Book excerpt: Fighting to Be Heard is a love letter to one of the most over-engineered jet aircraft ever built: the British Aerospace 146. This regional aircraft was truly the beginning of the "RJ" (aka Regional Jet), which has become commonplace in air travel today. Although the 146 was ahead of its time, the program, the company, and the aircraft was plagued with many challenges. As a result, the 146 became the last commercial aircraft to be built in the United Kingdom. The title signifies the uphill battle British Aerospace faced in trying to convince airlines to buy and operate the world's quietest jet. Fighting to Be Heard features stories never before printed, photographs from the archives of British Aerospace that have never been published, and interviews with a wide range of people from pilots to customer service reps, salespeople to airline executives. The author spent over four years researching and interviewing a wide range of people involved with the 146, including airlines and operators that flew this unique aircraft. He's summoned records from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) for the tragic murder in the sky of PSA flight 1771, with never before seen images of evidence derived from over 300 pages of reports and interviews.

Book excerpt: The entire four-book series in the best-selling Man of Wax series: Legion, Man of Wax, The Inner Circle, End Game. Nearly 1,600 pages of page-turning suspense! "Man of Wax grabs you by the throat in the first chapter and never lets go. A suspense-filled thrill ride with plenty of shocks along the way. Read it!" —F. Paul Wilson, New York Times bestselling author of the Repairman Jack novels LEGION A message courier pushed into the path of a train. A young woman commits a terrible act of violence. A family man puts a gun to his head. John Smith suspects these aren't random events — someone engineered them. But who — or what? And why is John Smith their next target? MAN OF WAX Ben Anderson goes to bed Sunday night, lying next to his wife in the comfort and safety of their Pennsylvania family home, to wake up the next day in a rundown motel in California — alone. He doesn't know how he got there, he doesn't know where his family is, and written in dried blood on the bathroom door are the words LET THE GAME BEGIN. Soon Ben is contacted by Simon. Simon knows all there is to know about Ben, more than he cares to remember himself. If Ben wants to save himself and his family, he will have to do everything Simon says. As the game begins — with stakes much higher than either man can imagine — no one knows where it will lead or how it will end. Only one thing is for certain: this time the game will change everything. THE INNER CIRCLE Two years ago Ben Anderson woke up in a rundown motel, three thousand miles from home, his family missing, and the words LET THE GAME BEGIN written in blood on the back of the bathroom door. Now, with his past life gone, Ben has become a soldier in Carver Ellison's army against Caesar. But when a mission goes wrong and one of their team members is murdered, it's the last cryptic word spoken that will lead Ben and the team one step closer to the Inner Circle — a step that may bring them salvation ... or get them all killed. END GAME Two years ago Ben Anderson woke up in a rundown motel, three thousand miles from home, his family missing, and the words LET THE GAME BEGIN written in blood on the back of the bathroom door. Two years ago, everything changed. Not just for Ben and his family, who he believed was lost forever, but for those who had orchestrated the whole ordeal and who had stuck Ben in a game he was never supposed to win. Ben vowed he would never play the game again. But now, after learning a startling truth, Ben has no choice but to once again play the game. He wakes up in a rundown motel — a very familiar rundown motel — with the words LET THE GAME CONTINUE on the back of the bathroom door. Caesar and his people are expecting a good show. And Ben’s about to give them one. Because every game must end, and Ben will be the one to end this game ... or die trying.

Book excerpt: A practical guide to addressing the challenges managers face in implementing and enforcing new anti-bribery regulations The Bribery Act became the law of the land in July 2011. It abolished all existing U.K. anti-bribery laws and replaced them with a suite of new regulations decidedly different and more strenuous than what has come before. Under it companies found noncompliant will be open to billions in penalties and remediation costs, and managers will be open to prosecution if anyone associated with their company commits an offence covered by the act. As employees in nearly all departments will share responsibility for ensuring that adequate procedures are in place and enforced, there is a screaming need for practical, jargon-free guidance on the subject. This book fills that need. It arms managers and advisors with the knowledge and tools they need to implement, communicate and test controls and procedures that not only comply with but exceed the new anti-bribery requirements. It also offers priceless pointers on how to effectively react to bribery allegations if and when they occur. Packed with takeaway tips and checklists that put crucial information at readers' fingertips Written by a chartered accountant and compliance expert, the book offers practical steps managers should take to guarantee company compliance Describes best practices in anti-bribery and corruption compliance in all key business areas, including accounting, sales and marketing, management, legal, and internal auditing

Book excerpt: In August 1963, one of the best-selling aircraft of British civil aviation, the BAC One-Eleven, took to the skies for the first time. With an order book for sixty aircraft, more than half were from the United States, which was an unprecedented situation for a British civil aircraft. The first project for the newly formed British Aircraft Corporation, the One-Eleven was wholly designed and built by BAC, and remained in production throughout the entire seventeen-year history of the organisation, performing strongly even when profits were at a low. After flying commercially in Europe for the last time in March 2002, here the One-Eleven is celebrated in style.

Book excerpt: To rule their vast new American territories, the Spanish monarchs appointed viceroys in an attempt to reproduce the monarchical system of government prevailing at the time in Europe. But despite the political significance of the figure of the viceroy, little is known about the mechanisms of viceregal power and its relation to ideas of kingship. Examining this figure, The King's Living Image challenges long-held perspectives on the political nature of Spanish colonialism, recovering, at the same time, the complexity of the political discourses and practices of Spanish rule. It does so by studying the viceregal political culture that developed in New Spain in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and the mechanisms, both formal and informal, of viceregal rule. In so doing, The King's Living Image questions the very existence of a "colonial state" and contends that imperial power was constituted in ritual ceremonies. It also emphasizes the viceroys' significance in carrying out the civilizing mission of the Spanish monarchy with regard to the indigenous population. The King's Living Image will redefine the ways in which scholars have traditionally looked at the viceregal administration in colonial Mexico.
