Conjuration for the Book, Grimoire of Pope Honorius Description: The Grimoire of Pope Honorius is the first and most important of the French 'black magic' grimoires which proliferated across Europe in the 17th-19th centuries. Combining a grimoire of conjurations to demons of the four directions and seven days of the week with a Book of Secrets full of simple charms, the Grimoire of Pope Honorius was second only to the Key of Solomon in the influence it exerted on magicians, charmers and cunning-folk in both rural and urban France. This grimoire also played a role in social events which rocked France, being used in the Affair of the Poisons which scandalised the French royal court in 1679, and by the young priest who assassinated the archbishop of Paris in 1857. The Complete Grimoire of Pope Honorius contains material translated from all four of the different French editions of the Grimoire of Pope Honorius, including the complete text of one manuscript version never before seen in English (Wellcome 4666), and a new translation of the later corrupted German version of 1845. All of the material and its variations found in the five different editions of the Grimoire of Pope Honorius is contained in this work, presenting the entire corpus of this grimoire in print for the first time. In addition to tracing much of the material to sources such as the Heptameron, the works of Agrippa and earlier religious texts for the first time, the derivation of much of the material into later grimoires including the Grimorium Verum, the Grand Grimoire/Red Dragon and the Black Dragon is clearly demonstrated. As well as charms for health, wealth, sex and protection, the Grimoire of Pope Honorius also contains a substantial number of agrarian charms by the Norman magician Guidon for protecting livestock, emphasising the popular rural use of such charms until at least the 19th century. The corpus of charms comes from diverse sources, including Scot's Discoverie of Witchcraft (1584), and some like the Letter of St Anthony can be dated back to at least the 13th century. Including numerous illustrations, and tables tracing the derivation of the material through the different editions and into other grimoires, the Complete Grimoire of Pope Honorius demonstrates the versatility and significance of this grimoire, cutting past outdated misperceptions to a viewpoint which reflects more accurately the position of the Grimoire of Pope Honorius in the development of magic since the seventeenth century.

While its name is derived from the 13th century Grimoire of Honorius, its content is closer to later grimories like the Key of Solomon and Grimorium Verum. Edited and translated into English by Edmund Kelly The Grimoire of Pope Honorius Is a book that holds its place in occult literature.

Bits of its teachings, such as the use of the magic whistle for summoning spirits, are alluded to in other texts. Another key element of its ritual, the elaborate “Seal of God,” has been found in texts and amulets throughout Europe. Interest in The Sworn Book of Honorius has grown in recent years, yet no modern translations have been attempted—until now. Purporting to preserve the magic of Solomon in the face of intense persecution by religious authorities, this text includes one of the oldest and most detailed magic rituals. It contains a complete system of magic including how to attain the divine vision, communicate with holy angels, and control aerial, earthly, and infernal spirits for practical gain. Largely ignored by historians until recently, this text is an important witness to the transmission of Kabbalah and Jewish mysticism to European Hermeticists.

Book excerpt: What is a grimoire? The word has a familiar ring to many people, particularly as a consequence of such popular television dramas as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Charmed. But few people are sure exactly what it means. Put simply, grimoires are books of spells that were first recorded in the Ancient Middle East and which have developed and spread across much of the Western Hemisphere and beyond over the ensuing millennia. At their most benign, they contain charms and remedies for natural and supernatural ailments and advice on contacting spirits to help find treasures and protect from evil. But at their most sinister they provide instructions on how to manipulate people for corrupt purposes and, worst of all, to call up and make a pact with the Devil. Both types have proven remarkably resilient and adaptable and retain much of their relevance and fascination to this day. But the grimoire represents much more than just magic. To understand the history of grimoires is to understand the spread of Christianity, the development of early science, the cultural influence of the print revolution, the growth of literacy, the impact of colonialism, and the expansion of western cultures across the oceans. As this book richly demonstrates, the history of grimoires illuminates many of the most important developments in European history over the last two thousand years.

Book excerpt: It is acknowledged Church doctrine that sorcery is the specific domain of the Devil. Yet occult tales are liberally sprinkled throughout the Old and New Testaments, from the spirit-invoking Witch of Endor to the story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. Throughout its 2,000 year history, the Church has spawned numerous mystical religious orders, like the Knights Templar, that may have been engaged in supernatural pursuits, while no fewer than three popes were believed to be involved in occult practices. Christian scriptures tell us that the occult is real, while Catholic priests are thought to have spiritual power over ghosts and evil entities. But if a priest can cast out demons during the rites of exorcism, does it not imply he has the ability to summon them as well? In this eye-opening, provocative work, leading occult scholar Simon examines the Church's unspoken relationship with forbidden magic by exploring the infamous seventeenth-century document considered by some to be the most demonic of all occult texts—the Grimoire of Pope Honorius III—and illuminates the Vatican's darkest hidden corners.

Book excerpt: The Grimoire of Pope Honorius is so named because it purports to be a short collection of prayers and invocations with rituals designed to call forth demons from Hell, allowing a holy conjurer to enslave them to their own designs. While it is not certain that Honorius is its author (and it may take its name from the "Sworn Book of Honorius" instead) it is well known within the occult world as a grimoire worth pursuing nonetheless. The lengthy invocations call upon various names ascribed to YHWH the God of the Hebrews- through this process, and other ritualism, it is thus claimed possible to draw forth even Lucifer himself from the abyssal regions for the purposes of one who is worthy and holy enough to command such powers.

But, it was written by Honorius the Magus, as the original text states. This is THE evocational grimoire for Angelic Spirits and Forces. Filled with rare powerful Angelic names and rituals. Most only seen in this grimoire. It is said of this book that it is the book by which life is renewed..a scared book of angels, and the wonderful understanding of which the Master Honorius of the Thebans did provide. This is said to be a book which will also preserves health, it is a book which will enable one to see god, and this is the book which one may use to communicate with angels, ad become master of demons.A complete grimoire for working with angels as was practiced in the medieval era. This is the IGOS Robert Blanchard translation of this classic grimoire, in another words, the best available for the serious occultist. Bad translations taken from bad sources mean failure for the practitioner. I even heard of magicians being possessed because they used poorly translated grimoires, some these have been changed deliberately to depower positive occultists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Grand Grimoire is a foundational book of magic from the 19th century. This translation is the most accurate ever, and is presented with parallel French & English text. A comprehensive introduction covers the development of magic, the history of the grimoire, the witch trials & the Inquisition, the themes & key insights, and much more. The complete translation of a contemporary novel that provides relevant social context to the grimoire is also included. The foreword is by noted author and occultist Baal Kadmon. This edition incorporates the seals and images of the spirits of the Grand Grimoire, many never seen before. This will aid the magician in concentration and visualization of the spirits, so that they may be evoked for practical purposes. The grimoire describes the process of evoking and making pacts with Lucifuge Rofocale, the 'Infernal Prime Minister," who is above the hierarchy of twenty-six other spirits in this book. The grimoire also contains a process of necromancy and a collection of spells. This is a comprehensive resource for scholars, occultists, practicing magicians, witches and wizards. It is a valuable work both for its historical value, and its magical use. Our introduction contains notes on the various items used in the Grimoire, such as the herb Verbena, the Bloodstone, the Blasting Rod, and the Magic Circle. We have identified the actual items referenced in the Grimoire, which will be a significant leap in scholarship and magical practice, and we believe, give this grimoire a reestablished significance in occult circles. While numerous translations exist, as this book is in the public domain, we have not found any translations that have rigorously researched the terms and translated all parts of the content, from the interspersed Latin, Greek and the base French text. The authors are practicing magicians and researchers. From the Foreword by Baal Kadmon, "The beauty of this translation is not only its accuracy, but also that it is in a clear interlinear format. This provides the reader with the opportunity to see the original text, side-by-side with the English translation, something that does not exist in any other edition of this text. This alone is an invaluable benefit to the reader. However, this is not a mere translation of the text. It is also groundbreaking in its scholarship. For centuries, certain items mentioned in the text were a mystery. Aaman and Arundell were able to decipher them, which is a historic achievement unto itself.Due to the nature of The Grand Grimoire, accuracy should be of the utmost importance to any Magician and Sorcerer who wishes to delve into the secrets and powers of this text. You, the reader, can rest assured that this is by far the most accurate rendition of this text to-date.I am confident that this book will be referenced for many years to come. I know I will certainly refer to it time and time again as I further my own research on the subject of Solomonic Magic."

Book excerpt: The religious and magical practices of the ancient Egyptians have had a profound and lasting effect on the world. Egypt has been described as the "mother of magicians." To appreciate the Egyptian view of magic, we need to accept that to the Egyptians magic was not considered strange or eccentric, but was a part of daily life, to which everyone resorted. Magic blended seamlessly with religion and medicine, being seen as part of a holistic worldview. In this volume these magical and religious practices are explored, from both a historical and practical perspective. The practices are explored from an ancient Egyptian worldview, taking into consideration that the Egyptian culture spread over a period of more than 3000 years. The Egyptians saw the universe as being made of four worlds - the everyday world we live in, the underworld, the sky and the heavens. Subject covered in this book include: -What is Heka? -Ancient Egyptian Worldviews -The Gods and Goddesses of Magic -Symbolism - Colours & Sacred Numbers -The Tools Used -Sacred Words & Gestures -Statues & Masks -Crystals & Other Materials used in Heka -Incenses & Perfumes -Food & Wine used in Offerings & at Feasts -The Ancient Egyptian Magical Calendar -Purification, Sacred Space & Rituals David Rankine is based in London (UK) and is a respected authority on spiritual & magical practices. Book excerpt: The Enchiridion of Pope Leo III, also known as the Grimoire of Pope Leo, is a strange document which has appeared in multiple forms over the centuries, taking influence as it has been edited over and over from other occult traditions. In this edition, the document has been edited into modern form, the imagery significantly improved, and some material obviously not original to the Enchiridion itself has been removed as dubious. Here, it is also rendered into fully modern English. Containing predominantly a series of prayers meant to protect the user, it nonetheless also contains, strangely, a method by which the user is able to not merely contact Satan, but physically see the same and secure a pact with the Devil himself. 44 pages.

Book excerpt: Le Livre d'Or (The Book of Gold) is a unique 17th century French magical work comprising numerous amulets, charms, prayers, spells and sigils for working with the Biblical Book of the Psalms of King David. Written in a simple style akin to a medieval Book of Secrets combined with magical practices from the ancient world, Le Livre d'Or brings together practices which have their roots in major works from the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Cairo Genizah, to the Greek Magical Papyri and Sepher Shimmush Tehillim (Magical Use of the Psalms). Now translated into English for the first time, this exceptional text demonstrates the significance of the Psalms as a unifying and vital thread throughout the development of Western magic. From Sweden to Syria, Britain to the Baltic, the use of appropriate Psalms has spread as a significant part of popular folk and religious magic, and Le Livre d'Or is an inimitable example of the transmission of divine power through the written and spoken word. Le Livre d'Or was originally bound as part of Lansdowne MS 1202 with a 17th century French copy of the most important of grimoires, the Key of Solomon. The extensive commentary by David Rankine and Paul Harry Barron emphasises the place of the Psalms within the Grimoire tradition, detailing their extensive apotropaic, amuletic and coercive uses in works such as the Book of Abramelin, the Key of Solomon and the Goetia. The editors also illustrate how the magic of the Psalms has underlain and cross-fertilised numerous traditions over the last two thousand years, from Hellenic magicians, early Christians and Jews of the ancient world to practitioners of the medieval Grimoires and Renaissance Cunning-folk. Whether it was for benevolent or malefic results, Le Livre d'Or provided the appropriate Psalm verses and relevant techniques. This previously ignored work is an outstanding example of eminently practical magic which not only draws on such major works as the Heptameron and the Steganographia, but also many of the divine names found in the Kabbalah. From Saints to spirits, characters to Creeds, Le Livre d'Or shines forth as a significant and reclaimed chapter in the Western Esoteric Traditions. There is also a paperback edition available of this book.
