Understanding the debate over biblical feminism is essential to answering the questions about the role of women in the church. In this book, Dr. Cottrell "stands squarely in the path of the evangelical feminists who want to prove that the Bible agrees with their egalitarian views" (Clark H. Pinock, Ph.D., McMaster Divinity College). Lightning Print On Demand Title.

Book excerpt: "What is truth?" Pilate's question to Jesus holds a special relevance today. In an age of communication and scientific discovery this is still a time when "truth" is more a matter of opinion than fact. In this revised edition of His Truth, Dr. Jack Cottrell investigates truth and reality as revealed in the Bible. His Truth deals with controversial subjects like grace, assurance, God's call, predestination and other doctrines that many people view as hard to understand.

Book excerpt: "Scripture is far from silent on the subject of baptism, yet history is strewn with such a variety of perspectives that it becomes difficult to gain a clear view of what the Bible itself actually has to say: How would the original readers of Acts, Romans, or Colossians have understood the texts concerning baptism when they read them for the very first time? How do readers of today understand the baptismal references of the New Testament if they have no particular commitment to a certain theological point of view? In thirteen chapters, Dr. Cottrell discusses the twelve major texts in the New Testament and does so by examining the meaning of the original words, the historical background, and the comparative references. The texts covered: Matthew 28:18-20, Mark 16:15-16, John 3:3-5, Acts 2:38-39, Acts 22:16, Romans 6:3-4, 1 Corinthians 12:13, Galatians 3:26-27, Ephesians 5:25-27, Colossians 2:11-13, Titus 3:5, 1 Peter 3:21"--P. Book excerpt: The first volume in a series entitled "The Collected Works of Jack Cottrell" - this book is a collection of essays derived from his 48+ years of teaching. As Dr. Cottrell explains: "I am calling this first volume The Unity of Truth. A main theme of my whole career has been TRUTH; thus it seems appropriate to begin with this subject. The lead essay has the same title as the book, namely, "The Unity of Truth." This is a brand new study, never before published. In length, it is sort of in between an essay and a book, so I will call it a "theologella" for three reasons. First, it is about theology. Second, short novels are called novellas; the length of this piece fits that pattern. Third, I like to make up new words. The next three studies herein are of different lengths. Two have been published before, both in The Restoration Herald. One is called "In Matters of Faith, Unity; in Matters of Opinion, Liberty." This goes back to the February/March 2009 issues of the Herald. The other is a slightly longer version of a piece called "Christian Truth for a World in Decay," which appeared twice in the Herald: in the December 2016 issue, and in the June/July 2017 issues. The next piece here is entitled "'Hold On!' The Tyranny of Change." This is a sermon first preached at the Greendale (IN) First Church of Christ (where I worship and work), then for a chapel service at the (then) Florida Christian College. This is its first time in print. The next item is "The Peter Pan Syndrome: Churches and Christians That Won't Grow Up." This is one of my favorite compositions. I have presented it numerous times, beginning at a meeting in Louisville, KY, in 2014. It is based solely on Paul's teaching in Ephesians 4:11-16. Next is my most recent composition (as of May 14, 2018). I was asked to speak on this subject for the April 2018 meeting of the Fi-County Ministerial Association in Mowrystown, OH, namely, "Is the Restoration Movement Still Relevant?" My answer is yes, but only if we decide to put faithfulness to God's truth ahead of our quest for the unity of Christendom. This applies especially to the truth about baptism. The final entry here is a paper I presented in Indianapolis, IN, in the fall of 1989, at a conference on the nature of Biblical authority sponsored by the Christian Theological Seminary (Disciples of Christ). Three main speakers were invited to present papers on the conservative, moderate, and liberal perspectives on this subject. I was asked to present a paper from the conservative viewpoint. I am in the process of planning the next volume, which will probably be called God's Word Is Truth. It will be a selection of pieces on Biblical themes. Meanwhile, I hope you enjoy this one." Book excerpt: What do you believe? Have you ever tried to answer that question? If you were asked would you need to look in the Bible, a pastor, or a friend? How does scientific discovery fit with your faith? How do you picture God? How do you interact with God? Is God good? These and other questions are critical for our society to be prepared to answer. Our values are under attack on all fronts. We cannot be well prepared to stand for anything without considering what we value and what we stand for.The story of the world begins in the Scriptures captured in the Old Testament. Jesus life was a New Testament of God's love and commitment to us. Now its time for another testament, your testament. Join me in a journey that will strengthen your faith in God, and reaffirm your values.Through this exploration of faith I have found a renewed relationship with God, renewed my interest in church, and renewed my interest in leading by example on our society that often needs just that.

Book excerpt: With a crisp insouciance and gliding charm, Jack Cottrell's fiery, fey, finely-tuned fictions leap from sci-fi to fantasy, comedy to horror, literary realism to romance, and to hybrids of all of these. Featuring sport, friendship, love, health, family, climate change, artificial intelligence, desire, magic, Greek gods, ghosts, peanut butter, cyber pranks, racial prejudice, and creepy medical advances, his stories play with the allure of the past, the disturbances of our own times, and the dangerous idealism of our future technologies - each one in fewer than 300 words. Jack is a writer and volunteer rugby referee who knows how to pack a lot into a small space, whether a story or an extremely organised sports bag. With 'Ten Acceptable Acts of Arson', has he worked out how to cram an entire universe into a pocket-sized capsule?

The purpose of this third volume is to examine the concepts of headship and submission as the main biblical descriptions of the respective roles of men and women...attempting to show...that the traditional understanding of headship and submission is the only one that is supported by unbiased word studies and sound hermeneutics" -- Introduction.

Book excerpt: The second volume in the collection entitled "The Collected Writings of Jack Cottrell." As Dr. Cottrell explains, "these items for the most part develop themes related to the Bible, with a continuing emphasis on sound doctrine. (Sound doctrine, or TRUTH, was the theme of the first volume, The Unity of Truth.) I have divided these items into two categories. In Part One, all of the essays are dealing with the same subject, namely, the inerrancy of the Bible. For almost two decades this was one of the most controversial Biblical topics under discussion in our Movement and elsewhere. In the Evangelical world this issue became prominent in the early 1960s, and in the Restoration Movement about ten years later. It continued to be debated into the 1980s. Part Two of this volume is a selection of five unrelated addresses on Biblical topics, most of which have appeared within the last decade or so. For most of them (maybe all of them), this is the first time they have been in print. I consider the longest of these, "The Newness of the New Testament," to be one of the most important studies I have ever produced. If you read nothing else in this volume, please read this!" (Adapted from the Introduction)
