The volume includes an extensive introduction to turtle anatomy, taxonomy, phylogeny, biogeography, and physiology. A key to the turtles of Mexico is included along with individual species accounts featuring geographic distribution maps and detailed color illustrations. Specific topics discussed for each species include habitat, diet, feeding behavior, reproduction, predators, parasites, growth and ontogeny, sexual dimorphism, growth rings, economic use, conservation, legal protection, and taxonomic studies. This book is a complete reference for scientists, conservationists, and professional and amateur enthusiasts who wish to study Mexican turtles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Turtle Conservation provides a comprehensive analysis of threats to turtles and tortoises worldwide. Considering the most significant problems facing the group, Michael Klemens and eighteen international experts on turtle biology and conservation chart successes and failures of past conservation programs, discuss the use of genetics and demography in turtle conservation, and propose more effective strategies that take into account chelonian biology as well as the economic and social situations affecting turtle conservation efforts. They review the outlook for marine, freshwater, semi-aquatic, and terrestrial species; show how turtles make poor candidates for most wild-harvest programs; and propose that turtle and tortoise conservation efforts be integrated into more broadly focused, locally supported land-use projects." "For land and wildlife managers as well as herpetologists and conservation biologists, this book provides a wide-ranging survey of efforts to conserve one of the world's most ancient and endangered groups."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: From the hefty alligator snapping turtle—the largest freshwater turtle in North America and the only turtle in the world with a predatory lure in its mouth—to the wood turtle, which uses “worm stomping” to catch earthworms, to the lovely ornate box turtle, which closes its shell completely for self-defense, the slow-but-sure turtle is an intriguing reptile. Terry VanDeWalle provides a complete description of each species, both male and female, along with distinguishing characteristics for fourteen subspecies, information about range and habitat, and natural history notes about behavior, hibernation, diet, and nesting. Two panels devoted to hatchlings provide short descriptions of the young of each species as well as photographs of some commonly seen young turtles.

This text explores how economists and public policy makers are re-thinking the way in which governments monitor, measure and influence an economy in an unbounded global environment where output is largely intangible and organisations are becoming are becoming increasingly non-national in scope. Through a collection of seminal articles written by prominent business people, academics, and public policy makers, this three anthology examines the key issues surrounding the economic impact of knowledge-based growth.

This book was released on 2004-04-08 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The underlying theme of this book is that a widespread, taxonomically diverse group of animals, important both from ecological and human resource perspectives, remains poorly understood and in delcine, while receiving scant attention from the ecological and conservation community. This volume proposes a comprehensive overview of the world's river turtles' ecology, conservation, and management. It begins with a categorization of taxa which inhabit flowing water habitats followed by information on their evolutionary and physical diversity and biogeography. Within the framework of ecology, the authors discuss the composition of river turtle communities in different types of lotic habitats and regions, population dynamics, movements, reproductive characteristics and behavior, predators, and feeding relationships. In a conservation and management section, the authors identify and evaluate the nature and intensity of factors which threaten river turtle survival--almost all of which involve direct human exploitation or indirect effects of human induced habitat alteration and degradation. They then list and evaluate the various schemes which have been proposed or employed to halt declines and restore populations, and make recommendations for future management plans for specific species and regions. In closing, they state their viewpoint concerning future research directions and priorities, and an evaluation of future prospects for survival of the world's river turtle species.
