Excerpt: ... the block, shown at D, resting upon the anvil, re it is generally trimmed and dressed up to template by: rs and flatters. The'D link shown in Fig. 255 is another of spring link. It is received from the forge as shown, the first operation in the smithy being to block it under iteam hammer in the swage B, with a round fuller on the which prepares it for the finishing swage C, and it is cut to length by the C gouge as at D. Fig. 256 is shown the punch and die for punching out nch plate one end of the safety-valve lever. G is a; H, the end elevation; K, a part section on A B of the plan G, showing inch lead on the punch at the centre, and L is a section on C D E P. There is a-j-inch clearance in the die, and-inch taper per side on the punch; and taking the figures as a whole, they are clearly indicative of their manipulation. After the punching has been dressed up, leaving, say, inch per side for milling, it is scarfed at M and the long arm. welded on. The group of tools shown in Fig. 257 are for producing the screw couplings. C and Cx are punched in a die, the form of which will readily present itself to the reader's mind. Two of these are required for each shackle, and they are coupled direct by means of a bolt to the hook. D and D1 show the punch and die for producing each end of the link H. It is made out of 3-inch by f-inch mild steel bar, and after each end has been stamped the middle is drawn down and rounded to 1 inch diameter. The screw E is made out of 2f-inch round mild steel by first flattening under the hammer the short or shank end, then a round edged fuller is set in each side of the shank and each end drawn down; a few blows upon the flat of the shank and the whole finished in swages, one for the round section...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Locomotive Construction The series of articles treating on Modern Locomotive Construction recently published in the American Machinist, which, by the request of its editor, I commenced while I was engaged as chief draftsman at the Grant Locomotive Works, Paterson, N.J., and concluded after I had joined the editorial staff of the American Machinist, form the basis of this book. All the illustrations, with very few exceptions, were made from working drawings expressly for these papers. The favorable recognition which these papers have received induced me to revise them thoroughly and add more than fifty per cent. of new matter, with the necessary illustrations, which also had to be made expressly for the purpose, and to publish the whole in book form. In these pages the locomotive is described in detail, and an endeavor has been made to show clearly the application of theoretical principles to the design of the different parts which make up the whole. The aim is to assist practical men whose daily and exacting duties have prevented them from taking up theoretical investigations, and to assist those who are about to enter the business of locomotive building, who have had no opportunity for an extended preparation, to design with confidence and success. It is also hoped that the illustrations will supply to some extent the want of a collection of drawings, such as are usually found in first-class establishments, and which are often difficult to procure, though extremely useful for guidance and reference. The book is not only intended for study, but it is also designed as a handbook for those who are engaged in locomotive construction. In this work novelty has rather been avoided than sought, and only such methods of construction have been given as have been found to be useful in every-day practice. Some of the formulas have been taken from Prof. W. C. Unwin's "Elements of Machine Design"; other authorities have also been freely consulted, and credit given in the text. I have endeavored to make the rules, formulas, and the general treatment of the subject as simple as possible, divest it of all complexity, and to make the whole comprehensive enough for any intelligent mechanic. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Construction of the Modern Locomotive, Vol. 6 After the plates are drilled they are marked for lap by using the butt strip template at each end, thus - The template is laid on and steadying pins put through the holes, the ends marked with a scriber, and then either a long straighbedge and scriber, or a chalk line is used, the plates having been drilled as far as possible to admit of shearing on two edges only, one side and one end. At the same tims, the second barrel plate is marked for punching out the dome hole, which is not removed until after the plate has been bent, being held from four opposite points; and the third barrel-plate is marked for punching the clearance for the saddle or throat-plate, which is removed entirely before bend'mg, The plates are then sheared and punched, leaving g inch or fig inch for the planing machine. In all boiler shops there are plate edge planing machines to plane edges from 10 to 20 feet, some with turnover tool boxes, some with quick return; the former should be used wherever possible, because of the great saving of time, not to mention wearing the back edge of the tool, for there are very few side planers fitted with spring boxes to lift the tool completely away from the work upon the quick return. Others are provided with the vertical lathe arrangement, and finally, the plate edge and butt planing machine When planing the limb or 135 inch from the edges of the plates, the tool is ground to an angle of about one in eight, and the edge of the plate must have the inclination of this angle, according to its eventual position, to suit the fullering; that is, the inside lap is planed to the opposite inclination of the outside lap, clearly shown in Figs. 1 - 4 and 11 - 13.
