This book aims to provide direction toward the development and maintenance of a transfer receptive culture, which is defined as an institutional commitment by a university to support transfer students of color. A transfer receptive culture explicitly acknowledges the roles of race and racism in the vertical transfer process from a community college to a university and unapologetically centers transfer as a form of equity in the higher education pipeline. Transfer serves families by providing an affordable avenue to higher education while minimizing the impact of crippling loan debt. It serves the public at large by leveraging scarce state resources over the long-term. And it provides a path to higher education for students who might not otherwise have access to it. However, none of these outcomes will be realized unless we improve the transfer process. Although community colleges can and do provide a more affordable avenue to the baccalaureate, the transfer process has remained convoluted, complicated, and complex. Our most vulnerable students begin their postsecondary education at a community college, yet these students are often the least equipped to navigate the frequently choppy waters of transfer in the middle of their undergraduate career. The three broad categories of this book address some of the most pressing issues by focusing on key aspects of the transfer process: strategic planning, curricular innovations and initiatives, and outreach and advising. Many of the articles recognize that transfer is a shifting landscape, and the most imaginative promising practices now emphasize deep collaboration, and shared implementation over the long-term. All of the practices shared evoke a general movement away from transactional gestures towards the building of genuine relational connections with transfer students. This book highlights the experience of practitioners involved in the day-to-day work of serving students in a variety of institutional contexts: public and private, two-year and four-year. The authors hail from institutions around the country, as well as foundations and organizations that are devoted to the important work of improving American higher education. Book excerpt: Transferring from two-year colleges to four-year institutions provides a critical pathway to upward mobility for many underrepresented students such as immigrant students who disproportionately enroll in community colleges (AACC, 2015; Cohen et al., 2014; Levin & Kater, 2012). Since the immigrant population continues to grow in the United States (Pew Research Center, 2015), understanding the challenges facing immigrant students who transfer from community colleges to four-year institutions can provide a foundation for exploring what can be done to better serve this population in American higher education. This study is framed by the following research questions: What challenges do immigrant transfer students face at public four-year institutions? How do they overcome these challenges through personal initiatives and institutional practices? The grounded theory method used in this study was aimed at extending the literature on challenges facing immigrant transfer students at public four-year institutions and strategies for cultivating the success of immigrant transfer students in American higher education. This qualitative study is based on a series of semi-structured interviews with 30 immigrant transfer students at two public four-year institutions in the Midwest, document analysis, and research notes and memos. This study found that immigrant transfer students have diverse backgrounds which influence their educational and non-educational experiences at public four-year institutions. There were five primary challenges immigrant transfer students face at public four-year universities: (a) a lack of individualized guidance, (b) a lack of understanding of the four-year college experiences, (c) a lack of time and money, (d) a lack of social and academic involvement, and (e) a limited number of transfer credits. This study also found that immigrant transfer students use a wide range of personal initiatives and institutional practices to overcome the challenges they face at public four-year universities. In broad strokes, this study presents a theory for immigrant transfer students at public four-year institutions to persist in American higher education. These findings can help scholars and practitioners enhance understandings of immigrant transfer students' challenges and improve programs and practices to better serve immigrant transfer students to be engaged in college, be more satisfied, and achieve academic success.
