Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Consolations of the Cross: Addresses on the Seven Words of the Dying Lord, Given at S. Stephen's Church Boston, on Good Friday, 1902, Together With Two Sermons We are going to consider Christ in His suf ferings rather than the sufferings of Christ. The contemplation of Christ's sufi'erings can easily become a trap for emotional and morbid natures to shut men out from Him. Too often the preacher has made the Pas sion the centre of interest and the Person of Christ the incident, whereas Christ is all in all, and the Passion a background throw ing Him into relief. His personality is that which must enchain our attention as we try to relate ourselves afresh to Him, so that we shall receive new strength and hope to take up again our lives and our work. Book excerpt: Christ crucified, the sum and substance of the Gospel; the Priesthood of Christ, and the sufficiency of his Sacrifice to save, is the main thing I contend for against the Papists, who say, Christ's sacrifice is not sufficient without their sacrifice. Charity saves, says one. Without good works, no salvation, says another. A third says that Christ's sacrifice is not sufficient for our Salvation without believing, that believing saves, and that without believing, we cannot be saved. Ye see, they all urge a necessity of something for salvation besides Christ's Sacrifice, without which something, they say, we cannot be saved; so that they deny the sufficiency of Christ's sacrifice to save, and so deny that Christ does save. For those he saves, he saves by his sacrifice. Also if Christ and something else saves us, Christ saves us not. For he is no Saviour if he be but a part of a Saviour; therefore, in adding something to Christ's sacrifice, they deny the sufficiency of Christ's sacrifice.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Consolations by : Johann Gerhard
Download or read book Handbook of Consolations written by Johann Gerhard and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-05-26 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Johann Gerhard (1582-1637) was one of the leading dogmatic theologians of his time and was the authoritative voice of seventeenth-century Lutheran Orthodoxy. Yet, he also published numerous devotional works and meditations that were meant to be used in the daily lives of ordinary believers. The Handbook of Consolations sought to provide comfort and encouragement not only to those approaching death, but also to those who provided care for the sick and dying. Gerhard himself was no stranger to sickness and death, having lost his infant son and young wife, and faced numerous life-threatening illnesses throughout his life. In this pastoral work, which is the first complete English translation based on Gerhard's original Latin to be published since the seventeenth century, Gerhard brings together his extensive understanding of Scripture, theology, and church history in a practical and easy-to-understand manual that is as relevant and meaningful in the twenty-first century as it was in Gerhard's day.
