Book excerpt: In The Color of Pain, author E.G. Rose delivers a haunting horror novel that explores the dark side of human nature. Raymond is an orphan with a talent for art who suffers from chronic stomach pain. He has been ruthlessly bullied about his strangeness and “special” abilities that sometimes frighten the other children at The Haven for Little Wanderers Orphanage. When his new case worker, Ada, shows him affection and helps explain how he can see through people’s emotions and secrets, Raymond is thrilled. However, as he delves deeper into his strange abilities, he discovers the horrifying truth about himself – he must feed on the pain of others to survive. Ada becomes increasingly controlling and possessive, pushing Raymond to feed off his only friend, leading him down a dark path that culminates in a tragic ending. With chilling prose and a gripping storyline, The Color of Pain is a must-read for horror fans who crave stories that delve deep into the human psyche.

Book excerpt: As a small boy, Alex becomes ensnared in the schemes of his mother, Cathlean, as she seeks to entrap a white British soldier, John, and “marry up” to improve her status in life. Her plan comes to fruition when John becomes obsessed with his black wife, marries her, then takes her and her son away from her native country of Belize to live in England. Cathlean becomes the society woman in England but begs her husband to return to Belize so she can show off her new status to her friends and fellow “good-time” girls. They return ten years later, but an unhappy Alex seeks solace in the arms of Sherrette. They fall head over heels but soon find their own problems as fast-paced revelations affect their fragile relationship. Told in a first-person view of life in Dangriga, Belize, young Alex’s story reflects on the color of his pain as he seems to bear the brunt of Cathlean’s selfish brand of pain that she calls love.

Book excerpt: Why is pain so poorly understood? Why do we still distinguish between mental pain and physical pain, when pain is always an emotional experience? How can it be that science is about to clone a human being but still can't cure the pain of a bad back? If pain is the reason why most people visit the doctor, why are most doctors so bad at addressing the problem of suffering? Marni Jackson's PAIN: THE FIFTH VITAL SIGN is a witty, personal and groundbreaking inquiry into the nature, treatment and definition of human pain, one of the most misunderstood and elusive subjects to challenge humankind. In the questing and narrative manner of Oliver Sacks, Jackson takes us back into the history of pain and forward into the possibilities of pain genetics, Jackson brings us stories both of people in pain and the pain pioneers: eccentrics and artists, wrestlers and writers, psychologists and philosophers, nurses and doctors. Above all, Pain makes an elusive subject vivid and readable. We all know what pain is. Now Marni Jackson has given it a voice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One in every six boys is sexually abused. That's just the ones who eventually tell their secret. The Color of Pain speaks to the professionals, pastors, and loved ones as well as to the boys and men who were abused. And who better to write a book like this than one of the victims who has lived the pain and later experienced the healing through Christ. The Color of Pain is a combination of some of the facts that most don't think about and some of the pain that most won't talk about. Whether you are one of the abused or someone who knows someone abused, this book is a moving and necessary read. "I belong to a company of men and boys, mostly silent and scared. So few have survived well enough to talk about it. I know I have to talk, because I DID survive, and because I see them in every group I meet, from five to seventy-years-old suffering, silent victims who are not really considered REAL victims by many, since the male species, in their minds, should be able to fend off any abuse. No matter how little they were. No one really defends boy and men victims. So we've stayed silent. Wouldn't you?" Gregory Reid, The Color of Pain

Book excerpt: This nonfictional 360-plus-page book with full color cover dust jacket describes my experiences with pain and will be in the Health and Self-help categories of books. The book is written for a general audience, especially for those dealing with acute or chronic musculoskeletal pain. It is for persons, their family and friends, who are looking for better ways to deal with pain, when what they are trying is not working. There are 19 original grayscale illustrations. I relate personal experiences with pain, beginning at the age of 5, when I was hospitalized for over 3 months with a severe autoimmune illness. My injuries since then have taught me more about pain, especially after medical school. During my practice of orthopedic surgery, trauma surgery and spine surgery, I enjoyed learning from my patients. In the 1980s, three spine patients, all with severe pain, sparked my intense learning experience while dealing with their challenging conditions, including cancer of the spine. I give true stories and teach principles that have worked for the benefit of many. Experimenting with the principles has helped my own health challenges. Understanding the healing capacity of the human body gives hope and perspective. How average patients get into trouble trying to copy elite athletes in the news is reviewed to give perspective for the rest of us. I describe physical, emotional and spiritual tools that can alleviate all levels of pain, whether it is from automobile accidents or from an ankle sprain. One of the simplest tools is when to use ice or heat, but there are many other good tools. How to recognize them and ways to keep from misusing them are given. Pain that is not improving, as expected, is all too common and frustrating for patients and doctors. Dependencies and addictions of many kinds are addressed. What I learned about pain as a patient and as an orthopedic surgeon includes timeless principles and ideas that will help with the ongoing opioid abuse epidemic. By understanding true stories and with the application of principles, many painful musculoskeletal problems can be resolved.

Patrick Wall shows that pain is a matter of behavioral manifestation and differs among individuals, situations, and cultures. Wall provides a wealth of fascinating and sometimes disturbing historical detail, such as famous characters who derived pleasure from pain, the unexpected reactions of injured people, the role of endorphins, and the power of placebo. He covers cures of pain, ranging from drugs and surgery, through relaxation techniques and exercise, to acupuncture, electrical nerve stimulation, and herbalism.

Colors of Pain is merely the tip of the iceberg of pain that we as living, breathing, emotional wrecks go through from time to time. I believe this book is the voice for those without a voice. I implore you to read and understand that you are not alone in your journey to find happiness and meaning to your life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In How Does It Hurt?, acclaimed poet and biographer Stephanie de Montalk tells the story of the chronic pain that has invaded her life for more than 10 years. She considers how her early experiences have been cast into fresh relief by what she has endured, then goes back in time to investigate the lives and works of three writers who also lived with and wrote about pain: "the consolator," English social theorist Harriet Martineau (1802–1876), "the vendor of happiness," French novelist Alphonse Daudet (1840–1897), and "the imago," Polish poet Aleksander Wat (1900–1967). Through these explorations de Montalk confronts the paradox of writing about suffering: where we can turn when the pain is beyond words? A unique blend of memoir, imaginative biography, and poetry, How Does It Hurt? is a groundbreaking contribution to the understanding of chronic pain and a spellbinding literary achievement.

The Color of pain identifies a particular symptom which exposes the breakdown of trust from within the black family construct; bleeding out into an entire culture. This book zeroes in on childhood sexual assault within the home. And gives sound to once silenced voices: healing the inner child of todays wounded adults. Warning: this book can be triggering and graphic for those whom have experienced such trauma however, this book also provides tools and information around the subject for the purpose of healing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phenomenon of pain presents problems and puzzles for philosophers who want to understand its nature. Though pain might seem simple, there has been disagreement since Aristotle about whether pain is an emotion, sensation, perception, or disturbed state of the body. Despite advances in psychology, neuroscience, and medicine, pain is still poorly understood and multiple theories of pain abound. The Routledge Handbook of Philosophy of Pain is an outstanding reference source to the key topics, problems, and debates in this exciting and interdisciplinary subject and is the first collection of its kind. Comprising over thirty chapters by a team of international contributors the Handbook is divided into nine clear parts: Modeling pain in philosophy Modeling pain in neuroscience Modeling pain in psychology Pain in philosophy of mind Pain in epistemology Pain in philosophy of religion Pain in ethics Pain in medicine Pain in law As well as fundamental topics in the philosophy of pain such as the nature, role, and value of pain, many other important topics are covered including the neurological pathways involved in pain processing; biopsychosocial and cognitive-behavioural models of pain; chronic pain; pain and non-human animals; pain and knowledge; controlled substances for pain; pain and placebo effects; and pain and physician-assisted suicide. The Routledge Handbook of Philosophy of Pain is essential reading for students and researchers in philosophy of mind, philosophy of psychology and ethics. It will also be very useful to researchers of pain from any field, especially those in psychology, medicine, and health studies.
