Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, personality assessment by professional psychologists has taken on an increasingly important role in the field of police work. Most importantly, personality assessment instruments have been utilized in the pre-employment psychological screening of police officer candidates. This psychological screening takes place at the end of the hiring process to ensure that candidates do not have personality characteristics or existing psychopathology that would interfere with their job performance. Personality assessment is also used for other applications in police psychology. These applications include fitness-for-duty evaluations (FFDEs) and second opinion evaluations of officers who challenge hiring decisions. Moreover, police psychologists are involved in a considerable amount of research in order to determine which tests and scales are most appropriate for evaluations. The present volume is divided into four parts to cover the relevant issues in personality assessment for police work. Part I provides an introduction and the basic principles of personality assessment in police psychology. Part II focuses on the major assessment instruments used in police psychology. These include the MMPI-2, the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI), the Inwald Personality Inventory (IPI) and Hilson Tests, the M-PULSE Inventory, pre-offer integrity instruments, and the Rorschach Comprehensive System. Part III examines multiple issues in personality assessment research in the field of police psychology. Part IV covers applications of personality assessment in police psychology. These applications include pre-employment evaluations, fitness for duty evaluations, conditional second opinion psychological evaluations of candidates, using multiple sources of information when conducting mandatory or required evaluations, and the politics of personality assessment in police agencies. This unique and comprehensive text is designed for psychologists who are actively working in the field of law enforcement, including psychologists in both applied and research/academic settings.

Book excerpt: The Handbook of Police Psychology represents the contributions of over thirty police psychologists, all experts in their field, on the core subject matters of police psychology. Police psychology is broadly defined as the application of psychological principles and methods to law enforcement. This growing area includes topics such as screening and hiring of police officers; conducting screening for special squads (e.g., SWAT); fitness-for-duty evaluations; investigations, hostage negotiations; training and consultation, and stress counseling, among others. The book examines the beginnings of police psychology and early influences on the profession such as experimental investigations of psychological testing on police attitude and performance. Influential figures in the field of police psychology are discussed, including the nation’s first full-time police psychologist who served on the Los Angeles Police Department, and the first full-time police officer to earn a doctorate in psychology while still in uniform with the New York Police Department.

The first meeting, the first conversation, the shared dreams, and passions amongst others all pointed to the fact that they had found their perfect match. Even the chemistry between them was apparent to their friends. And they both exchanged vows of undying love, on numerous occasions. They could have sworn that they had beaten the odds of unhappy relationships. Nothing could go wrong, they thought. But things took a different turn, almost suddenly. The slight issues gained prominence and seemingly displaced the butterflies in their belly. And their certainties too! Then the questions flooded in. What went wrong? Is it that what I felt all along wasn't real? Was it love or lust? And they ultimately had to decide what to do with the relationship. More often than not, people emerge from such experiences with scars so big they vow never to venture into relationships again. Over and over again, that story has been told. We've read it in books. We've seen it in movies. Some of us have even lived it. Of course, the characters and the specifics always differ. Still they point to the same problem - a gross misunderstanding of how relationships work. As if those were not bad enough, stories of marriages ending in divorce abound. And they only add to our disillusionment about relationships as a whole. Don't fall for the lamentable adventure... Get your relationship right by getting relationship compatibility right. Set your future on the path of blissfulness and get past the monstrous menace of heartbreaks. Do you need the seventh heaven experience in your relationship? Then, get this awesome book!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in science and technology necessitate the use of increasingly-complicated dynamic control processes. Undoubtedly, sophisticated mathematical models are also concurrently elaborated for these processes. In particular, linear dynamic control systems iJ = Ay + Bu, y E M C ]Rn, U E ]RT, (1) where A and B are constants, are often abandoned in favor of nonlinear dynamic control systems (2) which, in addition, contain a large number of equations. The solution of problems for multidimensional nonlinear control systems en counters serious difficulties, which are both mathematical and technical in nature. Therefore it is imperative to develop methods of reduction of nonlinear systems to a simpler form, for example, decomposition into systems of lesser dimension. Approaches to reduction are diverse, in particular, techniques based on approxi mation methods. In this monograph, we elaborate the most natural and obvious (in our opinion) approach, which is essentially inherent in any theory of math ematical entities, for instance, in the theory of linear spaces, theory of groups, etc. Reduction in our interpretation is based on assigning to the initial object an isomorphic object, a quotient object, and a subobject. In the theory of linear spaces, for instance, reduction consists in reducing to an isomorphic linear space, quotient space, and subspace. Strictly speaking, the exposition of any mathemat ical theory essentially begins with the introduction of these reduced objects and determination of their basic properties in relation to the initial object.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no one best way for an undergraduate student to learn elementary algebra. Some kinds of presentations will please some learners and will disenchant others. This text presents elementary algebra organized accord ing to some principles of universal algebra. Many students find such a presentation of algebra appealing and easier to comprehend. The approach emphasizes the similarities and common concepts of the many algebraic structures. Such an approach to learning algebra must necessarily have its formal aspects, but we have tried in this presentation not to make abstraction a goal in itself. We have made great efforts to render the algebraic concepts intuitive and understandable. We have not hesitated to deviate from the form of the text when we feel it advisable for the learner. Often the presenta tions are concrete and may be regarded by some as out of fashion. How to present a particular topic is a subjective one dictated by the author's estima tion of what the student can best handle at this level. We do strive for consistent unifying terminology and notation. This means abandoning terms peculiar to one branch of algebra when there is available a more general term applicable to all of algebra. We hope that this text is readable by the student as well as the instructor. It is a goal of ours to free the instructor for more creative endeavors than reading the text to the students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unified Signal Theory is an indispensible textbook dealing with the theory of deterministic signals; a topic of fundamental interest to graduates and senior undergraduates in the areas of information engineering (telecommunications, control, systems theory and electronics), astronomy, oceanography, earth science, biology and medicine. The unified theory follows an innovative approach – that of combining all signal classes into just one. The fundamental signal operations (convolution, Fourier transform, linear systems, sampling and interpolation) are established simultaneously for all the signal classes. This unified approach avoids the repetition of similar concepts consequent on other approaches’ separate treatment of definitions and properties for each signal class. Modern wavelet ideas are developed in harmony with the rest of the text. Unified Signal Theory provides: • exercises and examples, to give the student practice; • solutions which are available for download and save the tutor time; and • a choice of two suggested reading paths depending on the level of the student, for an enhanced learning experience. The advantages of the unified approach are many: it permits a global vision of the topic, it is economical in teaching and learning, and it can be adjusted easily to fit new applications. This textbook presents the theory in five chapters, and goes on to demonstrate specific applications such as fast Fourier transform implementation, sampling and reconstructions of signals, and multicolor modulation systems, in a further six chapters. Mathematical concepts are introduced conceptually within the body of the book with more rigorous treatment being reserved for the appendices.

Rodeo cowboy Channing Richardson has absolutely no intention of marrying his mother’s best friend’s daughter despite their maternal machinations! Yes, he’s the only unmarried son she has left, but he has no interest in marrying anyone, let alone scholarly city girl Madeleine Decker. It’s the only thing he and Madeleine agree on. No matter that he’s drop-dead handsome—and smarter than she wants to give him credit for —Madeleine still prefers spinsterhood to marrying infuriating Wyoming bull rider Chan. But mothers who have a PhD in genetics and years of anthropological fieldwork are disinclined to take ‘no’ for an answer. There’s only one way to convince them: Chan and Madeleine will go down the road from rodeo to rodeo together that summer. Sure, it’s drastic, but proof is the one thing their mothers understand. Spending two months butting heads, dealing with pulled muscles, ornery bulls, and so many miles of road in an RV the size of a walnut, is maybe not the greatest idea they’ve ever had. The best they can hope for is to escape unscathed. Unless, of course, their mothers are right.
