships (i.e., mother, sibling, and friend), and dynamic interactions among characteristics of those relationships, are associated with school involvement and delinquency. Results were largely consistent with tenets of social control theory and attachment theory. Young adolescents' social relationships were associated with their adjustment in ways that are protective or beneficial. Furthermore, these social affordances worked additively and in compensatory ways to promote positive adjustment. Positive relationship qualities tended to amplify other relational influences promoting successful development, and these findings were invariant across gender. While optimal mother-child relationships are central in nurturing the child's capacity to develop warm and harmonious sibling relationships in both a direct and an indirect manner, there is a considerable contribution of siblings to adjustment and socialization above and beyond the effects of mother-child relationships.
