Book excerpt: *ATHLETES: We spend $40-$60 on video games that will not help us improve in sports, receive scholarships, or make it professionally. Let's focus on our goals and achieve them. Reading over entertainment! Michael Ray Garvin, a former NFL and professional Track & Field Athlete, designed a three books in one manual to help athletes of all sports excel in nutrition, supplements, and training. Michael Ray is an International Sports Sciences Association Certified Sports Nutritionist and an I.S.S.A Certified Trainer. Excerpt from Dr. Darrin Starkey's Foreword:My name is Dr. Darrin Starkey, and I have been a naturopathic physician since 2000, and am a member of the American Alternative Medical Association (AAMA). I have been in the nutritional industry for 27 years, and work for Trace Minerals as their Manager of Training and Education. My area of expertise is in the field of mineral and trace mineral nutrition, with an emphasis on electrolyte and trace mineral balance and deficiency. I am an advocate of adequate hydration, and my trainings focus around building our health around proper hydration, a healthy diet, and the important role trace minerals play in health and nutrition. The Universal Athlete takes Michael's broad knowledge of athletic nutritional needs and weaves in an understanding of not just why the nutrients are important, but includes specific training techniques to advance and improve an athlete's performance levels. Regardless of whether the athlete is in high school, college, or the professional arena, Michael's own athletic experiences in various types of sports makes him the ideal teacher to reach out and educate on the important role of nutrients and nutrition, and the synergistic relationship they have with workout routines. In a world where outward appearances can often make or break you, Michael recognizes and addresses the need to inwardly "dress for success" as an athlete by educating the reader on the benefits of each nutrient and the reasons behind the purpose for taking them as an athlete. This information gives the reader a boost in their training and provides an advantage to those willing to educate themselves. Leaning on his years of personal experience, Michael shares his own formula for success by explaining why and how he uses each nutrient. I know of no pair of shoes, cleats, or spikes that you can lace up to make yourself a professional athlete. What Michael understands and conveys in The Universal Athlete is that nutrition ultimately provides a foundation for athletes and gives them the ability to improve their performance, NOT the equipment, uniforms, or shoes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Revolt of the Black Athlete hit sport and society like an Ali combination. This Fiftieth Anniversary edition of Harry Edwards's classic of activist scholarship arrives even as a new generation engages with the issues he explored. Edwards's new introduction and afterword revisit the revolts by athletes like Muhammad Ali, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Tommie Smith, and John Carlos. At the same time, he engages with the struggles of a present still rife with racism, double-standards, and economic injustice. Again relating the rebellion of black athletes to a larger spirit of revolt among black citizens, Edwards moves his story forward to our era of protests, boycotts, and the dramatic politicization of athletes by Black Lives Matter. Incisive yet ultimately hopeful, The Revolt of the Black Athlete is the still-essential study of the conflicts at the interface of sport, race, and society.

Book excerpt: In virtually every sport in which they are given opportunity to compete, people of African descent dominate. East Africans own every distance running record. Professional sports in the Americas are dominated by men and women of West African descent. Why have blacks come to dominate sports? Are they somehow physically better? And why are we so uncomfortable when we discuss this? Drawing on the latest scientific research, journalist Jon Entine makes an irrefutable case for black athletic superiority. We learn how scientists have used numerous, bogus "scientific" methods to prove that blacks were either more or less superior physically, and how racist scientists have often equated physical prowess with intellectual deficiency. Entine recalls the long, hard road to integration, both on the field and in society. And he shows why it isn't just being black that matters—it makes a huge difference as to where in Africa your ancestors are from.Equal parts sports, science and examination of why this topic is so sensitive, Taboois a book that will spark national debate.

Author & Former NFL player, Michael Ray Garvin, breaks down the Bible into the great game of football. Many times, we as believers get confused because we don't read and study the Bible which is our playbook. God tells us to run a 20-yard post route, but we end up running a 6-yard hitch route because we let the enemy confuse us. Sometimes, the reason is we are operating in a lack of knowledge. We are then 14 yards away from our blessing because we didn't spend time with God and did not read His Word. Don't blame God, we need to blame ourselves. Most people don't realize that they have to be in position to receive the blessing from God. The Lord told the children of Israel to go into the land of Canaan, but they didn't go in because they saw that it was already inhabited. The Lord told them it was theirs to possess, but they refused to listen (Numbers 13:25-33). So they wandered around for forty years in the wilderness because they did not put themselves in position to receive what God had given to them. In football, the quarterback will throw the ball to the designated area of the play call. If the receiver doesn't run to that area- the area he is supposed to be in-then he will not catch the ball. Likewise, we must obey God and get in position to receive. The blessing is there-we only have to be ready to receive it. Imagine an offensive lineman telling the running back in the middle of a game, "I don't feel like blocking today." The running back would look at the offensive lineman like he is crazy. How do you not FEEL like blocking when we are in the middle of a game? We are trying to win! This goes the same for believers in the church. How do you not feel like serving? How do you not feel like praying? How do you not feel like giving, or supporting Christian ministries when Jesus died on the cross for us. He sacrificed so much for us to have fellowship with the Father. It's not about how we feel, it's about being obedient and pleasing God. That offensive lineman's disobedience to not wanting to block could get the running back injured. Our feelings of not wanting to pray for others or preach Jesus could affect someone's walk with Jesus or an unbeliever's salvation. Michael Ray's book will also help the believer find their place and purpose in Spiritual Warfare. This book will also teach you how to tap into the power that is readily available to those who believe in Jesus.
