Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the journey taken by the Canadian Province of Our Lady of the Missions (RNDM) from their establishment in Manitoba in 1898 until 2008, when the congregation as a whole redefined its mission and vision. Using archival research conducted in Winnipeg, Manitoba as well as in England and Italy, and incorporating oral interviews with RNDM sisters, this book explores the historical work of sisters in schools and the part they played in the educational state in formation. The details of the congregation's activity in schools show how the sisters' educational work was related to the social characteristics of the communities (e.g., those of French Canadian settlers, British immigrants, the M?tis population, and continental European immigrants), first in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, and later in Ontario and Quebec. The Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions examines the impact of Vatican II in the 1960s, and into the 2000s, as well as the dismantling of neo-scholasticism and the process of secularization of consciousness in society at large. The emerging issues led the congregation and the province to examine their individual and collective identity at the intersection of feminist theology, eco-spirituality, and a critique of western cosmology.

Book Synopsis Thinking Things Through by : Andrew Murray
Download or read book Thinking Things Through written by Andrew Murray and published by ATF Press. This book was released on 2012-11-30 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life of a philosopher is foremost the life of thinking but it is also the life of imagination that dreams of and investigates possibilities that might not otherwise have been raised. The life of a Christian is the life of Faith, Hope and Charity, and so it both looks to things beyond this world and regards this world with compassion. The two can work together. Faith softens reason, and reason sharpens Faith. Imagination finds new ways to articulate in concrete circumstances what has belonged to long traditions of thought. These essays cover a wide range of topics either by way of simple reflection on life or in response to issues that arose around the time of their writing. The period of their writing was a varied one. Life looked so stable in the mid-nineties that we contemplated Australia becoming a republic and sought Aboriginal reconciliation. It remained uncomplicated at the time of the Olympic Games in 2000 but became troubled by political events and by the terrorist attacks of 2001. The essays respond to the issues of this time. Four essays not published in the Weekly have been added to take note of more recent changes that have taken place in the Church and in our world.

Book Synopsis Jean-Claude Colin by : Justin Taylor
Download or read book Jean-Claude Colin written by Justin Taylor and published by ATF Press. This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 1000 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1830, at the age of forty, Jean-Claude Colin accepted the call of his colleagues to take charge of the Society of Mary (Marists). He had joined this project as a seminarian in Lyons, France, in 1816, along with Marcellin Champagnat, future founder of the Marist teaching brothers. Since ordination, he had been an assistant priest at Cerdon (photo below), preached revival missions in rural districts and been principal of a high school-seminary. Colin always insisted that he was only a temporary superior until someone more capable could take over. Yet, by the time he resigned in 1854, he had obtained papal approval of the priests' branch, established the Society firmly in France, especially in education, and sent fifteen expeditions of missionary priests and brothers to the remote and scattered islands of the southwest Pacific. There they planted the Catholic Church in New Zealand, Wallis and Futuna, Tonga, Samoa, Fiji and New Caledonia. Between his resignation and his death in 1875, Colin wrote Constitutions for the priests and brothers of the Society of Mary and for the Marist sisters. He also left a rich spiritual teaching. For this achievement, the Society regards him, despite his reluctance, as its Founder.
Book Synopsis Steadfast Charity by : Mary Sweeney SC
Download or read book Steadfast Charity written by Mary Sweeney SC and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-16 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steadfast Charity covers the history of the Sisters of Charity of Halifax during the years 1972—2002 as the congregation met the challenges of Vatican II and created new models for living vowed religious life. New ways of praying, of being community, of giving service, of understanding the vows—all required trust, openness, risk and a willingness to let go of security. As the congregation responded to the call to renewal, little did the sisters realize how much would change. In this book, Sisters of Charity Mary Sweeney, Martha Westwater, Elaine Nolan and Julia Heslin explore these times by examining the life and practices of the sisters and by contextualizing decisions that were made by the governing bodies during those years. They tell the story of an organization and its evolution as a part of the “Church in the Modern World.” The authors offer an inside view of a congregation which, in navigating its transformation through a time of upheaval in the Church and in the world, remained faithful to its purpose, as stated in its Constitutions: “to give joyful witness to love.”
