Book excerpt: This first annual report on the "Condition of Education in Ohio 2004" provides in-depth data about the students who are served by Ohio's elementary and secondary educational system and how well they are performing. This report provides educators, policymakers and researchers with a comprehensive picture of Ohio's kindergarten through grade 12 system. By openly sharing this data, the Ohio Department of Education and the State Board of Education hope to inform state and local discussions about the policies, programs and practices that influence teaching and learning. In particular, this report focuses on the results attained by Ohio's public school students. Ohio's social and economic future depends upon the state's capacity to provide a high-quality of public education to all of its citizens. It advances the discussion of student achievement in Ohio by sharing information about the students served, indicators of their academic performances, and information about the strategies employed through statewide policies, programs and practices. The first section, "Who Is Being Served by Public Education in Ohio?", examines student populations in Ohio's public and private schools. The second section, "How Well Are Ohio Students Achieving?", provides a wealth of information about student achievement in Ohio. This section is followed by, "Are Ohio's Students Ready for College?", which focuses on how well Ohio prepares students for higher education and careers. The fourth and final section, "How Is Ohio Supporting Improvement in Teaching and Learning?", centers on the programs and support that Ohio is implementing to positively affect student performance, especially the accountability system as a tool for focusing on improved teaching and learning. (Contains 23 tables, 88 figures, 7 resources, and a glossary.).

Book excerpt: The "Condition of Teacher Supply and Demand in Ohio, 2004" study provides the first attempt to both address "what is happening" in the teaching profession as well as provide an explanation for "why the problems are occurring." This study builds on information from existing databases on student enrollment, teacher workforce demographics, teacher attrition and mobility, teaching vacancies, the pipeline for new teachers in higher education, and staffing issues in community schools. For each of the issues presented in this report, quantitative data drawn from analysis of existing databases and qualitative data from interviews of teachers and administrators is provided to describe and explain the area of concern. Accompanying this report are two data appendices. The first presents the quantitative data and follows the format of last year's report. The second appendix presents the qualitative findings. This appendix presents the results of focus groups and individual interviews conducted with a sample of approximately 100 teachers and 20 school district administrators across the state. (Contains 24 tables and 4 figures.).

Book excerpt: The Ohio Board of Regents has prepared this document to provide detailed but easy to use information about higher education and the role that it plays in shaping Ohio's economy. The document tries to anticipate questions that might be asked of policymakers by their constituents. Information needed by policymakers to answer those questions, has been assembled by gathering data from a variety of well documented sources. Ohio's higher education community is comprised of more than 150 degree-granting colleges and universities, including 38 public colleges and universities that are individually governed by their own boards of trustees. Ohio's public colleges and universities enroll more than 449,000 students; more than 127,000 enroll in independent colleges and universities. This document is divided into three primary areas--higher education, Ohio's economy, and the benefits of advanced learning. At the beginning of each section, key points summarize and highlight significant facts of the section. Each section's content offers statistics and facts, as well as sources to use for more in-depth research. An index and customer satisfaction survey are also included.

This book was released on 2005 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fifth annual Performance Report for Ohio's Colleges and Universities uses a variety of data and data sources to describe higher education in Ohio from students' academic preparation to learning environments, student progress, degree achievement, and licensure and employment outcomes. The report also provides a wealth of information about research and job-training activities as well as basic financial information about costs, state support, and financial aid provided to students. This year's Performance Report includes new outcomes measures related to college-level course taking by high school students, transfer outcomes, and need-based and merit-based financial aid awards. The sections comprise the Performance Report for 2005 as follows: Section One summarizes outcomes at the statewide and sector levels and includes comparisons to national benchmarks when such benchmarks are available; Section Two presents the mission statements of the community and technical college sectors and individual mission statements for each public university; and Section Three presents brief statistical profiles of Ohio's public and private higher education institutions. Data analysts, members of the media, local policy makers, and legislative staff will find the data in the institutional detail report valuable to learn more about specific campuses and how a specific campus's data compare to sector or state data.
