Book excerpt: Invasive surveillance software, known as 'spyware', is presently available to general consumer audiences. A sizeable market has emerged of a number of companies who sell spyware targeted at consumers who wish to place a smartphone or personal computer under intensive monitoring. This research focused exclusively on smartphones and discovered that it is relatively easy to purchase software that can remotely collect text messages, phone conversation recordings, GPS location data, and access the camera of a targeted device. Crucially, this data can be collected 'by stealth' with the user of the device having no indicators that their privacy is being compromised.

It highlights several factors driving the industry, including elevated demand for intrusion technology from government clients and private customers, as well as inconsistent political will from democratic governments to crack down on these technologies.
