Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Composition of the Book of Isaiah in the Light of History and Archaeology The three lectures contained in this volume, which were delivered in the summer of 1909 as the second annual course of the Schweich Lectures, are an attempt to tell in a simple way the story of the book of Isaiah, and are not to be regarded as a commentary upon the book. In many cases I have been content merely to indicate, by means of quotations, that view of the origin and date of particular sections which commends itself to me, and I have made no attempt to give in detail the arguments for the theory which I have thus suggested. Had I done this, the length of the lectures would have been enormously increased, and the amount of detail would, in all probability, have tended to distract attention from the points which I desire particularly to make prominent. I have intentionally ab stained from multiplying references, especially hen referring to uncontroverted facts which are not of vital importance to my argu ment. Although no discussion of the problems of the book of Isaiah can be altogether adequate which is not based on the original Hebrew, I have endeavoured, as far as possible, to keep before myself the needs of English readers. Johns, Litt.D., Master of S. Catharine's College, and formerly Fellow and Lecturer of Queens' College, Cambridge, has not only allowed me to consult him on many occasions on questions of Assyriology, but has also read through the first lecture in manuscript. To my friend and colleague, Mr. A. B. Cook, M.A., Fellow and Lecturer of Queens' College, Cambridge, and Reader in Classical Archaeology, I am indebted for much information on Greek archaeology and religion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Isaiah: In Fifteen Studies Few books of the Old Testament have in modern times received the attention which has been accorded the book of Isaiah. An unusual flood of critical and expository literature has recently appeared, to which no careful student of the book would deny his very great indebted ness. Yet it must he confessed that the divisive criticism of Isaiah has developed into a sort of reckless surgery, until it has become well-nigh impossible to find a proof text in support of a reasonably conservative position, whose genuineness is not disputed by some one. It almost seems sometimes that doubt were in competition with doubt. As Whitehouse remarks in opposition to Lagarde, Duhm and Marti, who dissect Isa. As Edom is thus eliminated in one clause, it is necessary to operate on Bozrah in the other. (new Century Bible, Isaiah, vol: II., p. 303, II. The same is true of hosts of other passages. Book excerpt: The study deals with the theological message and composition of the Book of Isaiah and promotes a thesis that an early Jewish reception history helps us to find perspectives to understand them. This study treats the following themes among others: 1 Hezekiah as Immanuel was an important theme in the reception as can be seen in Chronicles and Ben Sira as well as in rabbinical writings. The central event which makes Hezekiah such an important figure, was the annihilation of the Assyrian army as recounted in Isaiah 36-37. 2 The Book of Isaiah was interpreted in apocalyptic milieu as the Animal Apocalypse and Daniel show. Even though the Qumran writings do not provide any coherent way to interpret Isaianic passages its textual evidence shows how the community has found from the Book of Isaiah different concepts to characterize the division of the Jewish community to the righteous and sinful ones (cf. Isa 65-66). 3 Ezra and Nehemiah received inspiration from the theological themes of Isaianic texts of Levitical singers which were later edited in the Book of Isaiah by scribes. The formation of the Book of Isaiah then went in its own way and its theology became different from that in the Book of Ezra–Nehemiah.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Isaiah Chronologically Arranged: An Amended Version With Historical and Critical Introductions and Explanatory Notes The present work is a fragment of a much larger one planned by the editor several years ago. He was induced to abridge his scheme by the urgent necessity which appeared to exist for works of moderate size and accurate information on the most important books of the Old Testament. He trusts, therefore, that teachers of theology may find this attempt a convenient substratum for their own more extended instruction, and at the same time ventures to hope that the independent researches, which have accompanied the writing of every part of it, will recommend it to the attention of professional scholars. The object of this edition is not in the least connected with the recent movement for a revision of the Authorized Version: - it is simply to restore the probable meaning of Isaiah, so far as this can be expressed in appropriate English. The basis of the version is naturally the revised translation of 1611, but no scruple has been felt in introducing alterations, wherever the true sense of the prophecies appeared to require it. These might indeed have been largely increased, but the affectionate reverence with which the Authorized Version is so justly regarded, appeared to demand that changes should not be made for any but comparatively grave reasons.
