Book excerpt: An introduction to the economic equilibrium model is given and it is demonstrated that a path method can be used to compute equilibria for pure exchange economies in a nonlinear setting. Next, a model is described for an economy in which the utility functions are piecewise linear and the consumption and production sets are polyhedral. It is shown that an equilibrium for this economy is the solution to a system of bilinear equations subject to certain linear inequality and complementarity constraints. Two approaches are discussed for computing equilibria for such economies. The first is the bilinear complementarity algorithm (BCA) and the second is the homotopy retraction algorithm (HRA). Convergence proofs are given for both methods using the general theory for path methods described above. No conclusion could be drawn as to which algorithm was superior, but both performed well enough that it appears that much larger equilibrium problems also can be solved efficiently by these methods.

Book excerpt: The computation of economic equilibria, given specific supply and demand functions, is a well-established problem normally treated by fixed point methods or other iterative schemes which converge to a point satisfying the equilibrium criteria. In cases where there are several points which satisfy the equilibrium criteria, these methods will produce a solution distinguished only by the characteristics of the method itself and the starting point used. For some applications, it is desirable to characterize a particular equilibrium point in the presence of multiple equilibria. In this paper, economies are considered with demand and supply characteristics which can be described in terms of separable functions (i.e., functions which are sums of functions each of a single variable) or in terms of functions which can be made separable by introducing new variables and equations. A recently developed branch and bound algorith, is applied to the problem of maximizing any of several separable objective functions (consumer surplus, producer surplus and total surplus are used, although others could be defined) subject to the equilibrium criteria, thus producing a particular equilibrium point. If there is more than one equilibrium point solution for a particular objective function, the branch and bound procedure will produce all such solutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computing Equilibria and Fixed Points is devoted to the computation of equilibria, fixed points and stationary points. This volume is written with three goals in mind: (i) To give a comprehensive introduction to fixed point methods and to the definition and construction of Gröbner bases; (ii) To discuss several interesting applications of these methods in the fields of general equilibrium theory, game theory, mathematical programming, algebra and symbolic computation; (iii) To introduce several advanced fixed point and stationary point theorems. These methods and topics should be of interest not only to economists and game theorists concerned with the computation and existence of equilibrium outcomes in economic models and cooperative and non-cooperative games, but also to applied mathematicians, computer scientists and engineers dealing with models of highly nonlinear systems of equations (or polynomial equations).

Book excerpt: This advanced textbook aims at providing a simple but fully operational introduction to applied general equilibrium. General equilibrium is the backbone of modern economic analysis and as such generation after generation of economics students are introduced to it. As an analytical tool in economics, general equilibrium provides one of the most complete views of an economy since it incorporates all economic agents (households, firms, government, foreign sector) in an integrated way that is compatible with microtheory and microdata. The integration of theory and data handling is required for successful modeling but it requires a double ability that is not found in standard books. With this book we aim at filling the gap and provide advanced students with the required tools, from the building of consistent and applicable general equilibrium models to the interpretation of the results that ensue from the adoption of policies. The topics include: model design, model development, computer code examples, calibration and data adjustments, practical policy examples.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a systematic approach to problems in economic equilibrium based on fixed-point arguments and rigorous set-theoretical (axiomatic) methods. It describes the highest-level research on the classical theme, fixed points and economic equilibria, in the theory of mathematical economics, and also presents basic results in this area, especially in the general equilibrium theory and non-co-operative game theory. The arguments also contain distinguishable developments of the main theme in the homology theory for general topological spaces, in the model theory and mathematical logic, and in the methodology and philosophy of social sciences. It can thus serve as a graduate-level textbook on mathematical economics as well as an advanced monograph for students and researchers who are concerned about rigorous mathematical treatment in the social sciences.
