Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Consumers' Co-Operative Movement The reader will find in this book, not a history of the Co-operative Movement in Great Britain, but a descriptive analysis of its present position, with a survey of its relation to other manifestations of Democracy and of its possibilities for the future. We have now been for thirty years investigating and describing democratic institutions, and only in the twenty-ninth year did we publish any volume dealing with national government or the Political State. We started at the opposite end, not only because the other manifestations of Democracy - in Trade Unionism and consumers' Co-operation, and in the various developments of Local Government - had been relatively neglected by writers on Political Science; but also because, to us as Socialists, these other manifestations seemed actually of greater importance than the Political State itself. For we have always held that it is in this spontaneous undergrowth of social tissue, rather than in a further hypertrophy of the national government, that will be found, for the most part the institutions destined increasingly to supersede the Capitalist System. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Farm Cooperative Movement It is hoped that this volume will bring some thing of the magnitude of the farm cooperative movement to the business man, the consumer and to the farmer himself. We have attempted to sketch the causes of unrest which gave birth to the movement, to give a glimpse of the magnitude of the local cooperative movement, and to outline the more recent step taken; namely, the federation movement, much of which is still in the process of formation. There has been no partizan purpose in the writing of this book. The central purpose has been to present the facts. Any matters of belief occurring to the author have been placed in the last three chapters of the book, relating to the future of the movement. Of course, the reader is at liberty to formulate his own Opinions concern ing the movement, but we believe that he will be interested, at least, in these pages. Grateful acknowledgment is made to the many authorities quoted and to the many investigators in the employ of state and nation whose tables, charts and graphs are reprinted herewith. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Consumers Co-Operative Societies The excellent translation of Professor Gide's "Les Societes Cooperatives de consommation" which follows is the result of the labors of the staff of the Co-operative Reference Library, Dublin, Ireland. The present editor, in preparing the book for an American public, has, by permission of the fellow-co-operators in Dublin, eliminated such of the English footnotes as were of interest principally to British readers or has incorporated them in his own. He has also moved up into the text many of Professor Gide's notes added by him at the time of the translation into English. Therefore at present there are only the two kinds of footnotes: those of the original author and those of the American editor. Without the painstaking work of the translators and those who assisted them, this American edition would probably not have been undertaken at this time. Without Professor Gide's help in reading through the proofs and making several valuable suggestions, the book would not have the contemporary value it now possesses. Finally, Dr. Warbasse, in contributing a preface and a chapter on "Co-operation in the United States," has made this book, always indispensible to the student of European Co-operation, an essential to those who are studying the Co-operative Movement in the United States. The present editor is honoured in being able to append a few additional American notes and to prepare this edition for the publisher. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Consumers' Cooperation Until the war, no speaker on Consumers' Cooperation could escape a question as pertinent as it was monoto nous: Why has success been so brilliant and con tinuous in England and other European countries while result-s are so meager in the United States? For the first time this form of Cooperation has become a serious working class interest. Extensively and in tensively it is on a scale which makes possible if not an answer, at least a more confident prophecy that we are to take our place in this world attempt to make democratizing industry something more than a phrase. I am far from giving it as a primary or even a sec ondary reason why cooperation so long halted in this country, but it has been sorely hampered by muddling together economic activities which have very little in common. A state of mind in which Profit-sharing, Labor Copartnership, Citrous Fruit Companies, Co operative Creameries and the like, are identical with Consumers' Cooperation, is one in which progress is embarrassed. The aggregate capital of the consumers' Co-operative Movement in Great Britain at the end of 1920, allowing for duplications, can hardly have been less than 100,000,000, a truly remarkable aggregation of the savings of the four million Co-operators, and one constituting far and away the largest business enterprise under the administration of the wage-earning class of any nation. (b) The Political Transformation Perhaps the most momentous effect of the Great War on the British Co-operative Movement has been the quickening of its political self-consciousness. Down to 1914 the Movement had remained, so far as any corporate manifestation was concerned, strictly non-political. Co-operators were, individually, Conservative, Liberal, or Labour in their political sympathies or affiliations, but the Co-operative society, as such, abstained from political partisanship. Now and again, when some action of Parliament or a government department was objected to, or when some alteration in law or administration was desired in the interest of the Movement itself, representations, public or CO-OPERATIVE POLITICS 245 private, would be made in the name of Co-operation; and in these representations Co-operators of all political sympathies would join. Probably a majority of the active Co-operators were attached to the Liberal Party, to which most of the leading members belonged. There were among them many Conservatives and a growing number of adherents of the Labour Party. Within the Movement itself there was, however, by common consent the very minimum of "party politics." By the end of the war a great change had occurred. The demand for representation of the Movement in the House of Commons had become...

Book excerpt: The survival of indigenous communities and the first European settlers alike depended on a deeply cooperative style of living and working, based around common lands, shared food and labor. Cooperative movements proved integral to the grassroots organizations and struggles challenging the domination of unbridled capitalism in America's formative years. Holding aloft the vision for an alternative economic system based on cooperative industry, they have played a vital, and dynamic role in the struggle to create a better world. Seeking to reclaim a history that has remained largely ignored by most historians, this dramatic and stirring account examines each of the definitive American cooperative movements for social change - farmer, union, consumer, and communalist - that have been all but erased from collective memory. Focusing far beyond one particular era, organization, leader, or form of cooperation, For All the People documents the multigenerational struggle of the American working people for social justice. With an expansive sweep and breathtaking detail, the chronicle follows the American worker from the colonial workshop to the modern mass-assembly line, ultimately painting a vivid panorama of those who built the United States and those who will shape its future. John Curl, with over forty years of experience as both an active member and scholar of cooperatives, masterfully melds theory, practice, knowledge and analysis, to present the definitive history from below of cooperative America.

Thinking too little is not to discern its usefulness; expecting too much is to bespeak disappoint ment at its actual success.
