Book excerpt: Madison Grant traces the ethnography of the North American continent. Grant details the history of various ethnic groups on the continent, from Colonial times to the mid 20th century. Central is the dominant role that the Nordic race (particularly Anglo-Saxon and Ulster-Scots) played in the conquest and founding of the United States.Madison Grant, author of The Conquest of a Continent: or The Expansion of Races in America (1933), and, previously, The Passing of the Great Race (1916) was much discussed and reviewed in his own time, and into the 21st century by both detractors and admirers, whether in qualified or very strident terms. This prominent naturalist, zoologist, and benefactor still casts a shadow over many aspects of the human condition and the issues of "race," national identity, immigration, and the potential role of scientific methods in improving racial stock: points of contention that have never faded. He is a progressive and a man of science; an elitist; and a conservationist (or "environmentalist" in contemporary parlance). In this, what his colleague, the paleontologist Henry Fairfield Osborn, called in the introduction, "the first racial history of America," Grant provides a consistent theme--Nordicism and the need to preserve the Nordic racial type in America--but can be contradictory and inconsistent in finding the means to achieve this ultimate conservationist agenda.

Book excerpt: 2018 Reprint of 1933 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition software. Illustrated with Maps. A leading conservationist in the United States, Madison Grant's preoccupation with biodiversity was not limited to wildlife, but also extended to humans, particularly where that biodiversity intersected with the wider sweep of history, its meaning and interpretation, and government policy. Grant provides here a racial and ethnic history of the European settlement of North America, spanning from the ancient nations of Europe to the United States of his day. His thesis was that the United States was settled mostly by Northwestern Europeans, particularly English and Ulster Scots. To his mind, this relative homogeneity, plus the generally high quality of these enterprising settlers, conferred upon the new nation its prosperity, cohesion, stability, and defining cultural characteristics. Grant was concerned that then recent waves of immigration from poorer parts of Europe would lead to social instability, division, economic decline, and a growing underclass. He also thought that the failure to deal with problems left by slavery stored trouble for the future. Grant's represents today an unfashionable opinion, and his framework of analysis--not to mention his Nordic bias--makes him seem biased and outdated. Yet, he remains historically important. The old arguments have not gone away: as in Europe, they are being updated and revisited in the United States, which is now more socially unstable and more divided than previously thought possible.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of Conquest, the Story of American Expansion, Through Arms and Diplomacy When the "Free Quakers" of Philadelphia inscribed on their new meeting-house "Erected in the year of our Lord, 1783, of the Empire 8," they were not "Jingos" or "imperialists," but believers in God and in the growth of the United States of America. Among these Friends, who had drawn sword for their country, were my ancestors and kinsmen. It is not wonderful that their descendant inherits also their view. To-day there are those who read the words "empire" and "expansion" in the same light. They see in the events of the pivotal year of 1898 the Divine hand, and they hear in the new developments fresh calls to duty. On history is based surest prophecy. Those who are most familiar with the story of our country will be best fitted to comprehend intelligently the part they are called upon to play in the future. With emphasis upon the original meaning of the word "conquest," I have in this volume told the story of our national expansion and of the triumphs of American arms and diplomacy from July 4, 1776, when we began to be a corporate nation or empire, until this first year of Greater America. Book excerpt: By using documented historical fact, Madison Grant proved that the colonial stock who opened up America for settlement were primarily of Northwestern European stock, with particular emphasis on its English and Ulster Scots roots. He goes on to show how America reached its greatest degree of racial homogeneity in 1860 and that later immigration from all parts of the world was undermining this founding stock. Grant's predictions of what would happen if unlimited immigration was allowed once again, and if the existing racial problems left by slavery and illegal Mexican immigration were not addressed, make sobering reading. Contains all the original maps and two new appendices which details how the Anti-Defamation League sought to suppress this book; and a 2006 study which showed that the number of Americans born with blue eyes had dropped from 1 in 2 in 1900 to less than 1 in 6 in 2000-proof of the accuracy of Grant's predictions that unlimited immigration would lead to the de-Nordicization of America. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Discovery and Conquest of America The present Edition of the celebrated History of the Discovery and Conquest of America, by Dr. Robertson, has not been materially abridged, but only condensed to about four-fifths of the original work, so as to bring it into one volume of The English Classic Library. Books IX. and X. are wholly omitted, as they are confined to an account of the first settlement of Virginia and New England, and were not originally published by the Author, nor are they connected with his 'History of the Discovery and Conquest of America, ' but are merely fragments of a larger work which he contemplated on British America. The Notes and Illustrations, which were added to support the authority of the text, are also omitted, as it is presumed the general reader will he satisfied to be guided by such a correct and impartial historian as Dr. Robertson. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Conquest of Arid America IN the summer of 1899, on a remote ranch in the desert country of Northeastern California, twelve miles from the nearest house (and no one living there, as my wife caustically remarked) I put the finishing touches to the first edition of this book. Now, six years to a day, in my library at San Diego, with its seaward gable commanding a view of a populous town and a wide landscape of bay, ocean, mountains, islands, and the bold promontory of Point Loma, I finish my revision of a new and enlarged edition which brings the story of Arid America down to date. There is a curious coincidence between the changed scene and conditions of my work at these two periods and the change in the fortunes of the Cause with which I deal. The irrigation movement of 1899 was compara tively remote from the great heart of the Nation, domi ciled in distant deserts, a long way from the nearest house (and almost nobody lived there, too), while the irrigation movement of 1905 is planted in the heart of populous towns and intimately related to the com merce of the world.
