Book excerpt: Many changes in one's lifetime are for the better; some are glaringly not. Progress of our modern world has led to the shadow of ""Political Correctness"" - every word written and spoken must be weighed lest someone will be insulted. No longer can we have a candid conversation for fear of banishment if we so much as use the wrong word, wrong idea, or thought that will offend someone. In this little book, is a very curious selection of tales and thoughts - philosophies perhaps - that are true stories that should offend no one. Yet in the course of these writings, when presented as opinion in newspapers around the United States, each of these has found someone who has been overwhelmed with my careless use of my imagination or choice of words. Hopefully you will find value, fun and humor in this ""Curious Collection of Politically Incorrect Opinions and Thoughts. If you do not find value, fun and humor in your readings, then you might want to change political parties. Or stay in bed.

Book excerpt: Bound Edition! An intriguing side-effect of having a great sense of smell is the ability to figure out "what's in" various meals that others have cooked. Likewise, it makes it easier to figure out how to make those dishes BETTER than the ones found in most cookbooks by changing ingredients or cooking methods. "Cookin' In The Woods" is a simple compilation of many very easy-to-make, last-minute, recipes that will have your friends and family begging for the recipe. In fact, that is exactly how this little cookbook came about: Never using any written guide, I have always had the knack to repeat excellent meals that all enjoy. Once finished, I usually get asked for the recipe and have never had such a thing - until now. You will notice that there are NO desserts here...only filling, satisfying and wholesome meals for all appetites. "Nothing Sweet....." These are my favorites and I hope that you enjoy them as much as thousands of my taste-testers have over the past 50 years!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I firmly believe that all people are poets; also I think that most poets never write for anyone but themselves. Writing poetry will save a bright mind a fortune, for you will never need a therapist when you write from your heart. The work is highly personal, emotional, and sinks deep into the very essence of the soul of the writer. That being said, I hope that you read and enjoy Fireflies From Orion, this being a selection composed of over fifty years of my writing prose. There are sad poems, happy poems, spiritual writings, emotion-evoking words...as all poetry should be. Fireflies is poetry truly from the heart, not written to appease the strictest school of composition, not please those with whom iambic pentameter is a requirement along with every line to rhyme....you will not find that in Fireflies. You will find raw poetry, prose of both regular and irregular rhythm, words that hopefully will paint pictures and evoke memories in your mind from times long ago, now gone

Book excerpt: An accessible, informative guide to identifying constellations and other incredible features of the sky, whether you’re hiking, camping, or stargazing from your backyard. Discover the Stars leads you on a tour of all the stars and constellations visible with the naked eye and introduces you to deep-sky objects that can be seen with binoculars or a simple telescope. The tour is conducted by the editor of Astronomy magazine, Richard Berry, whose two-color, computer-plotted sky maps and clear instructions make stargazing fun and productive from your first night out. The heart of Discover the Stars is two sections of big, beautiful sky maps and charts. The first section features twelve maps that show the entire sky overhead as it appears during each month of the year. These outline all the constellations visible anywhere in the Northern Hemisphere, and the accompanying text reveals the rich ancient mythology that surrounds the star groups. The second section is made up of twenty-three star charts that depict smaller regions of the sky in great detail. These charts give the names of key stars and lead you to fascinating features such as stars with unusual colors, double stars, variable stars, nebulae, and galaxies. Separate chapters cover basics, such as how the stars move through the sky, how to find your way around the moon and the planets, making an astronomer's flashlight, and choosing and using a telescope—all in terms that are easy to grasp and remember. Discover the Stars is the perfect introduction to the heavens, simple enough to be useful if you're just starting out but packed with enough information to keep you learning and enjoying the stars for years to come.

Book excerpt: As early as 2030 the Arctic Ocean could lose essentially all of its ice during the warmest months of the year?a radical transformation that would destroy virtually all of the Arctic ecosystems and disrupt or destroy many northern communities, if not many communities along the coastal areas of Earth. Even now concentrations of Greenhouse gases are rising dramatically ? because of mankind's industry as well as human overpopulation leading to the destruction of the cycle of photosynthesis. The human of Earth seems to be leading its own extinction. Has the cycle reached its ?critical mass? and now unable to be reversed? Will popular social efforts such as ?Going Green? help in any way whatsoever at this point in a global evolutionary crisis? In only a few ? perhaps two ? generations of the human race might we know the answers to whether the human race will have a planet capable of sustaining life without ever leaving this world.

Book excerpt: Massive country-sized glaciers fall magnificently into the polar waters around them, one by one, eroding the great masses of ice that we have come to know as ?polar caps? of Earth. Great shelves of prehistory in frozen state are finally giving way to the warming blanket of air surrounding our planet, the results of which are going to be catastrophic for future generations of all living things. The cause of the glacial erosion is very simple: human population explosion and the results of human demand and consumption. Today it is likely to be unstopped. The nonsensical ?going green? movement should have begun in the early 1960's when scientists first sounded the alarm about this potential global disaster; suggesting even more ludicrous plans such as ?The Green New Deal? is nothing but political rhetoric?it is not a solution, only diversion from a solution. In fact, the problem is so large that possibly no effort short of the elimination of the human specie will stop the cycle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook is a guide to exploring the classical night sky and its wonderful telescopic sights. All 88 officially recognized constellations are presented in natural groups which are related by their origin and location in the sky. Each group is explained by a fascinating story which tells what each constellation represents, how it appears in the sky, and why the other constellations of the group are close by, or related in some other manner. Some of these stories are classical myths which show how and why ancient cultures saw the constellations as related groups. Others are about more modern astronomers who sought recognition by filling in the gaps between the ancient constellations with inventions of their own. Both types of stories are crafted to make the constellation groups memorable, so that amateur astronomers can not only locate and recognize the constellations more easily, but also be able to pinpoint the celestial objects they contain more quickly. Specific instructions are given for finding each constellation, how to spell and pronounce the constellation and star names, plus the origins of the star names. Finder charts show each constellation group and a large area of sky around the group. These charts also indicate pointer stars which aid in finding the constellations. More detailed charts show how each constellation figure is visualized through simple line drawings. For each constellation, there is a table of about 10 to 30 telescopic objects selected to include a wide range of difficulty. Some can be glimpsed with the unaided eye, others require a 12 or 14 inch telescope. All the most prominent telescopic objects are included, plus a varied selection of interesting, but much more difficult objects. The tables include each object’s celestial coordinates, type, size, brightness, other information specific to each type of object, and a recommendation of the appropriate telescope size needed for good viewing. There are also photographs of constellations and telescopic objects, detailed locator charts for the hard-to-find objects, and plots of binary star orbital motions. The same charts used to show the constellation figures are repeated, with the addition of symbols indicating the locations of all the selected telescopic objects. An index and seven appendices help the user find specific objects or classes of objects.

Book excerpt: This informative guide is an excellent introduction to the stars, constellations and nebulae that make up the visible sky at night. Nearly two-thirds of Americans no longer live in a place where the Milky Way, our home galaxy, is visible after dark. This guide not only shows you when it is visible, but also describes its major features and where to travel in order to see it.The guide contains three maps showing the evening sky four months apart, covering the entire year. Major stars and constellations are shown in each along with the position of the Milky Way. Information is given for how to spot these features during the night and any time of year. A fourth map highlights specific details of the summer Milky Way, the most spectacular sight anyone can see without need of a telescope, or even binoculars, under naturally dark conditions. In addition, we also provide a map of the United States showing where the darkest locations are and under what conditions the Milky Way and a sky full of stars are still visible. If you are planning a trip to a national park, where night sky programs, are some of the most popular programs offered to the public, or are looking to identify where the closest place to see a meteor shower or just enjoy the natural beauty of the Milky Way stretching from horizon to horizon, this guide provides what you are looking for.
