Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fully revised and updated fourth edition of the classic Common Sense Economics. As the global economy recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic and debates over the future of work challenge our long-held preconceptions about what careers and the market can be, learning the basics of economics has never been more essential. Principles such as gains from trade, the role of profit and loss, and the secondary effects of government spending, taxes, and borrowing risk continue to be critically important to the way America's economy functions, and critically important to understand for those hoping to further their professional lives—even their personal lives. Common Sense Economics discusses these key points and theories and more, using them to show how any reader can make wiser personal choices and form more informed positions on policy. Now in its fourth edition, this classic from James D. Gwartney, Dwight R. Lee, Tawni Hunt Ferrarini , Joseph P. Calhoun, and Jane Shaw Stroup has been fully updated to include commentary on the effects of the pandemic on the global economy and the workplace; it offers insight into political processes and the many ways in which economics informs policy, illuminating our world and what might be done to make it better.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Common Sense of Economic Science A few words may, by way of preface, be said on the aim of this book and on its method. The aim is to set out the leading truths and principles of Economics in a form that makes them easy to grasp; the method is, by way of proof or illustration, to appeal, as far as necessary, alike to science and to history. It has, in not a few treatises on Economics, been the practice to lay down abstract propositions and definitions and then to go on, if not to prove, at least to argue in support of them. The practice renders the study difficult. Definitions there must be, but terms should first be explained and understood. Unfortunately, again, arguments relied upon have been too often merely quantitative. The element of quality which alike in the production, exchange and distribution of Wealth influences the dealings and ideas of men at least as much as quantity, has too frequently been overlooked. In some aspects of Economics it is very important, and merely quantitative arguments are, at best, no more than half-truths. It is for these reasons mainly that Economics has earned the name of the "dismal science." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It's refreshing when four of the best in the profession avoid the all-too-common practice of writing in a code that only other economists can comprehend." ---Robert McTeer, former president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas With the global economy recovering from a steep recession, those who fail to grasp basic economic principles such as gains from trade, the role of profit and loss, and the secondary effects of government spending, taxes, and borrowing risk falling behind in their professional careers--even their personal lives. Common Sense Economics discusses key principles and uses them to show how to make wise personal and policy choices. This new edition of a classic from James D. Gwartney, Richard L. Stroup, Dwight R. Lee, and Tawni H. Ferrarini, with reflections on the recent recession and the policy response to it, illuminates our world and what might be done to make it better.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Common Sense Economics, what does that mean? According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary common sense is sound and prudent judgment based on a simple perception of the situation or facts. This book explains most of the commonly used economic principles and presents many facts, current and past, so that the reader can make up their own mind. For example, if two identical products are for sale at the same location but the price of one product is lower than the other common sense would dictate that you choose the product with the lower price. That's just common sense and it can be used to solve many economic problems. The book explains economic theory past and present in numbers, no silly graphs that confuse more than they help. For example, the question of who is responsible for the current inflation is analyzed with actual government numbers showing the reduction of supply of barrels of oil and the corresponding spot prices. Also detailed are the government deficits for fiscal years 2021 and 2022. The answer is simple, too much money deficits, chasing too few goods, production of oil in barrels per thousand that did not keep up with demand. According to the numbers the policies of Biden administration were the major contributors to the current level of inflation. It's not rocket science it's just common sense.
