Book excerpt: Economic personalism can benefit by viewing itself in relation to other contemporary and historical efforts to understand the relationship between theology and economics. This essay summarizes some of those efforts, focusing on themes that are pivotal to the economic personalist enterprise. In particular, the views of social economists, Kuyperians, Christian mainstream economists, and Christian solidarists are treated. The article concludes by suggesting that economic personalism must reflect the best insights of each of these groups, offering a truly interdisciplinary approach to economics and social thought.

Book excerpt: A Book That Could Change Your Thinking About Social and Economic Justice Forever For over 200 years people have been systematically stripped of their dignity as human persons, first by capitalism, then by socialism, as capital ownership became concentrated first in a private élite, then in a State bureaucracy. Forgotten was the demand that the dignity of every child, woman, and man be respected by equal access to the opportunity and means to be productive through ownership of both labor and capital. In Economic Personalism: Power, Property and Justice for Every Person, co-authors Michael D. Greaney and Dawn K. Brohawn explain briefly what happened and why. They then present the principles of how essential institutions can be put back on track to serve the needs of every person. Giving the framework for an economic order that is neither individualist (capitalism) nor collectivist (socialism), but personalist, this book brings into the light of day assumptions about nature, society, and the human person, and about Church, State, and Family that have raised barriers against the full participation of every person in the institutions of the common good. The result of years of intensive research and work in applying the principles of the Just Third Way, Economic Personalism has the potential not only to revitalize how individuals view their institutions and their place in society, but lays out principles that could guide and inspire debate on vital issues of the day and shape public discourse and future policy. Although based on Catholic social teaching based on natural law, the book is written from an interfaith perspective and is readily accessible and applicable by people of all faiths and philosophies.

Book excerpt: Personalist Economics: Moral Convictions, Economic Realities, and Social Action examines the nature of the worker and consumer from a personalist perspective, comparing that body of knowledge to what is received from conventional economics. A running theme throughout this book is that personalist economics is attentive to both aspects of human material need - physical need and the need for work as such - in a way that does not disregard human wants. Accordingly, this book is more concerned about the philosophical base and description of the economy's significant characteristics than social economic policy. Personalist Economics explores four dimensions of particularly acute human physical need: unemployment, poverty, homelessness, and death. In addressing these four aspects of need, the book delves into the second and third domains of social economics: description of the significant characteristics of the economy, and social economic policy. In the same way, Personalist Economics explores two types of economic cooperation - supra-firm alliances and inter-firm partnerships - as means for addressing certain aspects of human material need. This book concludes with a lengthy discussion of the challenges facing personalist economics in the years ahead.

Book excerpt: Economic Personalism (EP) of Acton Institute (USA) has emerged as a school of thought that claims to offer solution to the predicament of human reduction in capitalist economics. This book has raised critical reservations regarding EP's claims when seen against the background of market contradictions, like alienation, commodification, and reification of human beings. In other words, even if EP sees itself as offering a "right approach," its embeddedness in a liberal-capitalist world makes EP a part of capitalism's contradictions. In order to verify EP's claims, this book makes use of social scientific lenses. Assumed to possess interests masked behind its canonical statements, this book subjects the EP document through Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Historical-Critical Analysis to uncover both the implicit intentions of its claims as well as its implicit interests and ideologies. In this way, a critical social analysis of EP would verify suspicions through the rigor of a scientific analysis.

Book excerpt: Foundations of Economic Personalism is a series of three book-length monographs, each closely examining a significant dimension of the Center for Economic Personalism's unique synthesis of Christian personalism and free-economic market theory. In the aftermath of the momentous geo-political and economic changes of the late 1980s, a small group of Christian social ethicists began to converse with free-market economists over the morality of market activity. This interdisciplinary exchange eventually led to the founding of a new academic subdiscipline under the rubric of economic personalism. These scholars attempt to integrate economic theory, history, and methodology with Christian personalism's stress upon human dignity, humane social structures, and social justice. This volume presents the methodological and theoretical foundations for economic personalism through a detailed investigation of human action from two different, yet complementary perspectives: from the personalist perspective of Karol Wojtyla in the Acting Person (1969), and the free-market perspective of Ludwig von Mises in Human Action (1949). By comparing and contrasting the viewpoints of Wojtyla and Mises, the authors develop a comprehensive praxeology (i.e., a theory of human action) capable of analyzing human action from moral and economic perspectives. Beyond Self-Interest illustrates how a unified praxeology could encourage more sustained analysis of the moral dimensions of economic activity while simultaneously softening the utilitarian prejudice of contemporary economic analysis.

This second volume in the series surveys the anthropological foundations to the disciplines of economics and moral theology. The first part of the book presents an overview of the German, French, and Polish branches of personalist thought. Particular attention is given to theological anthropology, especially as it is developed by such thinkers as Emmanuel Mounier, Max Scheler, Gabriel Marcel, Karol Wojtyla, and Emil Brunner. Part two surveys models of human nature that have been espoused by various schools of free-market thought-including mainstream neoclassical economics. In conclusion, the authors demonstrate how an expanded understanding of human nature can augment the ability of economic science to model and predict human behavior.

Book excerpt: The Acton Institute's three-volume series on the Foundations of Economic Personalism contributes much to the dialogue between theology and economics. This article, however, identifies a number of shortcomings. These include an overly individualistic bias and a reliance on the Austrian school of economics that are not consonant with Christian and especially Catholic social thought on economic life. There is a certain naivete about the philosophy of science and an artificial bifurcation between economic life (where values are assumed to be subjective) and the rest of life (where objective values are endorsed). The dialogue between theology and economics is badly needed, but it requires a strong dose of self-criticism from all its participants.

Book excerpt: “A Humane Economy is like a seminar on integral freedom conducted by a professor of uncommon brilliance.” —Wall Street Journal “If any person in our contemporary world is entitled to a hearing it is Wilhelm Röpke.” —New York Times A Humane Economy offers one of the most accessible and compelling explanations of how economies operate ever written. The masterwork of the great twentieth-century economist Wilhelm Röpke, this book presents a sweeping, brilliant exposition of market mechanics and moral philosophy. Röpke cuts through the jargon and statistics that make most economic writing so obscure and confusing. Over and over, the great Swiss economist stresses one simple point: you cannot separate economic principles from human behavior. Röpke’s observations are as relevant today as when they were first set forth a half century ago. He clearly demonstrates how those societies that have embraced free-market principles have achieved phenomenal economic success—and how those that cling to theories of economic centralization endure stagnation and persistent poverty. A Humane Economy shows how economic processes and government policies influence our behavior and choices—to the betterment or detriment of life in those vital and highly fragile human structures we call communities. “It is the precept of ethical and humane behavior, no less than of political wisdom,” Röpke reminds us, “to adapt economic policy to man, not man to economic policy.”

Book excerpt: Much like phenomenology, the philosophical movement of economic personalism has preceded its complete and clear awareness of itself as a philosophical position. This article attempts to articulate what exactly this position is by employing a phenomenological analysis. The organization of this investigation consists of three parts. The first is a linguistic analysis of the names economics and personalism that attempts to arrive at a joint meaning of these terms. The second is a regressive inquiry from meaning to a priori apprehension, and this examination is aimed at making the essential nature of economic personalism perspicuous. The third presents the necessary and sufficient conditions for either conduct or a situation to qualify as an object in the domain of economic personalism.

Thomas R. Rourke and Rosita A. Chazarreta Rourke introduce readers to new sources of personalism by investigating and revising the intellectual history of this theory and its development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comments addresses only the introductory part of the first monograph in this series in which the authors set forth their theoretical foundations, and it is organized along three lines: areas of agreement, areas of disagreement, and suggestions for building a new paradigm for economics based on personalism. We agree that the premises of mainstream economics need reconstruction; that in economic affairs persons are more important than things; that there is a real difference between persons and institutions; and that humans are meant to be free. We disagree on several counts, including the needs and wants of the human body and human spirit, which are met through consumption, work, and leisure. Most important among our suggestions is the need to construct a new economics around the changing roles of the economic agent in which the homo economicus and individualism of the old economy are replaced by homo socioeconomicus and personalism, which are better-suited to the new economy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The capability approach has developed significantly since Amartya Sen was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1998. It is now recognised as being highly beneficial in the analysis of poverty and inequality, but also in the redefinition of policies aimed at improving the well-being of individuals. The approach has been applied within numerous sectors, from health and education to sustainable development, but beyond the obvious interest that it represents for the classical economics tradition, it has also encountered certain limitations. While acknowledging the undeniable progress that the approach has made in renewing the thinking on the development and well-being of a population, this book takes a critical stance. It focuses particularly on the approach’s inadequacy vis-à-vis the continental phenomenological tradition and draws conclusions about the economic analysis of development. In a more specific sense, it highlights the fact that the approach is too bound by standard economic logic, which has prevented it from taking account of a key ‘person’ dimension — namely, the ability of an individual to assume responsibility. As a result, this book advocates the notion that if the approach is used carelessly in relation to development policies, it can cause a number of pernicious effects, some of which may lead to disastrous consequences. Due to its multidisciplinary nature, this book will be of interest to those working in the fields of economics, philosophy, development studies and sociology.
