In The Lost World, Professor Challenger and reporter Edward Malone found dinosaurs living in the Amazon. In The Poison Belt, they witnessed chaos as Earth passed through a cloud of poison gas. Now, with the help of Peerless Jones, an expert in Artesian boring, they seek to test the professor’s Echinus theory . . . Professor Challenger believes that Earth is a sentient being. Like the sea urchin, it is protected by an outer layer, unaware of what happens on its surface. Challenger wants to dig beneath Earth’s protective layer, its crust, and touch the creature inside to let it know humanity is here. But what the men find underground is quite surprising . . .

Book excerpt: George Edward Challenger, better known as Professor Challenger, was a fictional character in a series of fantasy and science fiction stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Unlike Conan Doyle's self-controlled, analytical character, Sherlock Holmes, Professor Challenger was an aggressive, hot-tempered, dominating figure. He was also a pretentious and self-righteous scientific jack-of-all-trades. Challenger was, in many ways, rude, crude, and without social conscience or inhibition. Yet he was a man capable of great loyalty and his love of his wife was all encompassing. Within these pages are all five Professor Challenger stories: Two novels (The Lost World and The Land of Mist), one novella (The Poison Belt) and two short stories (The Disintegration Machine and When the World Screamed). A salways, Conan Doyle brings the characters - and his world - alive! He pulls us in with them, until we are truly worried for them! And in these five tales, the danger is truly great. From a land where danger lurks on land, water and air - from creatures which should be extinct, to an apocalyptic danger threatening our entire planet, to a scientific creation with truly horrifying possible misuses. And though less dangerous, no less incredible is the tale of spiritualism, and how it can be cruelly used for profit, and a tale that might make you think just how terrible our abuse of our planet might be! Professor Challenger may be gone, but these exciting tales, from the rich, imaginative mind of one of the world's greatest writers, remain to entertain us! Come along for the ride!

The book is available in a leather-bound Deluxe Hardcover with slipcase edition which is stamped with a raptor on the front cover in red foil as well as a trade paperback edition. Strange lights on the moors, weird noises in the night, cattle disappearing; these are more than enough to prompt Malone's newspaper to send him to investigate. And when his old companion Professor Challenger also goes missing, the hunt is on. The trail leads Malone to the British military, and to a research station in the Bristol Channel, where an old terror proves, once again, that some things are not meant to be contained.

Join the enigmatic and forceful Professor Challenger into the terrifying world of dinosaurs roaming wild. Adventure and mayhem, with humor sprinkled throughout, provide for a thrilling 1912 adventure through the jungles of South America that every reader should take. The Lost World, By Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, The Lost World is a novel released in 1912 by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle concerning an expedition to a plateau in the Amazon basin of South America where prehistoric animals (dinosaurs and other extinct creatures) still survive. It was originally published serially in the popular Strand Magazine and illustrated by New-Zealand-born artist Harry Rountree during the months of April-November 1912. The character of Professor Challenger was introduced in this book. The novel also describes a war between indigenous people and a vicious tribe of ape-like creatures. Edward Malone, a reporter for the Daily Gazette, goes to his news editor, McArdle, to procure a dangerous and adventurous mission in order to impress the woman he loves, Gladys Hungerton. He is sent to interview Professor George Edward Challenger, who has assaulted four or five other journalists, to determine if his claims about his trip to South America are true. After assaulting Malone, Challenger reveals his discovery of dinosaurs in South America. Having been ridiculed for years, he invites Malone on a trip to prove his story, along with Professor Summerlee, another scientist qualified to examine any evidence, and Lord John Roxton, an adventurer who knows the Amazon and several years prior to the events of the book helped end slavery by robber barons in South America. They reach the plateau with the aid of Indian guides, who are superstitiously scared of the area.
