Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This richly illustrated book provides an unsurpassed overview of Islamic art and architecture from the seventh to the thirteenth centuries, a time of the formation of a new artistic culture and its first, medieval, flowering in the vast area from the Atlantic to India. Inspired by Ettinghausen and Grabar’s original text, this book has been completely rewritten and updated to take into account recent information and methodological advances. The volume focuses special attention on the development of numerous regional centers of art in Spain, North Africa, Egypt, Syria, Anatolia, Iraq, and Yemen, as well as the western and northeastern provinces of Iran. It traces the cultural and artistic evolution of such centers in the seminal early Islamic period and examines the wealth of different ways of creating a beautiful environment. The book approaches the arts with new classifications of architecture and architectural decoration, the art of the object, and the art of the book. With many new illustrations, often in color, this volume broadens the picture of Islamic artistic production and discusses objects in a wide range of media, including textiles, ceramics, metal, and wood. The book incorporates extensive accounts of the cultural contexts of the arts and defines the originality of each period. A final chapter explores the impact of Islamic art on the creativity of non-Muslims within the Islamic realm and in areas surrounding the Muslim world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An authoritative survey situating some of the Western world’s most renowned buildings within a millennium of Islamic history Some of the most outstanding examples of world architecture, such as the Mosque of Córdoba, the ceiling of the Cappella Palatina in Palermo, the Giralda tower in Seville, and the Alhambra Palace in Granada, belong to the Western Islamic tradition. This architectural style flourished for over a thousand years along the southern and western shores of the Mediterranean—between Tunisia and Spain—from the 8th century through the 19th, blending new ideas with local building practices from across the region. Jonathan M. Bloom’s Architecture of the Islamic West introduces readers to the full scope of this vibrant tradition, presenting both famous and little-known buildings in six countries in North Africa and southern Europe. It is richly illustrated with photographs, specially commissioned architectural plans, and historical documents. The result is a personally guided tour of Islamic architecture led by one of the finest scholars in the field and a powerful testament to Muslim cultural achievement.

Book excerpt: "This book is the published record of the proceedings of one of the first conferences held under the auspices of the newly established Centre for the Advanced Study of the Arab World. The Centre, set up in 2006 with a £5 million grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the Economic and Social Sciences Research Council, comprises a consortium of the universities of Edinburgh, Manchester and Durham whose brief is to secure long-term improvements in the teaching of the Arabic language and of Middle Eastern studies in the United Kingdom. The conference, held in Edinburgh in August 2007 under the title 'Arab art, architecture and material culture', was organised by Margaret Graves, then a Ph.D. student of Islamic art history at the University of Edinburgh. The intention was to use the conference as a way of encouraging younger scholars of Islamic art history to present their ideas before an audience of their peers, and to highlight the variety of research currently being undertaken into Islamic art, principally in British universities - though a few speakers from abroad also contributed. Twelve of the participants provided final versions of the papers that they had delivered at the conference, and these have been expertly edited by Dr Margaret Graves in the present volume. These twelve papers fall quite naturally into categories defined by medium. Half of them deal with the so-called "minor", "decorative" or "applied" arts - the uncertain nomenclature betrays a long outdated but still persistent Eurocentric taxonomy from which Islamic art historians have still not entirely freed themselves, and which embodies a hierarchical distinction between architecture, painting and sculpture (a notional first division) and all other arts and crafts (a notional second division). This distinction simply does not work in the field of Islamic art, where such media as metalwork, textiles and ceramics effortlessly claim major status. These media re the subject matter of the first six papers in this collection, and it is entirely appropriate that they are so well represented here. The second half of the book comprises three papers on the built environment and three on the arts of the book." -- introduction, p. v.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring new patterns with detailed explanatory texts, this revised edition is an inspirational guide for craftspeople and artists alike. The marvels of Islamic patterns—the most recognizable visual expression of Islamic art and architecture—are not just a beautiful accident. The ancient practitioners of this craft used traditional methods of measurement to create dazzling geometric compositions, often based on the repetition of a single pattern. The results are magnificent in their beauty and awe-inspiring in their execution. Now, with the aid of this book, everyone can learn how to master this ancient art and create their own intricate patterns or re-create classic examples. All that is needed is a pencil, a ruler, a compass, and a steady hand. Technical tips demonstrate the geometric basics such as how to create designs from one of the foundational “family” shapes: a square, hexagon, or pentagon. This is followed by step-by-step instructions for reproducing some of the best examples of geometric patterns. Islamic Geometric Patterns contains twenty-three geometric patterns and brief histories of some of the most famous and beautiful Islamic art and architecture from around the world. This revised edition features seven new patterns from locations including: Ak Medrese in Nigde, Turkey; Chellah necropolis in Rabat, Morocco; Shah Jahan Mosque in Thatta, Pakistan; the Tomb of I’timad-ud-Daulah in Agra, India; the Alcazar in Seville, Spain; Zaouia Moulay Idriss II in Fes, Morocco; and Darwish Pasha Mosque in Damascus, Syria.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since precious few architectural drawings and no theoretical treatises on architecture remain from the premodern Islamic world, the Timurid pattern scroll in the collection of the Topkapi Palace Museum Library is an exceedingly rich and valuable source of information. In the course of her in-depth analysis of this scroll dating from the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century, Gülru Necipoğlu throws new light on the conceptualization, recording, and transmission of architectural design in the Islamic world between the tenth and sixteenth centuries. Her text has particularly far-reaching implications for recent discussions on vision, subjectivity, and the semiotics of abstract representation. She also compares the Islamic understanding of geometry with that found in medieval Western art, making this book particularly valuable for all historians and critics of architecture. The scroll, with its 114 individual geometric patterns for wall surfaces and vaulting, is reproduced entirely in color in this elegant, large-format volume. An extensive catalogue includes illustrations showing the underlying geometries (in the form of incised “dead” drawings) from which the individual patterns are generated. An essay by Mohammad al-Asad discusses the geometry of the muqarnas and demonstrates by means of CAD drawings how one of the scroll’s patterns could be used co design a three-dimensional vault.
